Title: Which epoxy...
Post by: Rigs on September 10, 2012, 11:02:00 AM
Greetings All,

I'm looking to glue some Zwickey Black Diamonds to some screw in adapters.  I found out this am that a torch will bubble the paint...

Which epoxy have you found, thru experience, makes a good bond between the head and adapter?

Thanks in advance.

Happy hunting,
Jason

I would assume any epoxy would work fine.

FWIW I use heat melt glue on Zwickey's all the time and have minimal problems.  The trick is just going easy on the heat and not putting the broadhead right in the flame.  It really helps if you use an alcohol burner or something like that rather than a torch

Thanks,

I'll try to keep em farther from the flame and see what happens...

Happy hunting,
Jason

Probably the strongest would be the slower setting JB weld. Fast set epoxies are quite a bit weaker then slow sets. The inside of ferrule needs to be clean.

I have a favorite epoxy that I started using in Germany. Uhu epoxy. I've only seen UHU for sale as the soft-hold glue sticks in the States, but I finally found an importer for the epoxy. It would be considered a 24-hour epoxy, but it more than triples its final holding strength and the cure time decreases with temperature. It can be cured at up to 200 degrees C which is way hotter than the usual handle material can stand on my knives. I usually cure it at 170 F because that is as low as my oven goes. With Micarta, though, I've run it up to 250 F and it cures in 1/2 hour at that temp and you have to grind it off to break the bond. You can't chip it off.

I use hot melt, but heat with just a candle. I would JB weld 5 minute if I was was going with epoxy.

I have adapters with Bear razor heads which I joined using JB Weld in the early 80's. Still using them after all these years and have yet to have one separate.
I'd say JB Weld works just fine!

I have never had a problem with regular 24 hour cure epoxy you get from Walmart. That said I prefer Easton's hot melt.

G flex is probably the strongest you will find. Sell at west marine. 20 bucks will get you enough to last forever.  Bill

I've used both JB Weld and Loctite brand epoxy with good results.
