Title: help needed bare shaft tuning
Post by: kwyk styk shooter on September 09, 2012, 07:47:00 PM
I'm trying to bare shaft tune my 60# cari-bow wolverine. I think I have the proper arrow lenth because it's flying straight from side to side. My issue is that my arrow nock is flying high. According to solve this problem i should lower my nock on the bow. I tried that little by little but it doesn't solve it. I end up bringing it to far down until my arrows flies out of wack. so i end up back where i started. I have the same bow at 52# and i tuned that one perfected. my arrows are eastons full metal jackets 400's, brass insert and 300gr tip. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Could be something with your release, or maybe a slightly too stiff arrow?

Have you tried bringing your nock point up.

I think trying to raise the nock is a good idea. The other thing is,a lot of front end weight can cause that to happen on a bare shaft. That being the case, the fletched shaft should shoot fine.

Try two nocking points

Try using a piece of leather on the shelf.   For years I used Velcro and had the same issues.   For some reason a harder shelf surface helps clean up the nock high.  This was a trick Allen Shafer taught me....

I agree with Rraming. If you're not using two knocking points, I'd bet your arrow is sliding down the string upon release and contacting the shelf.

Yep...two nocking points is huge.  I didn't notice that comment the first time through the thread.

I have the same issue with my recurve.  No matter what I did I had knock high.  I think it is my release but don't know.  My solution....I put a bear weather rest on and can shoot bare shafts out to 40 yards and they show just barely weak.  Almost fly straight.  I have two knock points also.

What's your draw length?  Do you cant the bow when you shoot?  Just thinking that a 60# bow with 400's with over 300gr. up front in gonna be pretty weak spined and if you cant the bow much it could look like a nock issue.  Just a thought.

Thanks for the advise guys I've never heard of having nocking points. I'm going to give that a try. Mike my draw lenght is probably around 27inchs maybe a hair under and my arrows are 28 1/4 inchs long

Soft (or soft enough for tuning purposes) on the side/strikeplate and hard and slick for the shelf for me.

You should have at least one nock point above the arrow. Take a look at this website for the easiest and probably most effective way to bare shaft tune.  http://bowmaker.net/tuning.htm
