I just moved and now have some very close neighbors. I need to get a target that doesn't make as much noise when hit. Looking for something relatively portable also.
I know this is an odd question, but figure there's got to be someone out there who has already been through this.

Are you shooting in your apartment??
Only time my target is quiet is when I miss. The arrow makes a heck of a racket, though!

A rihnehart is very quiet.
The setup I use at my friends house is:
Backstop to make it safe for the neighbors:
1) Piece of 1/2" thick oak plywood that was cut to fit under a queen size mattress (Free from college campus clean-out)
2) 8 feet of DENSE cane behind target (stalks every 2-6")
3) Couch cushions stapled to the outside of the plywood with an extra layer of pillows along the bottom (Free from college campus clean-out)
Target:
Old backpack that had a busted zipper filled with worn out clothing thrown on the ground in front of the backstop. Occasionally we'll also shoot POOF balls in front of the backstop. Both are very quiet.
reinhert block target is quiet and VERY durable
X3 on the Rhinehart block. Picked one up a couple of week's ago and that's one of the first thing I noticed.
A lot of it depends on your arrow point.. A bullet point that does not leave a shoulder at the arrow will be quieter than most field points.
Burlap bag stuffed with tee shirts NO NOISE (unless you miss) 2 finger pull out.
Hay Bale
Take some music outside with you to make some noise... I also made a 2x4 frame the holds 3 layers of 4'x4' carpet. Each layer is about 10" apart and stops an arrow quietly if I miss my target. Close places as you described should have a good sized backstop... 1 bad miss can end shooting in your backyard forever...
I also forgot to say, carpet is a great sound break. If you were to make a stand to hold one piece of carpet and put that between the target and where you don't want the sound to go you should be fine shooting your normal target...
Possible getting all you close neighbors a case of beer would not hurt also... :biglaugh:
X2 on the burlap bag. I stuff mine with just about anything, old rags, clothes, plastic grocery bags etc.
Don't let them see you shooting, its against the law in most places.Welcome too the new USA.
Against the law to shoot in your backyard in most places? I had no idea! I've shot in my backyard for years, neighbors on both sides are compound hunters. In fact we just built a "tree house" for our kids that overlooks the ravine behind our houses, we included an easily removable front railing in the design so that we an shoot without getting the tree stands out!
