Season opens in the morning. I'm really looking forward to it. Who's going and what is your setup? I'm using my 47# @ 28" Griffin longbow with 2117 arrows with hammerhead blunts.
I might get out Sunday or Monday morning. I may use my new Shrew Classic Hunter with 3555's and 125gr blunts. I may have some hammerheads. I'll use them if I can find 'em.
Or I'll use my trusty old BW PTFX with 2117's.

:)
I look forward to hunting with you Ron!
F-Manny
ill be using my 70# jefferys longbow with 650 grain 2216's with washiers behind the fieldpoint
Manny, I look forward to hunting with you too, my friend!
Not hunting today but I will be using a 68 Bear grizzly, Big river Log bow or Griffin longbow. arrows are an assortment with hex heads, blunts and Flu flus.
Good luck fellers!
Stood in the kitchen this morning and watched two squirrels enter the yard and said to myself, "if it was Sept 1 you two would be in trouble!" HOKEY SMOKES BOWINKLE it is Sept 1! Still in my camo bathrobe I grabbed my Hill Country Mohican longbow, 2 goldtip 35/55 arrows and screwed in a couple 125gr thumpers . I went out the front door and snuck around to the back of the house, but just as quick as they came into the yard, they were gone. Tomorrow, watch out! I'm ready now, heck I even know what day it is
I had a good morning and got my first squirrel with trad gear. He's a small red squirrel but I'm very proud. Nice going!
Reds are tough, that's some good shootin!
I bought the Griffin at Denton this year and fits me perfect. It hits where I look and now I can't wait for deer season.
Nice shooting Ron. Where were ya hunting?
:clapper:
Thanks Ron. Behind the house in the town of Volney.
Congrats. i think thats the prettiest red squirrel i ever seen!
Ron has set the bar high on opening day. I think I will definitely try to get out tomorrow for a couple hours in the morning. I'd be happy just getting a shot LOL!
im heading out tomorrow afternoon
Good shooting! Nice squirrel.
Thanks Charlie, I can't wait to get back out this coming weekend. I'm getting some good practice in and some great scouting for deer.
As soon as we get a cool front
Been really muggy and hot lately.
Shot my bow yesterday and did some yard cleanup and was soaking wet when I came in
Squirrels are hard targets so to those who are successfule congrats
But I will soon me losing an arrow :biglaugh:
getting out again this morning hope i can smack a fat one
Cool! I want to see the squirrel that falls to the 70# bow, though.......
well i missed a shot at 15 yards so far , he might have chunks of the rock that exploded next to him stuck in him though
Nice work on the red, they're hard little buggers to hit.
I been layin em right out,our season opens up with your guys'.Been using a .22 though, had to hurry and get some so the old lady could make me up a nice pot of squirrel jambalaya.
Gonna try to get out with the 54# silvertip and some woodies with ace hex heads this weekend, maybe.
I went Mon. morning until 11:30. I saw about 10 of them and killed one with my homemade Hybrid Flatbow after missing him with the first shot. I also missed 5 other times. I found out when I do well hunting tree rats with the bow , it makes me a much better deer hunter.
wish the place I hunt them was better for bows. Its to thick, the squirrels almost never are on teh ground and they take cover every time you move. Really tricky with bow. Im heading out around 6 or 7 am (when ever the rain stops) but the bows staying home today, airguns time to shine. will deffinatly try with the longbow befor ehte season ends though :)
longrifle, You must do pretty well at hunting tree rats because you do really well with the deer!
Arrgh... missed my first squirrel of the season tonight...I will get my revenge!
I went out Saturday morning with my new Shrew. No squirrels down. But there was an unlucky chipmonk that got in the way of a flying 1916 Easton Jazz with a 125gr hammerhead attached to it:

Thanks Eric. It's a nice shooting bow.
Ron, great shot and a beautiful bow you got there.
Thanks Ron. I hope to get out again this week-end.
Just got back home from hunting, missed 6 more times tonight, smacked one off the side of a tree but, didn't recover him. They are in the shagbark hickory's.
I'm gonna try to go out this afternoon. I've been working alot and need some time in the woods. Ron, we should get together some time and go stumping.
Here is that unlucky critter.

Hey Ron,
There are plenty of good stumps over in the Klondike Forest. Lots of acorns dropping this year, too. Quite a bit of the area is open hardwoods with little undergrowth. Great for stumping. It is about 7 or 8 miles east of Parish in West Amboy.
This fella made the mistake of running parallel to me in a ditch while I was walking a logging road.

You guys are really raising the bar here. Great shots.
Man you guys are getting me excited! Ive been wanting to go out but dont have the ingredients yet for a recipie I want to try. Ill be out Saturday or Sunday hopefully with some pics to show!!
I just got back from the woods. Seen alot of big grays but could'nt get close enough. I ended up getting a chipmunk at about 12 yards. My battery died on the camera. so I'll get a picture up a little later.
I shot this one at 12 yrds using a rubber blunt. I'm having alot fun with squirrel hunting. Remember aim small, miss sm (http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e261/nybowman/archery/DSC00280.jpg)all.
Good shooting Ron!
Good looking bow, too.
Wow the poor chipmunks are getting the brunt of everyone's pent up energy!! :archer2:
Chipmunk Squad has hit the woods! 8)
Anybody finding any beechnuts???
I'm not seeing beechnuts yet but the hickory nuts are dropping. At least in my area.
I joined forces with Ron Purdy this morning And did a stump shoot/hunt. We didn't get any squirrels but, shot alot of stumps. I had a great time and got to know a fellow tradganger.
We had a good time in the Klondike Forest! No squirrels or chipmonks down, but a lot of dead stumps. I missed a couple chipmonks on a stone wall. One by about 3 inches and the other, well, by about a mile.
It was very good to meet you, Ron. And Ron is a very good shot with that great looking Griffin. I am very much looking forward to doing it again.
This afternoon, my better half said she needed a few acorns for a project with the grandkids. So, being the generous old man that I am, I grabbed my bow and offered to go over to the Klondike Forest and fetch her some. Along with a small bag of acorns, I got a nice sized grey squirrel with my Shrew CH! Pics tomorrow when I get to work!
Ron, I got it by that stone wall we found on Sunday.
Congrats Ron on the squirrel.
Hey congrats Ron. That seemed like a good spot. I've been out also but, had no luck.
Here are some pics:

Great shooting! You've got me beat. I can't seam to get a good shot on a grey. I seen a black squirrel yesterday. I tried stalking up on him with no success. Good luck hunting everyone.
Thanks Ron. I might sneak out again tomorrow after work. Man, a black squirrel. That would be a nice one to get!
Way to shoot Ron, Im 0 for 3 this year with my selfbow. I hit where I was shooting but the skwerls had moved on.
Thanks Izzy. This is a ton of fun and great practice. I might go out again this evening. I went out to level up and strap down my ladder stand last night and the red squirrels were going "nuts" in some beech trees.
I went yesterday sweated alot but came home empty handed. I might give it a go tonight supposed to be some nice weather coming so ill be out more.
You guys are lucky, Squirrel season doesnt open till Oct. 15 here in NC. Keep up the good shooting!
Red squirrels are an unprotected species up here in NY. So we can hunt them year 'round with no bag limit if we want to.
Went out yesterday, it was so dry I couldnt get close!
You guys eat squirrel up north?
Sure do. Alot of times I add it to my "Road Kill Stew", or I fry it. If I get enough, I'll just make a stew on its own.

Deer season opens before squirrel? That aint right.
Sean B man you should try squirrel dumplings! They are really good!
wallee, PM me the recipe, or put in the recipe thread.
Sean B pm sent!
Shot another one tonight, that's 2 so far with my homemade hybrid-flatbow.
Good shooting longrifle!
Thanks Ron, if you only knew how many times i missed this year you might think differently. Went out both a.m. and p.m. today missed a couple more times in the a.m. and hit and lost one tonight. It's hard to sneak up on them with 3 of my 4 children trailing behind me. Sometimes blunts work great and other times not so good.
Congratulations longrifle. Great shooting. If you think it's tough to sneak up on them with your kids, try sneaking up on them with mine! hahaha :biglaugh:
:clapper:
:clapper: way to go guys good shooting i wish we had tree rats.
Jeff, Let me send you some ;)
