Title: Sika hunt on 9/10-11
Post by: Barry Winner on September 05, 2012, 12:51:00 PM
For my 50th birthday my wife made me book a hunt for Sika deer, so I'm going to Muddy Marsh outfitters on September 10 and 11.  I'm going to be using my brand new HH Cheetah, 57@28.5, that she also made me order for my birthday.  What a great girl!  For those of you who have hunted with Muddy Marsh, what am I to expect?

I live in Dorchester county but on the other side of Rt.50 where the little vampire skeaters aren't as bad...Where some gloves, face net and don't leave any part of your body exposed this early in the year..Those skeaters are the size of hummingbirds and sometimes you can kill 1000 with one swipe...Take a keg of whatever blood type you have...They are worse at sunrise and sunset...I personally used to go to Assateaque Island cause it was free hunting back in the early 80's and 90's with a group of locals here but Dorchester has some public land you could hunt also but you need to check in about permits cause I don't go there anymore ...Blackwater has quite a bit but you probally can contact Steve Kendrot who hunts it hard and knows all the ends and outs and he used to be here on Tradgang quite a bit..He is a Biologist down there and we know each other but he's more involved with what's happening down there...Just spay yourself very good and enjoy the sounds of the Sika's and if you never heard one before they can make you soil your undies the first time you hear one bugle...  :biglaugh:  Happy Birthday and carry your extra blood bottle...If I see a fella around with a million welts on him I'll know it was you...

If you see does that look like spotted fawns they are adult females. They are very tiny and have spots on their backs. Most people who see them for the first time think they are all fawns running around.

That wife of yours sure is bossy!
Making you do this and that. But you're obviously a good man who does as he's told.
I guess you'll just have to make the best of it...
Happy Birthday!

Yea ha, I'll be in Vienna from Friday till my wife tells me to come home.

The skeeters are unlike anything I've ever seen.  Definitely cover up.  I was there a couple weeks ago and we lucked out with a breeze.  To me, some of the most fun and interesting hunting to do.  Very small targets that like to move at o'dark thirty.  The sound of a bugle across the marsh is breathe taking.

Awesome! I tried to book a hunt for October as a birthday present to myself only to find out they are booked solid clear into January. Looks like I will have to go to black water. Have fun and hit him on the hairy side lol.  Lawman

Was down there a day or two ago and there is plenty of standing water....THERMACELL is a must!!!!!!

Muddy Marsh is a good operation and TJ and Joe are good guys with some great ground. The heat may suck some of the fun out of things but enjoy it and remember your allowed 2 of em so if your only hunting two days, shoot the 1st two you see, they eat way to go not to go home with out something!

I was down this past weekend and the skeeters were bad while walking thru the water kicking them up. The Thermacell is still a must have in a treestand.

The best advice I can give is to stay as still as possible. They can be tough to pick out.

Sika hunting is a blast!!  I've seen them spook and look like a mulie pogoing through the grass.  Outstanding tablefare.  Take plenty of arrows and you can learn to hit moving targets shooting mosquitoes.

Fun hunt! You'll have a blast! Ditto on the mosquito warning!!! Anything you can do to keep them at bay will improve your enjoyment! I wear hipboots, bugtamer tops and beanie hats to keep them off!!

reddodge is right...the does look like fawns with all the spots they have!!!

Nice one Yohon. Just remember, any Sika with a bow is a trophy. Don't be too picky and 6 pointers are NOT behind every tree as the outfitters like to tell you.

I've been fortunate enough to hunt at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge for Sika 5 times.
This is my first year applying for their bowhunt.  Draw results are due out tomorrow morning, so am anxious to find out if I'll be able to head after them during the rut with my bow.
Sika hunting is addictive.  Seems they have more of a knack for popping up when you least expect them more than any animal I've ever hunted.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Ken

Sorry for the delayed update!  Got back from the hunt then got swamped at work.

The hunt was great even though I was the only one in camp who didn't get a sika.  WE hunted until about 10am and then again from 4pm until the end of legal shooting hours. The strategy was to hunt stands on travel areas or marsh edges in the morning and then over feeders(legal in MD) in the evening. I did see a sika hind on the morning of the second day, but she came through the marsh at about 35 yards.  Too far for me.

MuddyMarsh Outfitters did a great job trying to get us all shot opportunities.  Five of the six people got shots and five sikas were taken on the two-day hunt.  I will definitely go back again.
