Title: I need help finding a glove
Post by: Marvin M. on September 28, 2012, 09:09:00 PM
About ten years ago I picked up a leather glove at that big box retailer we all know when they closed out their archery stuff. They don't carry them any more and it became my favorite glove. After many, many shots, it has a hole in it.

It's made by Allen and they don't make that model any more. It's very thin leather and allows me to really feel the string.

Does anyone have any idea where I can find one or an appropriate substitute?

My favorite is a damascus. Good string feel. All others seemed to thick to me.

Started shooting with a Bearpaw about two months ago, and it has become my favorite glove.  The leather is nice and supple, made very well- in Germany I believe.

x2. Next closest for me is the "Berlin" or Kustom King deerskin glove - a little thicker than the Damascus, but still has good string feel.

A good glove is the one personal archery item that isn't going to be right for anyone but you.  There are some gloves of amazing quality out there that just don't work for me, but I wish they did. All these factors come into play:
*Whether you shoot split or 3-under,
*Whether you like to "feel" the string
    *How deep you hook
*Proximity of your fingers to each that feels natural and that it allows
*Construction of the finger stalls, i.e are there bulky seams that interfere with your anchor, etc.
*Sensitivity of your fingertips after a lot of shooting

I feel your pain.  WallyWorld used to offer a "plainjane" glove by Fieldline and close them out at $5 after hunting season.  Wish I'd bought them out!  Closest I've been able to come since is the Classic at Kustom King.

Yes Field was a great glove, I found The glove that Big Jim sells is very close. I believe it is a Bearpaw like Phrogdrvr said.

X2 on the Damascus. Used a number of different gloves and tabs and always came back to the Damascus. Thin with great feel of the string.

I ordered a Damascus from Three Rivers but it must not be the same one you guys are talking about. It has thick pads on the fingers and I can't feel the string at all with it.

My accuracy is down when I shoot it.

Hap,

If you can find one of them, I'd be glad to pay or trade for something you need.

I was very careful to keep this one oiled and take care of it but even with good care things wear out.

Sorry guys. I went back and looked. It's the Cordovan, not Damascus that I have. Thick pads on the fingers. No sense, at least for me of where the string is on my fingers.

This week I was brousing in Cabela's cave and found a Martin damascus much discounted. I had never tried one before but thought for the price -why not.

It feels better to me than my old glove, or my tab for that matter. I am shooting mid 50# range bows, if that matters. I liked it almost immediately.

I once ordered a glove from a custom maker with plastic inserts and never could get comfortable with it. So I agree with oldogrib, just personal preference- what works for me may not work for you.
I can say I was surprised that I liked this glove that much.

You need to go and try them on ,if you have a place to go. When you find one that you like buy a few of them. I had a Alasken and loved the glove. They are now made over seas and the materials were changed. I hate it now. Tried the Bearpaw at Denton and love it so I bought 3 so I have them. They are even getting hard to find. You have to find the glove that is for you.
Good Luck

I've been thru a fex damascus gloves and always liked the feel of them but never liked how they always come loose on your fingers. I bought a Black Widow stick tite and love it! It's about the same thickness as a damascus but the finger stalls stay tight on your fingers when shooting. The stalls are plenty long for a deep hook. I've got short fingers so I had to modify mine a bit by trimming a bit out of the bottom of the stalls,on the palm side to be able to bend my fingers comfortably.I bought the Super glove but ended up removing the added overlays because I couldn't feel the string like I like to.Might give one a try, it's my go to glove from now on!

I also like a thin glove. I wanted a glove to keep my hands warm while in the tree stand. I went to Sam's and got 2 pair of their Cabretta work gloves. They fit tight and are perfect thickness for me. I used some leather dye to make them camoflage and have an extra pair for chores. They work great.
