no pics but I know where there is some birdseye walnut lumber.  I've been thinking of buying a couple of boards and sending it to Black Widow for a set of limbs for my PSA V

Here are two different veneers I've used lately.

Dark Birdseye maple and Flaming Ambrosia Maple.

As you can see I like maple of all styles.

Troy, I think of using ambrosia maple soo often. Its amazing that the excrement of bugs can be so desirable. How did you fill the bug holes in the veneers?

Is there a place to buy nice veneers?  I would like to keep an eye out for some and buy it.  That way when I have my next bow built I can just send the veneers to the bowyer.  I love buetiful wood.  After all if you can't shoot good you can at least look good.

I used a redwood burl for the lam's in my widow.  Limbs look like they are on fire!  That is exactly what i am looking for - they were a great find.

Wow, I love hearing the good comments about redwood burl.  I just ordered a new longbow and had the bowyer use that veneer after seeing it in his shop.  Good choice I guess...

rmorris,

Filling holes in the Ambrosia Maple wasn't hard. The veneers are only .030 thick. When I applied the glue I just made sure I worked it alot more at the holds making sure I pushed it in the holes instead of swiping it just over the holes.

Then as I was ready to set the veneer on the stack I double checked both sides of the veneer to make sure the holes were full.

Pretty simple and no problem at all.

Once the limbs were out of the oven they only look like dark, dark grey to black dots.

Well that is easy, I was going to mix up some dark saw dust with smoth on and use a syringe to inject it into all the holes of the board , then cut and grind the veneers. Thank buddy as always you are awesome and a world of knowledge .

PA Mike, the curly red koa you are looking for really resembles good curly narra.  I personally like the narra better than the koa, it has better color.  The koa washes out a little under glass and the narra will look like a curly bomb went off.  LF

Not as spectacular as some of these combos, but I still get a bit of a thrill every time I pick up my RER LXR. Waterfall ash and cocobolo. Static tip recurve and longbow limbs are perfectly matched veneers from the same board.

I just got some more maple veneer.  Some quilted and some burl.  Stain makes this stuff look amazing.

I just picked up a HUGE amount of veneer for a woodworking project, I'm gonna have to piece together some of my leftovers into stuff for you guys.  Knew there was a reason I got that 1'x8'+ curly walnut veneer sheet...

You guys have given me lots of ideas.  Thank you!

Why do you cut down the center of the knot on those veneers? Makes it look like you have half to best part on each limb. Center the knot w/ the center of the veneer's width!

Not quite veneers yet, but will be in a few days. Walnut burl and Osage on the top billet, Walnut Burl and Curly Maple on the bottom. Still have a couple more billets to build, then it back to cutting and grinding.

These are kind of unique; This is one of the bows that Mike did not post. I finally found a pic of the veneers. Black myrtle. This looks like its on fire. Pic does not do it justice.

Double koa limbs, one fiddleback and one just crazy. Possibly the best veneers I have ever had. (http://eaglewingarchery.i8.com/images/chis%26bradley/100_5685.JPG)

They were. When I built that bow I had to sell two sets of those limbs off as seconds because of streaks in the glass that I could not detect. That really burned me. That was one beautiful and expensive piece of wood . I ended up with four sets of veneers that turned out good and two sets that I had to second.
Grrrrr. It always happens with the best stuff LOL.

God bless, Steve

I understand Curt but everyone of those wonderful veneers looks like you rip cut down the heart of the log. IMO, if the heart of the log was centered w/ the width of the limbs, you would get a more dramatic grain flow. In some cases, chevron like appearance. I can see that w/ the method you display, you get more from your material than just taking the heart out. The walnut bur veneers that Troy displays above is a great example. Butt those veneers together and cut out the center and then you a very dramatic limb veneer.

overbo,

The walnut part of those billets was not split down the middle by me to get the wood. That's the way I got it. I cut a 2" thick piece into two 1" pieces then layed them side by side. That's why it looks that way. With the price of some of these woods you have to get the most you can out of a piece rather than picking the best and scraping the rest. Getting one premium piece out of a $30.00 piece of wood and scraping the rest isn't cost effective when you can still have nice looking pieces by cutting it in half.

Just finished my latest run of spliced veneer billets. Waiting on a new batch of saw blades before I start cutting into veneers.

 (http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k632/arrowman2/DSCFnewsplice.jpg) (http://s1119.photobucket.com/user/arrowman2/media/DSCFnewsplice.jpg.html)

For William that just called. Here is the pics of the walnut and mango we were talking about. The first pic is the billet dry. The second is the billet after wetting with alcohol.

 (http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k632/arrowman2/DSCFdrysplice.jpg) (http://s1119.photobucket.com/user/arrowman2/media/DSCFdrysplice.jpg.html)

 (http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k632/arrowman2/DSCFwetsplice.jpg) (http://s1119.photobucket.com/user/arrowman2/media/DSCFwetsplice.jpg.html)

BTW overbo, the walnut in the picture I posted yesterday must not have been a problem for one customer. I just sold him a four piece set from both billets.

When you cut your own billets out of a large piece you can lay out and get one or two super premium sets. However we have to take what we can buy from the wood dealers. Over the last few years the wood market has changed and the wood suppliers have learned to contract with large musical and furniture manufactures and we get the left overs. That is a fact of life and hard to deal with.
The one super fancy piece of koa I have in stock is just enough to make a riser and some overlays. It cost me over 300.00. That is not thirty dollars but three hundred dollars. Its pay that or not get it.
I have worked hard to develop good sellers that will actually get me good wood as have many other bowyers but believe me when it comes to top grades it is hard to come by.
That super fancy koa with the crazy quilt was 600.00. I got 32 veneers out of it. I lost at least 8 in cutting and grinding. That comes to 100.00 per bow at my cost. Add a 300. riser and in just wood alone , not counting core, carbon. ect you have 400. in materials in a bow like that before you do any labor to it at all. That is just in wood alone. This adds a whole different perspective to the game.
BTW I jumped right on those mango veneers and they were all gone almost instantly. LOL.

God bless, Steve

Sixby,

That's why I'm doing my best to stick with alot of domestic woods. Those fancy exotic woods will get in your wallet fast. I do have to pick up a piece of exotic every now and then, but I try to stick to the ones that aren't so pricey.
