Title: Newbie's Dilemma
Post by: Kingsnake on August 25, 2012, 05:20:00 PM
OK, so I stomped on a broadhead a few weeks ago and slowed down my shooting practice.  Now, the early season is 7 days away and my groups are not where I want them for next Saturday.

Do I  . ..

1. Practice like hell every day this week and hunt the recurve anyhow and try to get REALLY close;
2.  Hunt the old compound on opening day and keep practicing with the recurve until I feel ready; or,
3.  Take only my video camera and film my buddy's hunt?

Either option would work for me if I were in your predicament... just be mindful of your abilities. If you can't get your groups to tighten up to the point where you can feel comfortable taking a close shot then you'll be doing right by your intended game by taking out the wheels for a spin till you're good to go with the stick.

Good luck and get that foot mended.

Hunt.
Use what you shoot the best.
Can you pick up the wheels and shoot well, right now?
Then practice with your recurve and see what your test scores are come Friday. Pick what you feel confident with.

Let your buddy worry about videoing himself.

Sorry to hear about the foot man...hope its healing up well.

Like killy said hunt with what is most comfortable and confident for you. If you can pick up the compound and get her back in the groove then go with that. If you are itching to put that recurve in the woods just carry her around practicing your stalking skills on some days and hunt with the wheely on others to fill the freezer.

Good luck with whatever decision you end up making.

Thanks, all.  I guess I felt pressured to decide today.  In reality, I guess I can keep working at it and decided on Friday, as Killy said.  I really don't even need to shoot, since I am still sittin' on a buit of venison from last year.

I haven't had to follow a "blood trail to nowhere" in a long time, and I hope not to have to do that again.

How are you doing with your 1st shot. When you hunt you don't get to shoot groups. It's the 1st arrow that counts.

I,second that first shot vs group.
Do more stump shooting or a version of it where you only get one shot.
Move around at different angles all, within a determined close distance, say inside 15 yards.
By Friday you'll know the right choice.
