Title: St.Judes hog hunt 2012 (Pics)
Post by: frassettor on August 16, 2012, 06:04:00 PM
I was lucky enough to win a hog hunt at the Bacon Strip this year in the St.Judes auction.
Terry was hosting it, and to be honest you, I was in AWE at the amount of knowledge he has with these porkers.

Coming from Wisconsin, I am not used to the terrin, and the enviroment that the south has to offer. I went into this with high hopes, and let me be the first to say that i was not dissapointed.

I had a couple of stalks,The one resulted in a  shot that just missed high, and the other one was on one VERY smart red hog that not only caught me waiting for it to present a shot, but the little SOB told me what he thought of me at a mere 15-20 yards away.

My trip was cut short due to my daughters  medical needs that turned serious when I was there, so I had to get home and take care of things.

I appologige for the lack of photos, but the weather was rainy and I did not want to risk ruining the camera. I did manage to snap a few in camp.....

I look foward to returning to the Bacon strip in the future to wrap up some unfinished business i have  with that red hog...    :readit:

Yeah....it was a wild short ride.....both guys had to leave camp in less than 24 hours upon arriving....and Richard got THREE stalks, (don't forget about the round-a-bout donnybrook in the road with the buck 75 and the 150 that you just needed 10 more yards on), and John had one stalk on a nice boar....and about 40 hogs were seen by the two winners in less than a day.

Like I said, it was a wild short ride......but great memories in quick time.     :campfire:

For the short, wet hunt we had I had a grand old adventure. Rich, I am just gonna say that my prayers were answered and your daughter is on the mend. It weighed heavily on our minds and took away a lot of predatory intensity from my hunting. I dont have many pics as I was scared my wife would castrate me if I drowned another camera in the So Carolina rain. Missed a hog at about 25 yards after a  75 yard stalk which had me feeling that I had a slam dunk on my hands, well, I didnt.    :banghead:      :banghead:      :banghead:

Less than an hour after the shot, the swamp told Terry and I, the last remaining hunters in camp that our time was over. We'd split up in the bottoms to hunt different areas when the sun was suddenly blacked out of the sky. Double checking my watch I realized that we should have had another 2 hours of daylight. Just then I heard thunder in the distance along with lightning. Since it was bearing down in our direction, I made my  way to the trail to meet up with Terry.

Terry was on the trail right where I emerged from the hardwoods and we had a chat as to weather the storm would pass us or not. Well, it didnt. The rain steadily increased, rendering  our old growth, oak tree hideout useless against the rain. With zero chance of game movement and no possibility to bloodtrail, we headed back to camp.

About 75 yards into our retreat we both witnessed a bolt of lightning come down right in our path 75 yards or so in front of us approximately where we would have been if we hadnt taken a minute and ducked under the tree for shelter from the rain. It made the mile or so trek back to the truck interesting to say the least. The trail was rapidly filling with standing water, making us sitting ducks. We made it out without any more lightning and all I can say is that it was an interesting hike.

We spent the rest of the evening back at camp BSing, eating dinner, smoking stogies and having some cold drinks. We'd had enough, it had been an eventful weekend which had us worn out. After realizing how foul smelling we were from all of our wet clothes we decided to pack it in in the morning a day early. This was a weekend full of events that had me missing my family and I was ready to get back home.

Again Rich, it was a pleasure to hunt with you for as little time as we had and I hope we get to do it again somewhere along the trail.  And Terry, thanks for your gracious hosting, I hope to return the favor someday.

Thats my story and Im sticking to it.    :campfire:  (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0288.jpg)

Lastly, Michael (Sunny Hill Archer) came by for a visit and whipped us up a batch of "Frogmore Stew". Wow that was some good eating. A pleasure meeting Woods as well, you sure are raising him right.

Sounds like a good trip, even though it got cut short. Glad to hear the daughter is on the mend.

Love the camp set-up.

I know how much you were looking forward to this trip - so sorry to hear that it got cut short.  But also happy that your daughter is ok, and of course that is the important part.
Sounds like the hunting was good while you had it, and I know you will always remember and treasure what you had.
