Title: Paint Marker/Bow Specs???
Post by: roundbal on September 26, 2012, 12:39:00 PM
One of my bows has the specs written on the limb with what looks to be a white paint marker and the markings are coming off. I want to write the the specs back on the bow before they rub off completely just in case I would happen to forget. What kind of marker would you fellows recomend?

It must have been written on after the bow was finished, otherwise it wouldn't be coming off.

I prefer India ink for bow markings, although I have used numerous colored Sharpie pens if black won't work. I've found just about any type pen or marker is compatable with the finish I use.
If there isn't a finsh over the markings, I'd think anything would eventually wear off.

Yea I thought it was odd that the specs aren't under the glass so they were stay their permanently.

The specs normally aren't under the glass.
Most folks write on top of the glass, then apply the finish, which protects the bow as well as the markings.

I'd redo the specs, then spray a rattle can finish over the markings. It should only be a small area anyway. If the finish that you spray on doesn't totally match the finish on the rest of the bow, or glossier, buff it out with 0000 steel wool to blend it in, polish it good with a soft cotton rag....try it.....I'm thinking you won't even be able to tell that you've worked on it.

As far as what marker to use - you could try a Sharpie, dip pen with your choice of colored ink, or a gel pen in your color choice.
Whatever you use give it a test first with the clear finish you'll put over it just to be sure everything plays well together.

For you "New School" guys there is an app for a smartphone called ArcheryMemo. I keep all the specs on all my bows in it. I know I can hear my Dad saying "Well what if you lose your phone".

If that happens my bow specs won't be my biggest worry.

I have an excel spreadsheet on my computer for the same thing. Really handy when I want to play some "what if" games with Stu's calculator without having to walk down stairs to check the bow. Or if I buy a new string - saves me from scratching my head and asking "what was that brace height again". That, by the way would be a really useful piece of info for bowyers in include in their bow markings.
