Welp, I'm getting my stuff ready to leave for Maine early Sunday for the opener of thier fall bear season. Going to hunt with Squapan Outfitters. I hunted with Tony & Lynn Bocher in 2010 and had a blast. I know that this year is going to be the same.
I'll be taking my Black Widow PCH 58" 57# @ 29" shooting 29" CE heritage shafts with 200 gr up front tipped with woodsmans.
I started this summer with a bear hunt in Quebec, and am ending it hunting in Maine. I thought that the 2 hunts would make the summer fly by, but instead, the wait for the Maine season made the summer drag on! :banghead:
I think Tony has his new cabin all ready too. he was workin away on it when i went up moose hunting in Oct. Have fun and take some pics. Joe
Sean,
My boy Jeremiah & I will be @Squapan Mountain Outfitters for opening week also... We're looking forward to the trip and sharing camp with you! Safe travels & see you soon for bear camp......
KAZ
Sean,
I'm rooting for ya!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I want to go. Next year.
Lucky you partner. Good luck and get a big one.
Oldskool(Rob McDowell) will be up there with you fellas. We have been shooting over here at the house to get him ready for the trip. He is bringing some nasty Simmons heads and my KME for any sharpening he may need to do while up there in Maine. He is also bringing a Kodak play-sport camera to record some bears and hopefully his own hunt. Maybe you guys can hook up and get both your hunts on video!
Good luck boys! Just a few more days and the arrows will be flying!!!!

Hey Sean, you gave me a really good deal on that old Black Widder bow. Thought the least I could do was give you a ride to Maine. See you Sunday morning bright and early ?
Good luck to you. I was supposed to be there but work got in the way. Tony let me roll it to next year.
Take lots of pics for us.
good luck, looking foward to the story
Dang it. I really wish I was going now, but had to sell my spot because of work. I bet it will be a great time with all the Widdow boys too.
I need to retire!
Good luck! Hopefully you will get the cooler weather we are experiencing to continue.
Good luck! Hopefully you will get the cooler weather we are experiencing to continue.
Hey Tony, good to see you post once in awhile! the earlier the better.
Rick and OBX, too bad you can't make it this year. Its tough how work gets in the way, thats why I always wish i was born rich instead of good lookng!!!!
I'm really hoping for the cooler weather. I was dying in 2010. I was hunting in shorts a Tee and my mesh leafy wear. I ran out of clothes real fast!
Word is that there is a scarcity of natural food. Baits should be very active. Post lots of pics.
Looking forward to the story(s) and the pics! :campfire:
Have a great time and good luck. I won't be able to get to Maine until the second week of Nov. My little brother has a Cow Moose tag for Zone one so I'm meeting him and my dad up there to do some deer hunting. Hopefully you'll post plenty of pics when you get back. Stay safe.
Good luck, Fellas!!! Tony and family will spoil you!!! Tell Doc I said howdy!!!

Just got a text from the Maine bear camp.....
Someone has a story to tell when they get back! I'm hearing about some BIG bears!
:campfire:
Hope everyone has a great hunt!
Well,I'm still up in Maine. I Rolled in to camp about 3:00 PM Sunday. I met quite a few Tradgangers that are here for our Squapan Mt./Black Widow Bowhunt. Its great to put names and faces together.
Monday, after getting in some practice shots I was pretty excited to get in the woods. Tony Bucher asked me if I minded sitting a stand that I hunted when I was there in 2010...I had no problem.
I was dropped off at 3:30 and was all settled in. The weather was a bit warm, but my excitement over came any discomfort that I might have felt. After several hours of watching red squerrels, I cought movement out of the corner of my eye. around 6:45 A bear came in, about 125 to 150 lbs. I watched him as the light started to fade. He would go to the bait, then walk off several times. It had moved the barrel so the opening would give a quartering possition to anything that would come in.
After about 30 to 40 mins, it walked off. I had to stand to get the blood flowing back in my feet! I look down, and out at about 5 yrds is a bear.....a big bear.....
You can't just leave us hanging........
David
Sorry Dave, its dinner time. If Lynn lets me use her computer later, I'll be back. If not, I get back in on Sunday. :bigsmyl:
You started out good Sean! eat up and get some energy to tell the rest.
I know a little about the results, but not the whole story.... Let's hear it! :notworthy:
:campfire:
My source in the bear camp was throwing around words like "Pope and Young" and "Boon and Crockett".
Just sayin'.... :saywhat:
No problem Sean, looking forward to the stories and pics!!!
David
Sean wish I was up there with you. Maybe next time . Finish the story .....Please
Jim Pyles
Well, I cant string this out so I'll finish it up. I Looked down, and there was a good bear at 5 yards under me. I was standing to let the blood flow back into my feet. I also had my lower limb resting on my toe. I was afraid to move. As he walked to the barrel, I could see that was was a good one. My heart sank as he walked away from the barrel and out of sight. about a minute later he was back at the3 barrel. He stuffed his head in and just plopped down and started to eat.
Light was fading and he was slightly quartering away. I was fighting myself to shoot or not to shoot. I just burned a whole just a little forward of center, drew and released. I heard a "THWAK" a bark and a growl. I lost sight of the arrow, so I didn't know exactly where I had hit him. I sat and shook for awhile. There was a slight breeze, so I wasn't sure if I heard a "death moan" or not.
I started to beat myself up, not knowing where the arrow hit. Jean (Jon) my guied found my arrow, it was covered with good blood and all 3 feathers were shaved off. I was still beating myself up.
I got back to camp, and Tony thought best that we try to go after him since there was a call for heavey rain. we got to the where Jean found my arrow and we found blood. we followed the trail for about 60 yrds when we lost blood. There were several trails that it could have gone. Tony decided to call it til morning.
All night long I kept replaying the shot over in my head. Each time that I did so, the worse it got. Tony felt that the bear was dead, and that there was no doubt that we'd find him. After a sleepless night, we got back to the last blood. We decided to form a scirmish line. As we were doing so, I hear "there he is!" WOW, what a feeling of relief. The bear was bigger that I had realized.
He weighed in at 365 lbs. He was shot at 18 yrds with a Black Widow PCH 58" 57# @ 29". I was shooting CE heritage shafts with 250 grn woodsmans
