Picked up a Kwyk Styk and I need a new stringer. What stringer is best for a static tip recurve?
Webster...that's the only stringer that left my shop with every custom Kempf bow.
I had a custom made TD recurve with static tips, I used a Webster stringer to string it. Was not fun to string at all, actually pretty scary. :scared: I left mine strung all the time. It was strung when I traded it.
Cup and rubber block. The safest way to go. Webster is real tricky on a static tip. I have both. Cup and block is real easy.
Selway cup and block always. Tried a cup to cup strap type once three weeks ago. My static limb is now in two pieces. Trust me.
My boywer recommends a Thunderhorn Stringer/cup and block style.
The lower cup holds the string on the groove nice and tight.
Thunderhorn or Selway only !!!
Froggy, i beileve has had a static tip bow or two
 :archer2:
Push and Pull...Save on Anxiety Meds...
There ain't no push\\pullin a static.
Doowop, you might want to retract that statement, the bow,he is referring about was mine 3 weeks ago,and I have 3 more static tips on the rack just like it,so be careful what you post,ya just might be wrong. We all make statements that we are not sure about,me being one.5 Hail Mary's and you are forgiven.....floodman
I have two static tip recurves, a Morrison Cheyenne and a Sheepeater Spirit. Both of them are strung with a Selway cup and block type stringer. Never had a problem and always wonder what the hooplah is about stringing statics. Seems easy to me with this stringer.
Jerry, you are a better man than I. I wouldn't even think of tryin it on my 3 Dryads. No problem with my other bows. I would realy like to see your technique. I am never to old to learn new tricks.
Well if I ever saw someone push/pull one of our statics I'd take it away and never give it back.
Block and cup is the only safe way for the shooter and the bow IMHO.
Mike
Just my $.02 worth and I have only one static tip.
I initially tired stringing it with a cup-cup type stringer and saw the upper limb tip starting to twist sideways. I backed off immediate and I'm sure I was the bad guy - not lifting straight up. It scared me badly enough that I use only a cup and block stringer and (maybe because it scared me badly enough to be more careful) have had no more problems.
second the cup and block type as the only way to go. That's all I use on my Sovereigns
Thunderhorns bow stringers the best!!!
I use a tip to tip cup stringer on my Talons but the limbs are extremely stable horizontaly.
Having never strung the bow model you own I would reccomend a cup and block stringer for safety.
God bless, Steve
For twenty or so years I strung everything from a Bear recurve to a lemonwood long bow by hand and never twisted a limb. I guess I'm pretty dumb but I was unaware of any bow I couldn't string by hand. In the last two decades of course I was advised of the error of my ways and how lucky I had been to string bows these countless times without problems. Consequently, I converted to a cup and block stringer exclusively and sleep much better. My Dad laughed at me for using it but I have to agree it is in my opinion the safest way to protect your investment.
Where is the best location for the block on the limb?
right below where the string stretchs too before strung.
Mike
Got the selway recurve stringer and it seems like the cup portion is keeping me from pulling the bow back enough to get the string on.

Sometimes shortening the length of the stringer makes it easier.
- Black Widow
Blacktail
Morrison (2)
Big Jim Thunderchild

I've used a block style stringer I had with a previous bow and it worked fine. My double cup stringer works with the Kwyk Styk, but I wanted to make sure I was using the right one with a static tip bow since I've read on here that I dont want to twist a limb.
The Selway works fine on my Black Widow , Habus, and my brackenbury. I pulled so hard on my Kwyk Styk, I thought I was going to break it and the string never budged.
I know I've got lots to learn, but I've never had this much trouble stringing and unstringing a bow.

Same advice from Wingnut and it worked. Only shortened it about 2" but made a huge difference.
Have 2 Kempf static limb bows and only use the Selway block & cup stringer. No problems what-so-ever. Was using it on my Kwyk Styk and showed it to Jack when I picked up my Raven, he said he would be switching from cup-cup style.
Can someone post a few pictures on stringing a static recurve? Cannot find anything on the web. Thanks
Selway block & cup for my RER's and my non-statics as well.
2 static tips here. KS and RER XR.... Cup and block only.
Push pull isn't going to be happening with any of my recurves.
TaterHill Archer, are you putting both feet on the stringer?
Cup and block! Period! :knothead:
Selway recurve cup and block. I use it on my static no problems at all
I am pretty firm believer that with a Webster and a Selway one can string any bow out there...just gotta sort out which one works best with which bow...definitely the Selway with my RER recurve limbs and my Webster with the longbow limbs

Tip!!!!!!! I recently learned this and it works absolutely great. Take some rubber bands and put in your pack and bow box. Everytime you string your static. wrap a rubber band around the string and lower limb holding the string in the notches and in the groove on the limb/ Now string up normally with your cup and block stringer and you will not break or twist a limb . I do this every time I string a static or recurve of any type now and man it really is a great tip.
God bless you all, Steve
WAPITI ARCHERY ULTIMAYE BOWSTRINGER by Keith Chastain is made specifically for static or very sharp hooked recurves (like his recurves are). It works very well. I f you have two GOMPY stringers you can make one as well. The principle is the same.
98% of limb damage is caused by improper stringing and not checking limb alignment after stringing. Yes, you can twist a limb even with a bow stringer....
With one of these stringers I string my Sovereign Trident. Being a 60" bow makes it otherwise impossible for me to string it.
I use the "Thunderhorn stringer" with the rubber arrowhead on one end and a cup on the other. I got my first one 6 or 7 years ago when I bought a Rivers Edge Recurve (RER) Arroyo static tip recurve. I still use the Thunderhorn Stringer for my homemade recurves even though they are not "static"
Good tip on the rubber band for lower limb to hold string
The thunderhorn hugs the string nice and title these can be :scared: :scared:
Give these a look, they have a two block system and are easily adjusted for length. I can't see why this system wouldn't work.

Block and cup - one longbow specific and one recurve specific.
One foot on the stringer for the longbow. 2 feet in a shoulder-width stance on the stringer for the recurves.
Recently had this question on the bowyer's bench. Anyone have pics of using a stringer? Would love to see how they work and are made.
Thunderhorn and Selway.
I got sent a limbsaver rubber block and cup with my static tip by the bowyer. Works great, never had any issues stringing it.

Cup and block all the way. I have stepped thru in an emergency and if you are careful and strong it is fairly easy, but on in the absolute case you do not have a cup and block. Jacks statics are not real extreme like the borders or the caribow tuktu EX so not that hard to string. Shawn
Thanks for the link, Katman! What I needed.
