does anybody know of a vane that can be shot off the shelf? I dont mind the feathers but after they go thru a deer or get wet I dont wanna have to refletch and they are noisy if you bump them in the stand. thx guys

Some guys talk of using the "Rain Vane" by Delta, but it does not sound like many of them have much luck to me. Lot easier to slap a $2.99 rest on and get better flight with your feather fletched arrows too.

It doesn't work very well off the shelf. a flipper rest as Steve is referring to works real well BUT you have to shoot all your arrows off that rest. There's definitely a differen "visual" and the arrows will fly naturally higher. Theoretically, if you're bow is properly tuned for its arrow. A wet feathered arrow or one without feathers should fly exactly the same as a dry one. The noise is a different story but I don't think that kind of noise is too disruptive. There are lots of topics on this in the pow wow. Just do a search VANES and see what comes up...

I bought some strings from a fella here in my home state a while back.
While I was talking to him we talked some about fletching. He shoots vanes off the shelf, and if you've ever seen any of his shooting videos, you can tell they fly just as good as feathers.
Anyway, he taught me how to do it, and it works flawlessly. It isn't easy, and requires some real thought go into the tuning process, but it's worth it.
Fact is, any vane can be tuned to shoot well off the shelf if you want to spend the time it takes to get it done.
I cant explain the process well enough to help you, other than to say - Yes you can.

I thought about going to the flipper rest but I shoot longbows and Im just not sure how that would work. Guess I could try and see what happens. I know Paul Schafer used a elevated rest so its gotta be a good way to do it. :) I just love the quietness of a longbow; no string slap and limbs and debris doesnt get caught between the limb and string. Thanks for every ones help. I appreciate it. Tom

Why are you refletching after they go thru a deer or thet get wet? Let them dry, then steam them over a pot of boiling water. (concentrate the steam) They will return to their normal shape.
Unless they are damaged of course, then yes, they will have to be replaced!

I might have to end up doing that pineknot but I like vanes much better. they are quiet if you bump them in the stand and just wash off clean with warm water. I spoke to a gentleman tonight that told me what I need to do to be able to use the vanes off the shelf. Gonna get that rolling this next week if Isaac will go away
