Title: First rubs of 2012
Post by: RLA on August 25, 2012, 02:24:00 AM
Went on a hike today to move some trail cams to a spot I'll be hunting.

I found fresh rubs, might be a little earlier than last year?

Anyone else finding any in SW MO yet?

Any cattle in the area? I have seen range bulls do that.

Any picks of shed bucks yet?

It's getting close to shedding time but I haven't seen anybody that has any pics yet. Our bucks usually shed in the first 12 days of September so it's getting close but those are pretty aggressive size rubs.

It's been a crazy year so who knows   :dunno:   Pretty cool!

Did some scouting last weekend and found no fresh rubs here in West Central MO.  Plan to go out tomorrow.  I'm seeing a lot of bucks in velvet along the roads at night lately... more than other years for some reason.

Doesn' t look all that fresh  IMO.  That cedar would be blazing with color.

No cattle, as a dairy farmer, I'm unfortunately  pretty familiar with what cows can do to your trees K.S.Trapper. No doubt about what it is and it being fresh! The tore up ground around the tree made it pretty obvious, with fresh cedar shavings, cell phone pic's arn't great. But look, I aint trying to play a joke on anybody, just thought it was interesting and early. When I pull cards next Friday they should tell the story.

And I agree K.S.Trapper, it's already a Crazy year!

its not really early they usually start about mid august to early sept. but thats a good sign, that means they'r spending a good amount of time in that area.  yep ,time to go for a walk with the ticks and chiggers...oh boy!

Spray down Arrow30 ! Apparently hot & dry don't kill ticks & chiggers, there thriving.

I saw one that was rubbed lastnight. Those rubs look very aggressive for this early.

I got 4different pics of bucks fighting yesterday, and at 1 minute delay thats at least 4 minutes, and the ground was very scarred, actually it waws te scarring that i noticed first.

Probablyjust some sparring but in full velvet still i thought it was very very odd.

Maybe it will be a crazy year!

Found a scrape... yes, a scrape, with a wet spot and deer poop in it.  Had a broken overhanging licking branch too.  Now THAT is weird for August!

Saw one last week that was clean, but all others still ave velvet.  Deer researchers have found that scrapes are used from the time deer start rubbing the velvet off to some degree in a healthy herd.  Also, those rubs are not uncommon to find this time of year if you are in the bedroom of a mature deer.  Best bowhunter I have ever met looks for that kind of sign, then puts a trail camera close by.  BTW, he has well over 20 P&Y deer and counting he has killed this way.  I bet you my favorite bow the twisted and mangled sapling is a big mature buck.  God Bless
