Title: 5/16 Broadheads?????????
Post by: 2treks on August 22, 2012, 10:12:00 PM
OK, I need some 5/16 glue ons.
Can you all point me to the different makes and models please? This is new ground for me. I always have shot BIG heads.

Heavy would be a plus on the little guys.

Thanks a bunch,

CTT

Zwickey used to make some.  not certain if they still do.  Likely as not they are not super heavy.

They are all the same taper, so, except for the bit of overlap, they should all fit on your arrow.

We have Tuskers, but like most 5/16" heads they are fairly light.  The Tusker Spirit's are 100 grains as a glue on.

The heaviest 5/16" I can think of is the Hill.  Like mentioned above though I've had good success using 11/32" heads on 5/16" shafts.

How much would one need to grind off of the back of the ferrule to turn an 11/32" into a 5/16" ferrule?
On the 160 grain Hills it works out pretty close, right about where the grinder meets the blades.

I use about any BH on 5/16 shafts, they just go a hair past the back of the taper, but they work just fine.

It is really only an issue with certain foam targets and the ferrule hanging up on the rubber, that new tan Stanley hot melt seems to hold my Hills onto my 1918s with my McKensie deer target well enough.

I always liked the Zwickey heads but I would like a little more weight.
The 11/32 may be the way to go for me.
Thank you all again.

My experience with Ace are that they are usually between 11/32 and 5/16.  Can get them in about any weight you want.

I've been using 160 snuffers on swaged 2018s and 2020s for about 20 yrs now and its only an issue when trying to pull them backward out of a foam target....... a really big broadhead and a skinny heavy shaft really blows through critters..........

I think I will use my big ACE heads and have at it. Big holes are what we like.

Thanks again all

I've discovered that 5/16" long adapters work much much better on the 11/32" heads.  Much better contact and makes aligning stupid simple.  I have no problem with a little bit of over hang...doesn't bother me in the least.  Actually leaves a little bigger opening for the smaller arrow shaft to effortlessly travel through.  Plus plus.

On the other plus side, if you have aluminum footings on carbon shafts, it mates up for a very nice flush fit...especially if you champher the end.
