Title: Passing on a shot?
Post by: Jeff Roark on August 29, 2012, 03:07:00 PM
How many of you will pass on a shot if its sprinkling or threatening a rain shower?

Opening weekend here and looks like scattered thunderstorms all 3 days I will be off.

Don't plan on making a bad shot. I think deer movement is better on the wet dreary days. So go for it if you can brave it.

If it's raining to hard to shoot, I'm probably headed back to the truck.  If I was out there in it, and the perfect shot presented itself, I don't think I could resist.

I don't hunt as much in the rain as I used to. Scattered showers or very light rain, I'd shoot. Steady rain or hard downpours, I'm heading back to camp and would pass on a shot. Tough call until your in the moment.

Lost a few to rain showers. I don't hunt in the rain so I don't have to decide  on the spot. I decided to hunt or not to hunt. If i'm hunting there is little to no chance of rain so I'll take the shot. That's why I'm out there....but not in the rain. The worst feeling in the world is making a fatal shot and not recovering the animal.

Hunting in the mountains means rapid weather changes. A shot in nice clear weather can mean following up a 1/2 hour later in anything from rain to snow this time of year.

If the shot is where it's supposed to be it's dead within 100 yards or less, regardless of the weather.

My first response is no because I have made good shots on deer early season with folige is thick and rain washed away the blood and I wouldn't find the deer till the next day and with high temps here in September I would not chance eating the animal.

That being said I agree with TJ I don't plan on making a bad shot.  I normally don't go out in a rain but if I'm there and it starts I would probably still take a shot if a good shot presented itself.

I'll take one in a light rain but heavy rain I won't be out there. Lost a good one 35+ years ago in a heavy rain. Didn't get heavy until after I shot.

If a light rain I would, but would be more picky on the shot!

I love hunting in a light rain.  I get caught in hard rain quite a bit too.  I have shot several deer when it is raining without any serious trailing problems.  Not saying that it can't happen I just get real picky about shot selection in those conditions.

I don't think anyone plans on making a bad shot. Stuff happens......I don't take it if it's raining or late, I feel no need to feed the coyotes where I hunt!

Tim,

A deer is probably the only thing that dog will run!

if its light rain and no threat of downpour then go for it.
A lot depends on where you are at. Field shot and I can see where the dee runs...yes
Deep cover and hard to see where it run...pass

If your not confident that your arrow won't be placed in the vitals....then don't shoot. Doesn't matter if it's raining or blue bird weather.

We have taken quite a few deer in the rain. A great time to still hunt or put on small drives. A good shot results in a dead animal. I'll shoot....
