We recieved a new phone book today in the mail, so I was trying to figure out what to do with the old one.
There has been alot of penetration tests on Tradgang, and I enjoyed them, and they got my curiosity up. I realize this is not a "realastic" test, but for my own satisfaction, I wanted to give it a try, and thought I would share the results...
My specs are ...
BOW: 64" 61# Black Widow PLX
ARROW: CX 350 cut to 31" BOP, 100 brass insert
Broadhead: 190 Grizzly El Grande/100 steel adapter..TOTAL ARROW WEIGHT 781 GRAINS
SHOT: 20 yards (60 ft)
The results....

It's a hair over an inch and a half thick
WELL YA WONT HAVE ANY PROB AT PUTTING IT THROUGH A DEER :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
just hope the deer don't start wearing telephone books
I guess it didn't matter if it was left or right bevel. ;)
Thats quite a bit of paper to penetrate! I just want to know how you plan on cooking that beast?
do the same thing with a 450 gr arrow or a 550 gr arrow to see the difference......please....
Where's the "J" shaped hole?
:D
Great demo! Will have to try that with my Zwickey eskimos and see what the result is....
that says it all!
Close Call .............. :bigsmyl:
it reminds me of the hogs shield.....tough

Looks like a challenge for an online penetration contest is being issued! :D
We just got 2 new phone books and the season appears to be open...at least there's a use for them now!

i'd like to see that test as well,
mmmmm maybe i will do one with my 200gr Grizzly Kodiaks on douglas fir shafts from similar poundage bow... :)
i'm going to do a test just like this with 3 different weights and a 2 blade vs 4 blade so 6 arrows does anyone want pics of that?
Yes
X2 on more pics with various BH's and weights.
Like others , would love to see a side by side comparison with a couple lighter arrows.. 10 gpp, 9 gpp etc... thanks for posting, love testing myself.
Me too!!!
Ha ! Ha !, that aint no phone book, I'll send you a phone book from N.Y.C., now that's a phone book, you'd have to call it a Rhino book. ( just kidding ) good test !
Man I looked through the reg book for an hour and STILL can't find season dates on "phone books".
:knothead:
I could loan you one of my light weight (485gr) arrows to send through one. Come to think of it, we got in a pallet of phonebooks at work that are sitting around idle...
i'll be sending a 2216, a 2117,a weighted 2117 and a 2314 through my book 2" roughly 2 and 4 blades tonight
update i cant do 4 arrow test anymore i shot the 2216 2 blade and got 1.5" pass through shot 2216 4 blade got.5" pass through
shot 2117 2 blade needed 60 pages more to break my book (2 inches thick)
shot 2117 4 blade needed 80 pages
shot weighted 2117 4 blade , 2" of pass through
shot weighted 2117 2 blade... and robinhooded the 4 blade....
also 70# at my draw bow

i cut through the the nock and uninock
I hate when that happens !
oh man I'm totally trying that this week sometime!!!
pick a spot more then 2" away dont break a good arrow like me
This my friends is a great example of the power of the coefficient of friction. Also proves that smaller towns overall have less total frictional forces acting upon us than larger cities.
New rule to live buy. Dont move to a town whose phone book is to thick to shoot your hunting arrow completely through.
Adam, I think you've got something there...
yeah if you cant shoot an arrow through your book with a 70# bow and a heavy arrow its too big of a book
Thats awesome!
Now squirt some armor-all on your blades and grease up your arrow too and you might start getting a pass though...
That has really gotta dull up the old broadheads eh?

That was a dull practice head, I wouldn't do that with a sharp one. All of my other heads are sharpened by Ron at KME. Then the arrow might cut through it like butta!
Well here's what I came up with using 2 very different arrow weights. Both arrows fly true out of my bow. I want to do this with a better medium say 1/4" mds with a foot of foam behind it. This should give greater penetration which would give better numbers to work with. As it is it looks to me that penetration follows momentum pretty close. The 430 gr arrow is no slouch though. Just happens that the 708 gr @ 160 matches my mental computer.
I should mention that the 430 gr arrow had a sharp magnus 100 gr 2 blade broadhead and the 708 gr arrow had a sharp 250gr grizzly.
- Weight 708 gr 160 fps 40.26 KE .503 Mo
Weight 430 gr 204 fps 39.75 KE .390 MO
- KE increase 708 vs 430 = 1.27%
MO increase 708 vs 430 = 22.56%
Phone book = 1 3/8"
- 708 gr = 4.0625" penetration = 300%
430 gr = 3.125" penetration = 227.3%
Penetration 708 vs 430 = 23.08% increase
Loved this post! Would like to see some different ones similar to this!
i feel an experiment coming on....
Cool stuff, thanx for sharing....
Looking forward to more pix....
