Title: Staining Carbon Arrows
Post by: BowZen on August 28, 2012, 03:29:00 PM
I have goldtip 3355 carbon arrows that I would like to stain a darker color. Is this possible and if so what stain works best? Once the stain is applied, what do you use to seal them? Any help would be appreciated.

Actual product names/brands would be very useful.

Thank you.

I haven't tried it . I use a lot of leather stain for various projects from bows to wood arrows.
I've spilled the stain on Formica and it does soak in some.
If I remember tomorrow I'll give it a try.

Don"t know how well this picture will show.
I put on a heavy coat of dark brown fiebings leather dye.
If you wanted darker mahogany would do it.
it doesn't seam to rub off easy. if for hunting arrows no sealer would be needed.
For practice arrows might wear off.

Carbon is black and I don't think the carbon will take a stain, but the binding glue and coatings might.

Are you trying to stain the traditional arrows?

Try a permanent marker, or shoe polish. Let it dry good.  Most stains penetrate and that would be a problem with graphite, or aluminum. You may need to sand the finish lightly to get it to stain.

I have done it many times. I use fiebings leather dye. Wipe it on fairly heavy and allow to sit for a few minutes and then wipe off any excess. It's not really soaking in by drying on the surface. YOu can use a little alcohol on a rag if you would like to lighten the color. Just wet the rag and wipe off as little or as much as you like.

Best to cut shafts after because you will need to hold them at one end or the other and it is hard to get all the finger prints off unless you cut them off.

It will wear a little with target shooting, but I think it just makes them look more rustic.

I gotta try this with my GT Trads.  As for holding the shaft, I think a long #8/32 bolt threaded into the insert might work.
