Title: Sprained wrist might cancel my Mt. Goat tag! Updated
Post by: twitchstick on September 26, 2012, 08:22:00 PM
Monday I picked up a light frying pan at work and heard a pop in my wrist. I didn't pay much attention to it at frist until I got home from work and my wife notice how swollen it was. I went into the doctor yesteryday and he thinks it might be cutting it close on it healing in time for the opener next monday. It's put me in bad postion on wether or not to try to keep the tag or turn it in. If I turn in back in they may give me a variance and they may let me have the same tag next year or a refund and keep my bounus pionts but no gaurantee. This also means no shooting until the hunt. I would hate to ruin a once in a lifetime tag if I can't pulled back on a goat if the wrist fails or even worst to wound one. It's been a long tough year with lots of hours spent at work for me. This hunt has been the light at the end of the tunnel for me. 14 days of pure bliss in the mountians chasing goats. I have hardly had any time to go hunting the last few years and was really looking foward to it. It's put me in a dark place for sure. I will keep it iced and try my best to still do it but it is not looking good.

Weigh out the possibilities.  See what DNR will do, as ifvthey will give you the tag next year- good
Increasing injury?
Get up, close the gap and unable to draw an anchor?
Bummer options and deep decisions.  Luck to you.  I know how a shoulder injury tossed me in the street and how bummed I was

Try shooting your bow and see how it goes. Im sure you can brace it some way or another to keep you hunt.  Short of a broken leg Id be going.

I would go hire a profesional sports trainer rehab specialist if you could afford it. Get some pro help because that is a once in a lifetime hunt for most working stiffs. Good Luck.

Soak in a bucket of icewater... cold enuff to the point it burns... take it out and work it out a bit... rinse and repeat. If it's a light sprain this will work... I've completed a few BJJ tournaments with sprained ankles and toes using this method.

If it were me that's what I'd do... but you are not me and I am more guts than brains so use your judgement... pain thresholds are different and like I said... I am a certifiable moron.

Best of luck to you and godspeed on a quick and full recovery.

Ice for sure- all day 20 min on and 20 off.  Lots of Ibuprofen. 800 every 4 hours.  Get sports-med pro advice. Get a wrist support for the hunt.  If all else fails- cortisone shots to keep you up for the trip.  You only need to make one shot!  Good luck.  Just my ideas.

If you've ever used a Chiropractor and have a good one, that is an avenue worth checking out.

I lived with what I thought was a rotator cuff problem for a long time, and mentioned it in passing one day at the Chiro.  She looked it over well, moved it slightly, and POP, 18 months of pain disappeared.  Turns out it had been dislocated all that time.

May not be the answer for you, but it could also possibly save the hunt of a lifetime...

I'm with Hawkeye.  worth a try... get to you DC ASAP.
also
I've got a sensitive wrist that I have to tape from time to time and that supports it enough that I can comfortably shoot.

Panzer and I think alot alike here.  I just hurt my wrist last week.  I team rope and break colts. Got bucked off a colt and landed on my wrist.  It only hurts for the first few shots.  Then a bit afterwards.  Advil, ice, and grit...Probably not the best longterm solution, but the one I seem to choose most.
Lord Willing, your wrist will heal up before your hunt.
God Bless,
Nathan

I am a chiropractor and will give you some friendly advice.  Stop using ice and use heat.  You only want to use ice for about the first 24-36 hours after an injury.  This is to control and limit the swelling.  After that you want heat.  The heat will increase blood flow to the area and help flush out the inflammation.  Go to your chiro and get some therapy like ultrasound or stim on the area.  If possible and I think this will help the most get some massage therapy on the wrist.  You could probably get away with just a 15 min massage to the affected area.  Also, you need to rest it as much as possible.  Finally, if you want to try some natural anti-inflammatories try a product called X-Flame from Nutritional Frontiers.  You can check them out on the web and I think order directly.  If you'd like to try the X-Flame, but can't get it from the website, pm me and I'll help you out.  As always, this is just some guidance, see a local healthcare professional if you need further help.  Good luck, praying for a speedy recovery.

Oh man, try to make it work. BE POSITIVE. Don't let that voice in your head be doubtful. Sounds like a dream hunt for sure.
Sounds like some good advice from the Doc above.
Good Luck!
