Title: tab issues
Post by: Kamm1004 on August 22, 2012, 12:34:00 PM
So gang, I switched to tabs a while back and will never use a glove again (maybe a calf hair glove though) anyways, I was using the black widow 3under calf hair tab and love it! only thing is you burn through those things like crazy when you shoot daily. So I ordered a cordovan tab from RMSG cuz everyone says they last forever, they did warn me it wouldn't be as clean of a release however. Anyways, after using it two weeks I couldn't stand it. I'd be on then off then on then off. Constantly felt like I was plucking the string no matter what I did or like the tab was sticky on release. I pulled out an old warn out calf hair tab the other day and, viola, problems solved. I was 100% consistant and accurate. Not to mention the tab felt thicker with less finger pain. Has this happened to anyone else before? Is there anything I can do or put on the cordovan tab to make it slicker or have a cleaner release? Or am I just stuck buying tons of calf hair tabs every year? thanks gang

I like the Saunders Pak-Tab. Impervious to water and broke in out of the box!

I should've mentioned that I shoot 3 under exclusively. Not sure if the pak-tab would suit me well although it looks cool! also, whats the difference between the bateman cordovan and the 3under cordvan tab I have now?

The Tab you got from RMSG is most likely a Bateman.

Is there a difference in length between the tabs you are using. I have experianced these issues with tabs that are to long.

Pine pitch it n heat it in.  Then just keep working the tab to break it in so to speak. I love my cordovan tabs that's all I shoot.  Been shooting the same one for three years now.

I also like the calf hair tab. I don't worry about how long it lasts compared to other materials as they just aren't all that expensive to replace. I have never perceived the need for any kind of break-in, just put it on my hand and shoot.

I have never had an issue with a Bateman Cordovan tab and I have been shooting them for years. If I fail to get a good release, its my fault, not the fault of the tab. Could you be over-flexing your fingers at the last joint? Holding the string in the crease will cause a bad release. That is exactly the reason I got away from shooting with a glove many years ago. Good luck and enjoy the experience. It makes for a great ride.  :campfire:

One thing I always do is cut any and all excess material away from my tab.  After using it a short time, or by using my old tab as a pattern, I can tell much of what to cut.  I want barely enough protection.

You might want to start with one that is not your primary, because as you trim, you may discover you went too as you begin to feel some discomfort. Regardless of size, there is always a good bit to trim off for me.
