Title: Skunk odor
Post by: Jon Stewart on September 02, 2012, 10:45:00 PM
Anyone have any tips on how to tame the slight odor of tanned skunk hide.  Picked on up at Flint Ridge today to make a back quiver for my grandson and the hide stinks a bit.

Peroxide!

Since it's already tanned it might be tuff to get rid of but worth a try.

What process would you use?

my dad used to trap for pelts during WWII, they built smudge fires to rid the odor off them and the pelts, think he said they built regular fire and put a wet slice of hay  on it and the smoke/steam would rid the odor

Peroxide might bleach out the hair color. There is a skunk odor neutralizer sold in a pump spray bottle at Tractor Supply. I've used it in my boss' barn when he shot one inside it. Took a week or so but it did work.

This is it at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Skunk-Odor-Remover/dp/B000NJJKCM/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_5)

There is a shake on clay product that works well. It absorbs the odor and then you shake it off. It works really well.

Nope it won't bleach it out if you use 1 qt peroxide(Or white vineger), 1/4 cup Baking soda and a table spoon of Dawn dish soap. Some guys even use two qts for the same mixture amount but I found it not neccesary.

Mix it up and put it in a spray bottle. It will work on most foul smells even dead animal smells.

When I was in the Wildlife control business I kept a gallon spray jug mixed at all times in my truck and used it for almost anything that smelled terrible. I always had dead animal and skunk spray calls and this worked great hundreds of times.

If your animals get sprayed don't use watered down tamato juice use good Ketchup and rub into there fur it works great and will not harm the animal. I hope this works for you too!

Do as KS Trapper says. I too have a wildlife control business, that's the recipe that works the best.

It's a skunk, it's supposed to smell that way. I'd keep it the way it is. Fresh skunk is pretty badt but that slight smell on a tanned hide always reminds me of the outdoors.

Yep,What K.S. Trapper says. I don't have a wildlife control buisness, but I had and have another Staffy bull terrier that think that getting sprayed is worth the chance to wrastle a skunk!!! Used that mixture probably 1/2 dozen times on them,it works well.

I will try what KS Trapper posted. Someone on *********** posted the same formula but didn't say to spray it on.  I thought I was supposed to soak it in the mixture.  Thanks.

killinstuff, tell that to my 5 year old grand daughter that is going to be wearing the quiver. That little princess ain't buying that, LOL

at the drug store there is a cream/liquid called Tecnu. It is for removing poison ivy/oak...which are oils. Skunk scent is an oil as well. It works well....used it on my dog last year and worked like a champ.
