Hi Folks
It seems like we are having a pretty warm late summer/early fall, if it continues I'm pretty sure we are going to have serious mosquitos in early october for our bow season. I'm wondering if any of you use a ThermaCell and if you do, what you think? I'm most worried about broadcasting a smell that I can't detect but that a deer can.
Thanks for your help
Chris
They work great and I don't worry about the scent. If they smell it they smell me and that's the bigger problem.
AWESOME
No worry about scent....I have never had them notice it. And like previously said if they smell it they will smell you.
Wouldn't go hunting without my Thermacell. I have used it on bear hunts, hog hunts, and deer hunts without any problem.
I hunt in the swamps of SC, I don't use anything but a thermocell.
Lowcountry of SC where if you are out in morning or evening...mosquitoes are going to be all over you. I use a thermacell and nothing else...have for past few years since the things came out. I dont worry about smell as I play wind anyhow as bowhunter....and any smell noticeable is not human and is far worse than swatting mosquitoes or putting stinky deet all over.
I have it strapped to my quiver right now....so it is always with me.
Wow... I figured they were total nonsense! Im shocked to hear positive responses!
They work awesome and as Joeabowhunter says don't worry about the smell.
If you haven't used one I would recommend it. I asked a friend recently about using it for early deer and he swears by it too. Can't wait to try mine out soon.
No sir, not nonsense. One of the few gizmos I own that really works as advertised! I wouldn't take $500 for mine if I couldn't get another one.
I got an opening day deer today with my Thermacell wide open.
Don't leave home without it going.
I was hunting Monday Morning here in VA and the tree I had it leaned up against was hollow and there were beetles and ants dropping dead out of it. I don't know if the Thermacell had anything to do with it but they were. The Mosquitos never bothered me once I got it fired up either.
They are awesome. Deer don't seem to mind the scent of it at all. The only downside is that on highly windy days it's not as effective because the "cloud" of stuff gets blown off. However, if you place your Thermacell 2-3 feed upwind from you then it will still give you some benefits.
Love mine too. Works great out night catfishing too.
They stink, I can smell it and have not had a deer come around when it was in the stand with me. I have used it maybe 10 times, could just be bad luck! It does what it is suppose to do though.
I use one, and have killed many deer while it was on.
Mine works just fine! Yeah they aint scentless, but if youre playin the wind that dont matter no how. Just be sure and carry an extra repellent pad when you use it. They can dry out pretty quick if it's hot outside.
I believe they also have earth sented wafers.
we don't have quite the problem some of you guys do but I bought two this year for camping and they worked great. They were highly recommended from a bunch of guys on the handgun hunting website I'm on and they said not to worry about the smell either. I did pick up some of the earth scented wafers for the heck of it but alot of these guys were using them in Alaska and Maine while bear hunting and said they performed perfect and the smell didn't bother the bears at all.
I'll forget alot of things....but not my thermacell.
Hardwood bottoms of Louisiana. Will not hunt in October without it. Oh, it takes about 5 minutes to really work, so light it on the way to your stand
I have been eat up with mosquitoes the last few years in early season. I have been thinking about one but thought they were much more expensive. I just looked them up and couldn't believe they were under $30. I'll have one very soon.

When you get one go ahead and buy a four-pak refill.
a thermacell is worth its wieght in gold it keep the skeets off of you an don't spook game
Not nonsense at all. One of the few products that actually does everything it claims to do. I doubt you'll be disappointed.
Another resounding YES! Don't know how we hunted without them back in the day! Living in the woods that I hunt we buy the bulk packs of pads and butane from thermacell directly and use them almost all year long. Tried the earth scent and was not impressed. It stinks pretty bad.
Only thing I've found to watch for is getting it super close to your face. I sat all day once with the unit less than a foot from my head and the fumes caused my face to break out like poison ivy. eyes about swelled shut. Wasn't fun. But better than death by blood loss!

Noted and thanks.
check amazon for the thermacells, I paid 16.00 a piece for mine and they were nib from a store.
If I did not a thermo cell I could not even hunt in the MD swamps.forgetting the thermo cell.is a major no no.
Mine is alwAys on in early season here in Arkansas. Killed deer with it doing its job. They are great. If I leave it at home I will not go in river bottoms. Would just be a husk left of me in an hour. Lol. Great product that's lives up to the job.
I was skeptical when I bought mine but after a bear hunt here in Michigan's U P I was a believer. Had stands set up to film for hunting bear and it kept the bugs away from both of us. I have also heard of guys putting doe in heat on the used scent pads and setting it out away from their stand and having good results with it bringing bucks in.
Back in the early 80's I was never in the swamps without being covered head to toe in 99% DEET, talk about stink. But the deer never seemed to mind the smell, at least I killed plenty of them while wearing it. The downside was at times my legs and back felt like I was laying on a bed of nails with so many skeeters biting at one time. :( And DEET ate the finish off of many of my bows.
Since switching to a thermacell I have never had that problem, within 4 minutes after firing it up skeeters are GONE. And around here the skeeter is considered to be the State Bird! :scared:
Don't believe it bothers deer, this past spring gobbler season I had 2 does walk within 8 feet of my ground blind and they never seemed to notice anything unusual, and the thermacell was going strong.
i also thought they were a gimmick untill i tried a buddys, i am a believer and now own 2 of em, to test it, i was sitting a stand and getting eaten alive by skeeters i lit it and after a few minuites they were gone thinkin it was a fluke i shut it off for a while and they returned again eating me up ! lit it and they were gone !! on the refills, you can save alot of $$ by refilling em yourself. do a youtube search of thermocell refill works great and WAY cheaper than buying em..
in MS, bringin a thermocell hunting is as important as bringin your bow!
Bunch of stuff in Product Review thread!
