I had an elk herd IN CAMP last night between the llamas and the tent, and I've had two 5x5s at 15 yards, but the wascally buggers snuck in together when not expected, no chance for a shot, but it was nice to see them up close and personal.

No bugling on the mountain I was on, but fresh rubs all over the place. All we need is a touch of frost on the grass and ITS ON!

Between six and eight thousand, which is the Golden Zone for Idaho.

At the peak of the rut, I will concentrate around 6,500. Kilt every bull I have kilt right about there.

For other states, add or subtract, depending on your elk.

Oh, by the way. . .I got a full snoot full of elk a day or so ago, won't sleep much until the season ends. MAN I love this stuff!

Just got home from a week in the woods here in Oregon. Great time...didn't take an elk home with me...yet! I cow called a mature 5X5 to about 15yds. But he just wouldn't take that last step out from behind the small pines that were in front of him. Played around with another small raghorn. I'm heading back for the last 10 days of the season. Hope to share some more stories with pictures then.
Good hunting guys!
David

While there are no dead elk in these pictures, I have a feeling those of you who love elk country will still enjoy seeing them.

The first is the small spring near my tent. I always place a small pipe in springs to make it easier to get the water, and I dig a deep pool below the pipe to keep tasty things like grouse cool). The second photo is the second most exciting thing to see when elk hunting-----a steaming hot rub!

My son and I went elk hunting last weekend here in Colorado. We knew it's still a little hot and a little early for much action yet but we wanted to check it out just the same.  We backpacked 1-1/2 hours into our favorite area and set up camp.  As we're setting up our tent we hear a crash and look up in time to see a cow elk 40 yards away heading out.  Must have been coming down to our little spring for a drink.  Our spring is down to a trickle but enough to fill our Platypus water filter bag.  Lowest water flow I've seen there in 20+ years.  Saturday morning early we head uphill from camp and start seeing elk within 100 yards of camp.  No bugles yet, no herding up yet, no gimme shots.  Plenty of cow talk though.  We noticed more of the beetle kill pine trees have blown down since last year and getting through them is getting tougher and tougher.  The elk obviously like it though.  We spot & stalk by the way. 3 steps, stop, look and listen.  I usually hear or smell them before I see them.  I see an elk about 25 yards uphill of me in the dense blow-down timber so I slowly kneel down and nock an arrow.  Darn- it's a spike elk, not legal yet.  Movement to each side of him though.  A 4x4 on his left and another 4x4 to his right.  No cows or big bulls.  They must have heard me stalking but don't see or smell me.  They're alarmed but don't spook.  I draw back my 58# longbow aiming at the right 4x4 but he's nervously walking back and forth and I can't get a clear shot at him thru all the downed timber.  I hold and hold and my arm starts to shake a bit.  I finally have to let down.  All three elk decide they have had enough and vacate at a medium pace.  Good first day.  We run into more elk (lot's of cow talk) on the cool north side of the mountain but can't get close enough for a shot.  This is the area where I bugled a big 6x6 into 15 yards from my son last fall. He missed his shot he was so nervous.  Ended up getting a decent 5x5 later though.  We'll be back next weekend (I love that about living in Colorado).  Weather forcast looks cooler and wetter.  Excellent.  I'll keep you posted and try to add some photos.

I've been in them a few times but no shots yet.  I'm chasing roosevelts in the NW coastal mountains here in OR and there is no shortage of them.  I would have been tagged out with cows if I were using modern gear but I've only had one small bull in range and he wouldn't give me the angle on the shot.

Been into a few, but no tags filled yet. Headed back the 15th-23rd.  Took this pic Sunday morning as a big group of cows and small bulls crossed in front of us.

Searched for 7 days last week without seeing anything but doe deer. I'm heading back up the end of this week to another, and hopefully better, spot.

Got back from north central CO on Sunday and had the best week of elk hunting i've ever had. Me and another trad buddy saw 8 different bulls and 4 cows we just could'nt seal the deal. Called in 4 of those bulls in in one day(9/7) what a rush! Where we were the elk seemed to be hanging around 10,400 and below, bugling was only in early a.m. and after sunset and there was'nt much of it. Goodluck!

Randy shot one the other night. I'm sure he'll have pics up soon. I'm guessing he headed back up into the mountains after coming into town and texting me a teaser pic of him with a 5x5. He hasn't been responding to my texts so....
Can't wait to hear back!
Great job on those of you who have scored!
I've been walking around in the high country with shorts and a T shirt on, it's been so warm here!
C'mon snow!
