Its coming folks, my neck is starting to swell and that smell of Autumn is in the air. I was fortunate to do a looooot of fishing this year but Im ready to get back in the woods.
Feel free use this thread to post pics of this years gear, trail cam pics, scouting photos, or just any scouting observations you want to share. If any bucks in the 130" class and above are located please discreetly pm me their gps coordinates and when your stands will be unoccupied.
Good luck to the folks still on the quest for #1 and it sure would be great to see your journey unfold here. :campfire:
Good luck everyone! I can feel it getting close, too. Already received my tags.
Yeah, the itch and mind wandering are in full effect!! Can't wait to get things started I was out this past weekend checking into a new spot. Stands are ready to go in the older proven spots. Good luck fellas!! Joe
Leaves are already changing here but due to stress. We got a good storm last night so hopefully that will help matters. Trees are producing better then the last time I went scouting. My buddies are still crying theres no deer guess will have to show them on the 1st!
It'll be different being able to hunt on Oct. 1. I guess the best strategie will be food sources. We don't have hardly any wild apples this year but I did find a cluster of three trees that are loaded. I'll be on them the afternoon of the first day. Good luck everyone!
Heading up to the ADKS sept 26for some early season action, then back home for the opener.Best of luck to all.Glen
Joem, What kind of limb wood is that striker bow made of in your photo?..Thanks...DH
Cannot wait. it seems as all I think about these days is being in the woods.
ill be using my 80# HH style howatt ml-10 with a 2317 filled with 2 gluesticks and tipped with 220 grn muzzy phantom heads coming up to around 740 grains , hopefully ill have enough power to push through whatever i can take a shot at
Eric, What are you hunting that you are worried about that setup being enough for?
haha it was meant to be read sarcastically lol the biggest thing i can worry ab is bears lol
Already started if you know a farmer with a nuisance permit.
Tim
deerhost, red elm veneers with bamboo cores. Nice bear!!! NY?

Joe, I am from Orange County which is the SE portion of the state. I asked because I have a Stinger STDL longBow which I got this year and I love it. I like it so much I'm going to order another from Rick. The one I have is cocobola riser and zebra facing on the limbs. I like the look of the elm. Maybe thats what I will order with maybe Bacote riser, Thanks again and good shooting to you.....Andre
acorns are a falling and i'm feeling a whole lot better about Set 27!
Hung 2 new stands pruned some lanes can't wait for the 1st
Watched a couple decent bucks sparring a little in a field the other morning. If THAT doesn't get you going......
OK-- here's a question. Just received my "Super Sportsman" License in the mail. In prior years, I have received both an "antlerless bow/muz" tag and an "either sex bow/muz" tag, plus a regular season buck tag and a DMP if drawn. This year, no "antlerless bow/muz tag". Anybody know why?
Just answered my own question. Called the DEC and there was a computer glitch on the first 2 days of license sales. They are correcting and will send along another tag to all who didn't get one. So, if you bought your license on last Monday or Tuesday online, look for the tag to arrive in a week or two.
The cool air this AM, shooting some 3-D in the woods this weekend, and now reading the threads on here has the pulse quickening.
:campfire: :archer:
huntryx, I didn't get one either. I was going to call DEC this morning. Thanks for the info. Fred
Thanks Susan........
The person I spoke to said to give it a couple of weeks and call again if nothing arrives.
S
Hmm, I received mine last week but didn't look it over too well. I better check when I get home. Thanks for the heads up Susan.
Not gonna let my guard down this opening day! I'll have an arrow nocked BEFORE I walk out the door... :dunno: ... In fact, this year I'll be hunting with woodies! Just don't tell Swampy. :p
*** Thanks for the information Susan. I'll check my tags when I get 'em. ***
... mike ...
got some nice pictures of does in my cornfields early am
Got out this afternoon with my boys.Hit the farm in Pittstown and we saw some good stuff but It was very dry still. A lot of the acorns were plump and healthy. Ran across another feral dog, theyre really driving us crazy but theres no catching them and I dont have the stomach for the alternative. Hopefully theyll move along.
Izzy , hope the new property is looking good.
Its driving me nuts, not being able to check my camera until sat.
It seems so long ago that I was out there missing and scaring every deer in the county. I pray that the good Lord continues creating a few deer that can be scared to death! javascript:void(0)
Had this little killer out with me yesterday, he's absolutely in love with the woods but they make him hungry. Poor feller was about to eat acorns. Ill remember a snack next time. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0441.jpg)
This years setups both well tuned. 60" 52# Griffin with footed woodies and Abowyer Antelopes or CX 45/70s with 180 grain SFs. The self bow is a Glenbo special, rawhide backed osage 50# @ 28" shooting stone pointed cedars or an MFX 600 with 125 grain Snuffers. Both are whisper quiet and dead on. Bring it on!!! (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0456.jpg)
Wetfeathers, I know that you may scare a few deer now and then, but you don't do much deer missing.
I was out scrambling to get some stands hung this week and ended up with some poison ivy all over my arms. You would think I should know better.I hope that you can get it done with the self bow Izzy.I also have a pair of some outstanding stone points given to me by a good friend that need to get used this year.
I've been shooting, practicing and preparing more for this season then any other in my 30+ years if hunting (mostly with wheels). Made a ghillie, camo'd my PAC seat, practicing now with broadheads. Also shot a lot of 3d courses this season, at least once a month. Was at OxTar last weekend. Tags came yesterday. Been out stumping and scouting bout 5 or 6 times already. I feel total confident in my equipment and ability out to 22 years. All I need is the opportunity to present itself. I hope!
Good luck to all! It's going to be a great season.
Good looking setups Izzy. I'm glad you got the boy out with you. How long before he can hunt? He looks ready!
Pete, it looks like all that practicing has paid off. You were shooting great at OxTAR!

Dragged my boys out this past Tuesday for one last scouting/fishin mission before school starts. We were up in The Moose River Plains Rec Area where I usually start my years hunting. Its one of them places that leave you with constant butterflies with every sight you take in.
We saw more turkeys than I have ever seen in the southern zone in a day, they were everywhere. Saw 2 doe and 2 fawns and a big old, brave coyote who stared us down only to walk off into a spruce bog before Noah could get the camera focused on him. No worries though, to see a big, old, Adirondack yote from 15 yards away is a primordial thrill. The boys and I thought so.
I located a pretty good looking funnel that I will hunt a time or two before southern zone. Now Im really pumped as if it wasnt bad enough already. A few pics for you all. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0537-1.jpg) (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0493-1.jpg) (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0514.jpg) (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0504.jpg) (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0533.jpg) (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0530-1.jpg)
Ill be heading back up solo in a couple weeks for some bear calling, no beech nuts to be found this year.
Outstanding! Looks like you guys had a good time. Thanks for sharing the pics :clapper:
Awesome Pictures Izzy!
Good luck to all in NY. After working so many years for a 10/1 opener, it finally arrives and I am in NC now. The season opens here this Sat., but I wish all of you luck.
Adkarcher
Awsome pictures Izzy,Great way to spend time with your boys. Thanks for sharing.Hope to see you this fall.
Great pics Izzy. Getting real close now, the boys are dropping velvet and the white oaks are dropping down here. Joe
Shoulder pain has developed-- getting a shot on Thursday--fingers crossed!
Good luck with that shot Susan. Sometimes they do wonders. I wasn't that lucky for my shoulder but it takes care of my knee everytime.
Yes, good luck Susan. I hope it works.
The last one worked for 3 months so I'm hopeful this one will get me through the season. Curse arthritis!
Called Buffalo Regional DEC office. There is as of now no youth gun hunt mid october but it is yet possible! Lol keep checking they said! What suspense this year! Who would have traded two extra weeks for 3the days of rifles in the woods? Sorry but not me! Don't get me wrong im all for a youth season of any sort but what's wrong with fri sat Sunday before a Monday opener??? Extended archery season in late December use to be a cold snowy experience rich in peaceful solitude ... now our primitive 2nd season is filled with scoped Savave muzzle loaders burning smokeless rifle powder out to distances that will make anyone say... WOW! I have to wonder at what price we are trying to hold the attention of the next generation of young hunters? Its hunting its suppose to be difficult and learned and earned with boot leather... for me the more challenging an accomplishment is the more euphoric its benchmarks become... ok ill stop! Back to the wood pile! :)
Great Pics Izzy, I can't wait either. good luck everyone!
Izzy, got a bunch of bears on the mountain right now, come on up, you bear hunt i'll small game hunt.
First rubs are popping up.

Wow, that is some beautiful country!! I hope I can make it up there for a hunt one day!
set my trail cameras out again saw 4 does in the lower field while glassing
Just got back home from the ADK's , spent a week there for family vacation. Could not believe the amount of turkeys we saw to and from the Saranac Lake area. No bear or Moose seen yet, someday maybe, early bear season starts today.
Yesterday while horse back riding, I not only saw some new heavy trails through some tall grass, I also saw a Rub on a Sumack tree the size of my leg. So I dismounted and moved my Camera. My camera had 19 pictures on it since the day before. I know 4 were from me riding past but I was too dumb to swap out SD cards to be able to view the pictures.
Saw the first scrapes this past weekend!! Its getting close!!
Youth firearm season just got confirmed for Columbus day weekend.
Wow... that's amazing!
Hoo-hoo cooler weather and things start popping! Shoulder is 95% better so (this is one word I believe) "lemmeatum" !!!
:archer2:
Glad to hear your shoulder is doing better, Susan. Don't over do it!
Thanks Ron I'll try to stay under control!
Susan :wavey: Maybe if your shoulder flares you can spend time with the pups :campfire: I am glad you are feeling better.
Fall is here! Leaves are looking beautiful and the cool weather is really getting me pumped. Acorns are EVERYWHERE! Good luck to the guys up North hope you fill your tags. Ill be out Monday hopefully ill have a pic to share :)

Found this while stumping/selecting stand sites Saturday. If something like THIS doesn't get you in the mood...
The omens are bad so far. Last month I checked on my stand and - dummy I am after leaving it out all off-season - I climbed up and found the seat half gone and a woodrat (second one I've ever seen - think Giant fieldmouse) shot out of a massive nest that had been my seat. As I was removing the stand I noticed I was covered in ants. They had filled the cross channels with eggs and more ants. Good news, I guess, is that I discovered this BEFORE I had two pant-legs full of ants on opening day. I soaked the stand in a stream overnight to drown them.
New seat is old fire-hose. That ought to hold up! Was a cast iron b!+c# to attach to the seat frame.
This morning I took a practice shot before work and the nock failed. I have a 3" blood blister to remind me why bracers are still a good idea. Tore the nock point off in my skin and had to repace that - good excuse to get back on the horse; so to speak. I guess I'd rather hit my arm than split a bow tip.
Hoping I've paid my dues. Won't be able to get out until Oct 7th. I've seen does and yearlings a-plenty but no velvet or antlers as yet.
Still totally green down here in the lower southern zone. I'm packed and ready to go for 10/6. Cool mornings, warmer afternoons. I hope things change big time over the next 9 days. Kinda wish the additional 2 weeks add to the season was at the end.
PeteA.....2 weeks at the end?????? We are lucky they didn't shorten the season by 2 weeks. Did I say that out loud........
Yeah I would have preferred a longer late season to this, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Leaves are turning here and we've already had a few of those gorgeous 60-degree days I wish would last forever, or until I get out of work, whichever comes first.......
Good luck my friends.
I will be waiting until October sometime....life is demanding my full attention, but I have managed to sneak out and shoot a few times.
I wish you all a safe, successful hunting season. :archer:
For those who hunt up North and are going out in the AM.....best of luck ....and pick a spot!! :archer2:
I most likely won't be able to get out until Saturday. Maybe a chance for an hour or two Friday afternoon. Good luck everyone!
It's almost here. :archer2: Good Luck guys
I know izzy said 130 or better but these have got me pumped. especially since they are out during the day.

Couple of nice ones there Charlie!! Good luck shoot straight
Charlie, I see that you have your deer all picked out. It is hard sitting here at work when the season has started!
I'm with Jamie. Extremely busy and still way to warm to prevent meat spoilage. I'll be lucky to get out before Thanksgiving.
Tim
Nice deer Charlie, all of them. Im sure they arent Dacks deer though, the region is supposed to be absolutely devoid of them. Work and baseball are killing me right now but should level out soon. Not only is this hunting season, its also training season. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Whats the mid day report guys? Any sightings or arrows loosed?
Did a 4 hour sit this AM.....only company I had was a small wren shared the blind with me for about an hour....lol! Beautiful mourning even as slow as it was. Great sunrise.........
Good luck to all you huntin fellars tomorrow.
Wet and real silent in the forest this mourning, never saw the rest of the crew ,stayed till it started raining again and then went back to the truck. No sign of life today for me!
Manny saw 2 very early.
Cool Ken. Keep us posted!
ok, Manny also saw a heavy bodied 6 point at 50 yards!
Manny, I know you could have made that shot< isaw you shootin at Denton.
awesome! I had a package at my door from manny today, I was almost in trouble with my wife until I told her I didnt spend any money.
Stand is hung and ground blind made.
Hopefully Manny will get another, closer look at him tomorrow. Good luck gentlemen!!!
Almost Sunday lol. Im shooting great and im ready to get me a deer opening day. Me and my cousin will be hitting our familiar stomping grounds behind my house.
Hope I can "Get-It-Right" on Monday! Been at it long enough... :archer2: ...

Season opens tomorrow but it is too warm for me, I need a chill in the air to be comfortable.
What the heck did you do to your back, Ken??? I hope it gets better soon. Very soon!
I just got back from a quick morning hunt in the Klondike Forest. A quick WET hunt. I guess it was more of a walk thru the woods. Will try again tomorrow after work.
Close encounter with the old does twice now,man they are sharp senses,no good shot presentation,MAN how I Love this stuff.Gobblers are waiting patiently for me too.
Sad to hear that your back is still hurting bad Ken!
What a day yesterday was, what a hunt!
Saw 2 tails early morning, a doe and a fawn, way too dark to shoot. Rain was light but steady.
After the watch, we had a small breakfast and Ken showed me an area where I could see deer behind Mother's house. I marked Mom's house in the GPS and went back there. I set up on the side of an old rocky fence because I heard movement there. After an hour there, a grey shadow caught my eye on the my right. At about 100 yards, this buck was walking to me, feeding and walking slowly. I was in the open but managed to nock an arra. I was still as a rock, my eyes almost closed. In about 15 minutes that seemed hours, he closed to about 50 yards to me, changed direction and went up hill, still feeding not knowing I was there.
No shot, but what a rush! What a day!
F-Manny
I couldn't stay to hunt today because of work, I hope Ken will get a shot at this buck, a great one!

Hoping to get out on Wednesday but I have 2 days off the following week so I'll definitely be out there then..good luck all..
Sorry I missed you Manny, went to the ground blind to see you but you had moved. We'll hook up again I'm sure! Take care!!
Good luck to you all that will be going tomorrow morning, I will be going . Found a nice 17'' 8 pt. buck hit by a car this morning on the way to church with my family. Makes me sick , he would have been real nice to take with a bow.
I know right where that tree is Manny, Spent losts of time up there behind Mom's house last year with my flintlock, when I was up there for 9 days during the ML season. Lots of deer, and good buck sign. Maybe Kenny will get a whack at him if he spends any time back there!!!
Well my friends, I've got Tyler all ready to go!!! We're spending today making last minute preparations, tomorrow morning we will be in the sacred "stone circle". Hopefully, our medicine is good, and the Great One will shine upon us!!! Either way, it's Tyler's 1st Opening Day... and it WILL be a "good day"!!!!!
I had him out shooting today. He shot for about an hour, and almost all of his arrows were right in the "kill zone" from 10-25 yards, and at differant angles. He missed the deer target twice, and 3 "bad hits" (1 gut, 1 neck, 1 leg) All I told him was to take a minute and "regroup"... Then when he was ready, I just told him to pick a spot, and focus... He was right back in there again!!!!!
Good Luck, My Friends and Brothers!!!!! May the Great Spirit Guide Your Arrows.....
Shoot straight guys. Best of luck to everyone. Let the games begin. :archer2:
Hope to see some hero pics.
Looking forward to seeing you Ron!
Good luck Chuck and Tyler, a first opening is a very special day!
F-Manny
Very cool Manny!! Best of luck and I'll see you soon.
Ken hope your back feels better soon (13th!!), Ron is right, gettin old is hell...just ask my back!
Chuck, hopefully this is gonna be the year for us to hit the hudson valley at least once together. Look to the 13th!
Jeez Charlie, I thought for sure you were gonna say Manny gave you that little old leclair paring knife he carries ;)
See you all soon brothers,
Nathan

F-Manny

Good Luck to all my NY friends!
Be safe.
......Philip
Leaving for the woods in a few minutes, shoot well gentlemen (and ladies).
Im stuck at work......I wanna hear some stories and see some pics!!! :campfire: :coffee:
Patiently waiting...
Working too. The rain forecast scared me so I cancelled my day off! :banghead:
Was a great morning, the weather was perfect. No deer killed but spooked a few going in and comming out. Nice to be out there again, p.s. the red oaks are loaded with acorns this year.
Beautiful morning. No shots but I spooked 5 does, flushed 3 grouse and 2 rabbits. Mowing the lawn then heading back out to spook some more.
Today is oct. ist and I'm at work. I'm ready to hit the woods friday afternoon.Looking forward to finding another 16 in. wide buck, thats about as good as it gets in my area. Honestly though its really how I get them more than what I get that makes them a throphy. Love my Deer huntin. Best of luck to all my fellow NY hunters,be safe and have a great time-I plan ttttttto.
Well the game is on! Good luck to all. I'm on the bench until Saturday.
:campfire:
Well Chuck, glad you are up and at em. Good luck to you and Tyler. maybe I will see ya on the 13th?
Went out for a 3 hour sit this afternoon when the weather broke. Real windy out of the west....kept swirling , so it was hard to set up. Sat and didn't see anything today.
Got stuck at work til 16:15 but decided to give it a whirl anyway. Didnt have a good feeling as thats when Ive been seeing the deer come through the creek bottom to my stand. On the way in I got within 12 yards of a longbeard til he spooked and flew up into a tree with a bad back drop.
Was buckled into my tree by 16:45 and finally saw 4 slickheads at 18:00. They must have smelled me but couldnt pin point me. The biggest one came into 6 yards and as soon as she turned away giving me a perfect broadside shot I started to draw but she heard me in that windless creek bottom and bounced away. Oh well, its early and it was an awesome hunt. Im starting to love hunting the "Ghetto" more and more even though the deer there are spooky and expecting human contact everytime they leave their beds. Anyway, I've got their number now, if only theyll forget mine. :dunno:
Well I got out early and spent some time up at my Dads . I had a four piont at 30 yds going in then a spike that passed at 15 yds and a buton buck at twenty . I could have shot two of these but held offas we are trying to take six point or better but it was fun.
Well, Tyler & I were in the woods alittle after 6am. We sat in the sacred "stone circle" where I shot a spikehorn a few years back, and have missed many more over the years.....
We didn't see anything but a few VERY uncooperative tree rats this morning!!! About 9:30, I started to notice that Tyler was getting cold. (He trys to be like his old man, but seems to forget that I work outdoors 365 days a year) We headed out, got coffee and egg samiches to refuel, then headed home for some insulated pants and a wool sweater for Tyler. Then, we headed back down to the cemetary.
Tyler wanted to walk up some squirrels (???) so, I looked at it as an opportunity for him to practice his stillhunting skills, and check out the property to get his bearings. We stillhunted the entire perimiter of the cemetary property, seeing a few more uncooperative squirrels, coming out right next to my ladder stand. It was just a short walk to the stone circle, and about noon, so I decided alittle "stump shooting" practice was in order.....
Well, THAT was a mistake!!!!! The first target I picked for Tyler was about a 22 yarder... We both drew our judos... Tyler's arrow was gone before I even hit my anchor. 1 dead Pepsi can!!!!! I just let my string down and said, "I might as well put mine away!!!" We saw something shiney about 30 yards and I said "shoot that Tyler"... He let fly, and his arrow hit just about an inch above!!! Tyler went to get his arrow and said "Jeez Dad, That's a HUBCAP!!! (from my uncle's old 40something Plymouth I think) I just laughed and said, "Yeah well you missed it!!!" To which Tyler replied... "YEAH, It's a good thing too! It would have messed up my Judo!!!"
We climbed into the "stone circle" for our evening sit, it was about 1pm. We saw a few more squirrels, but none would give him a shot. We sat untill about 5;30. I would have liked to have sat longer, but I had to get him fed and home to his Mom. It was a long day for my little Penobscot Warrior.....
We did not see any deer, But... On the way out, I looked to the sky, and I thanked The Great One for a VERY, VERY, "Good Day"
Atha boy Drew, Sounds like you have some Bucks to sort threw. Best of luck to you.
Got up just at sunrise Monday morning... Looked out the front window and was able to make out the shape of a few deer in the field, nice... Got my gear together and looked out again to find five does feeding toward the front porch at 50 yards or less... Hurry down stairs and fight that darn door knob and out I go...
But, wait... They need to go around the house, from what side? Can't hear 'em now, ground is nice and wet... Bet-cha they'll sneak by 3D #7... I'll get in there.......... :banghead:
That was all the action that day... Try again soon.
... mike ...
Mike, Drew, Chuck and Tyler, sounds like Great days had in the field. Thats awesome.
Chuck, these are times you and Tyler will never forget. :clapper:
With that many sightings; it's just a matter of time. Good luck to all.
Wow, great hunts right there!
Drew that is amazing
F-Manny
Saw 2 does come by at 50 yards at first light. Really great to be back out hunting.
(http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/DSC02909_2_zpsf18ec598.jpg)I jumped this guy in a goldenrod field and when he stopped to look back..... he died. Great evening for still hunting.
Good job, will make some fine eating....
Congrats Michael. I knew a deer would die today. conditions were too good this morning. I even told someone a string would get dropped today, I was beginning to wonder if I'd eat my words.
Thanks for coming through!
Congrats on the nice deer.
Congrats WF, great pic and a fine deer.
Nice work wetfeathers! :clapper:
Good eatin' right there. The boys sure look happy, too!
Weather today is really crappy, fog rain and misty, got my chores done and had some lunch....I'm off. Going to take the Silvertip for a walk on the State Land to still hunt and scout a bit at the same time. Just some sneak and peek.......It should be silent under foot.....lol!
Good luck Ron!
sometimes those are the best days afield Ron...good luck
All silent in the woods this afternoon, found some really good sign, worth an early mourning trip in the near future. The colors are really coming on and leaves are falling from the canopy. It got real warm and the mosquitoes were out in force!
I just got in from my first Southern zone hunt this evening.I sat for the last two hours,as I get home around 4:30.The only game spotted were seven turkeys around fifty yards out.I hunted Thursday to Saturday in the Northern zone.Four sits and one doe spotted. It is nice to have these early days.Once the time change occurs I am limited to weekends.Good luck to all
Went down to hunt yesterday and found that some P.O.S. had sliced the ratchet strap on my ladder stand!!!!! I guess the Great One was looking out for us, as I was going to put Tyler up into it opening day, but he wanted to hunt from the the stone cicle.
This individule does not have permission to hunt the ptoperty, and sneaks in through a small piece of land boardering the cemetary. Last season,I had seen his truck parked on a dead end side road, and we found his climbing stand at the base of a tree about 50 yards from my stand. My friend, (a cop) wanted to "confiscate it"... But I talked him out of it. My reasoning was, if you stood where his climber was, and looked toward my ladder stand... You could BARELY make out the sides of the ladder, and we were LOOKING for it. I thought it was pretty brazen to put his stand that close, but I chalked it up to a dumb mistake!!!
Opening day of gun season, I heard him take 1 shot from the stand. I waited about 10 minutes to see if anything would come my way, then headed down to see what he got. Well, apparently he had missed. There was a 12ga shell case at the base of the tree, and a scent rag hanging in a bush. Both him and the climber were gone!!! Apparently he figured he better "git gone,or git caught" and had beat feet outa there... We didn't see any sign of him for the rest of the season.....
What really ticks me off is, why do people sneak into a spot to hunt, then they want the place all to themselves??? It doesn't matter to them if someone gets hurt... "If he's hurt, he can't hunt" seems to be the mentality!!! What if I HAD put my son in that stand??? :scared:
The really SAD thing is, although there are only a few of us that hunt there, EVERYONE who has asked was given permission to hunt!!!!! We all have each others cell #'s and keep each other posted when and where we will be hunting. It's also nice to know you have help if needed to track or DRAG a deer!!!
I bought a couple sets of ratchet straps and will secure the stand this week. However... I honestly can't say what I'll do if I find his climber at the base of a tree this season.....
Chuck,
Shake it off. remove his stand and pin a note on his tree that he can find it with your cop friend. my guess is that you will get a new stand and never see the guy again. i'm glad no one was hurt.
Well I'm off to a slow start in my neck of the woods. I was only able to get out tuesday morning and the only deer I saw was the one I jumped on my way to my stand. I hope the weather cools down some cuz all the rain and warm temps are killin me.
woodchucker, same thing happenned to me but on regular hang on stands. They even stuck the strap into the stand to make it look like it was not cut. I guess they hoped i would step into the stand and it wobble loose and I fall and break my neck. All this for a hunting spot. Simply tragic that another hunter would want someone to lose his life or get paralyzed.
That's bad business fellas. Id get sadistic if someone tried to do me like that. I always worry about that when my stands are left out for long.
I had a pretty heavy strap on a ladder stand cut almost all the way through a few years ago. I noticed it while climbing up. I always wondered how it was cut. It was on private property where I was the only one with permission to hunt. I hated to think someone would intentionally do that.
A few years prior to that, on the same property, I had my strap-on stand and climbing sticks stolen. I wrote in a hunting forum for the local newspaper about it and that I had a trail cam set up and got pics of the person taking it. I said that I was going to Wal-Mart to have the pics printed. Well, the next morning that stand, the sticks and the strap were neatly placed under the tree. I guess the guy saw my post. Oh, I didn't have a trail cam, but my ploy worked.
Now THAT's FUNNY right there!!!!!
It is funny now, Chuck :biglaugh:
But at the time, I was searching the trees on opening morning with my "pre-LED" dim little flashlight with no luck. Once it got light enough to see, I realized I was at the right spot, just no sticks or tree stand. It let it pretty much ruin my hunt for that morning. I thought that hunting from a tree stand was the only way to go back then. Now I hardly get up in them!
Well, The woodchucker SCORED AGAIN today!!!!!
(but not on a deer...)
I went down to the cemetary today and resecured my ladder stand with a new ratchet strap that I bought. Then, I sat in it for about 2 hours untill it started to rain. I headed out, put my stuff in the truck, and headed home.
On the way home, I pass right by the GoodWill store.....
(Most of my friends here know how much I LOVE shopping at GoodWill!!!)
So, I pulled in.....
As I was scanning the racks for wool sweaters and such, something caght my eye..... It was Red... and Black... and VERY heavy... and there was a gentleman standing RIGHT in front of it!!! Soon, he moved on, and around to the other side of the rack. I carefully and slowly made my way over to the rack. 1 by 1, I stalked my way toward my target... THEN I STRUCK!!!!! As quickly as my Brother Hawk, I swooped down and snatched my prey.....
It was a brand new, size 46, (just right for Tyler) Red&Black Plaid, insulated Woolrich Mackinaw!!!!! I looked and looked, but try as I might... I just couldn't find a price on it. So, I took it to the cash register anyway. (after all, this is the GoodWill store. How much could it possibly cost???)
I asked the girl at the register, "Do you know how much this costs??? I can't find a price on it"
$8.50 she says!!!!! SOLD!!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl:
Once again..... Woodchucker one heap happy Indian!!!!!
A very succesful evening, Chuck :clapper:
I finally got some time off from work. I'll be in the woods in the morning. Its been driving me nuts reading all the posts on here and not hunting myself. Good luck to everyone tomorrow.
I heard blood has been shed. must get details yet hopefully the rightful party will post up!
Nice find Chuck!!!!

Charlie,if it's who I'm thinking of,he's shed blood twice already. We thinkin' of the same guy?
sorry fella's I had jumped the string.
I got excited off presumptive info from a friend. Would have been a great morning to be in the woods.
Well, our own Skipmaster1 has taken 2 does.Maybe he'll be along to post about it.
Had a good afternoon even with the clouds of skeeters around my head-Nice plump 4pt got to ride home with me! :archer:
  Well done Terry!!
Congrats!!!!! I was going out this morning but it is pouring. Maybe it will let up later...
My buddy Tony Z took a nice 8 with my old widow on Wed. evening. I've only been out twice, had to cut one of those days short with a hellatiouse thunderstorm!
Hey Woodchucker haven't seen you in awhile, I'll shoot you a PM in a bit.
Congrats Terry! :smileystooges:
That Greg sure has a big freezer. I am surprised he only has 2 so far. Congrats Greg!
Sean, Tell Tony Congrats for me. I am on my way to shoot some new arrows in a bit, just wanted to make sure they flew straight, there for I skipped this beautiful morning.
Congratulations Terry!!!!
Only hunting I did today was in my mind... :( ... Not a bad day dream with a paint brush in hand 'stead of my Kanati... Guess I'll go shoot some broadheads in the back yard before we take the Scotties to church for a "Pet Blessing"... :dunno: ... I'll keep my shooting glove in my pocket... Kinda get that blessed too... ;) Gonna need it.
... mike ...
Yea Charley that buck probably was thinking nobody could hurt anything with that piece of firewood (he was hit by lightning shortly after-R.I.P.)
Way to go Terry!!! :clapper:
Took an 18 yard shot with a 175 grain woodsmen. (//%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/biggamefish/IMG_20121006_165045.jpg)[/IMG]

I can't get the pic to come up on the page. So I just gave you a link.
Nice shot Biggamefish! congrats! :clapper:
I saw two small bucks a little while ago. A little to far out (35 yards), but a pretty exciting time watching them. Had to get back home to take care of family obligations, but it was a worthwile walk in the woods!
Had a pretty good morning.
Congrats Mathew!
Great experience Ron. get back at em.
JIM.... sump in tells me you have more... :coffee: :goldtooth:
I had a pretty quiet morning in the woods. saw a bobcat om the way to the farm. crossed about 30 yards in front of my truck. I had a chickadee on my bow pecking at my yarn puff. I heard a few sticks break in the distance that were curious but alas, no deer sighted.
Going to take care of the horses and then go back out. its one of those days where you should be in the woods.
What happened,Jim? I gots to know! :goldtooth:
Had a little doe give me a "slam dunk,no brainer" shot this morning.....
Yup fellers, you guessed it... The woodchucker blew it!!!!!
4 yards from the base of my stand, she looked up and caught me moving!!!!!
I did the same darn thing, in almost EXACTLY the same spot, that I did last year, when I missed that 3 point buck!!!!!!!!!! :banghead:
I was stting down, so instead of trying to turn my body, I spread my knees and tried to shoot with my bow between them... At half draw, she looked me right in the eye, and the jig was up!!!!! She never really spooked though. Tried to wind me, but couldn't. Then she trotted off into the thick stuff, and hung around for about a half hour before feeding her way out of sight. Well, that's Ok... It's a long season. She'll be back!!! (maybe Tyler will get a whack at her)
Well done Terry!
I should be in the woods instead of writing a financial report
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
At least I will be hunting with my brothers soon!

Awesome very nice buck!! Deer are going crazy up here in the Oaks. That 8pt I saw first day was spotted by my Cousin this morning. Things are getting good the scrapes and rubs im finding are very encouraging!
Well done Jim......
Way 2 go Jim. the body looks big on him. BTW hes sticking his tongue out at me.
Great deer.
Looking forward to seeing you again MannY!
My afternoon hunt was quiet. I had a flock of turkeys making a racket and finally roosting about 60 yards. I always forget too throw the calls in. Not that it would have done any good in this case but I always remember to forget the dang calls. lol
congrats!
Congratulations Stone Knife! That's a good looking buck!

Great picture Jim. Congratulations. Nice shooting.
Congrats Jim!!
Good Looking Buck!!CONGRATS!!BIG HEAD>RED CAP.
Great buck. Nice job.
Jim glad to see the Bob a Lee made meat !
Spent some time in the Bow only area near Albany today. Sat for the mourning in a ground blind on a friends family farm. Saw a few squirrels, not much activity at all. Have not seen a deer yet.
I had a decent hunt. Saw a buck that took off who was working a scrape. Got in my stand and was there about 15mins when a doe worked her way in. She got about 18-20yds and veered to her right I got to full draw but between trees and her trotting speed I passed the shot. Having alot of "almost" oppertunitys but man I wanna get one!
Had a bear stroll by my ground blind this morning. Not real big around 150lbs.To bad there is not a season for them where I hunt.Been seeing alot of bear sign, now I got to see the bear.It was cool.Been seeing deer but no shots yet.Been hunting on the ground. Can,t believe the deer I have been seeing.should of tried this ground game sooner.Learn something new each time out.hopefully I can make it happen...................
Had a doe with 2 fawns under the stand tonight but didn't want to make orphans of the little ones.Lots of time left.
Just WHERE in NY do you live where the Bear Season is NOT open, Tim?????
Last year they opened most all of the darn State!!!
There is no Bear season in the center of the state, for any weapon!
Southern Herkimer county,no open season....
Albany???
Dolgeville ........
Hmmmm... I'll have to double check my map!!!
Thanks Guys!!!!!
OOPS!!!!! Sent that before Tim's reply...
Yeah, no season in Dolgeville. Need to get north of route 29. When I lived there - In Salisbury Ctr, my grandmother lived right on the line, halfway between Dolgeville and Salisbury. Behind her house was NZ, across the road where we hunted as well was SZ. But no bear season across the road on the SZ, even with the recent expansion.
Tomorrow we try the Shaggie long coat in a field of golden rod. Made at hat today to match from a old boonie and some burlap......gonna get up close and personal!! Saw some sign there so we shall see.
Good luck Ron
Well brothers, I had one of the best weekends without ever coming to full draw. Saw a total of 35 deer and 2 fisher traveling together! Cool as heck!!! Belly crawled into 20 yds on a 6pter and a doe at 2 diff times and put on 3 other stalks that got me from 20 to 12 yds. just AWESOME!! never pulled back but it was absolutely fantastic. Also had a few spikes directly under my stand at two diff times. Love that ghillie suit!!!
Good luck all!!
Nathan
Sounds like an awesome time Nathan  I got blood on the knife again Bro. never head to the woods with out it.
That is just great Jim, I cant tell you how happy i am to hear that!!! (Smiling ear to ear)
Thanks and good luck,
Nathan
Good news - Bad news.....LOL!! Went this mourning and set up with a good wind in a spot where I have seen a few deer before. Had on my new to me Shaggie long coat and hat seated on my Pac-seat. At 7:15 I looked to my left , when I looked back a doe had stepped into my shooting window, broadside at 12 yards. Where she came from I have no idea. She looked like a 3-D target standing there, I looked down at my Silvertip laying in my lap....can't move. At times it seems like she was looking behind me at something but she never spooked or stomped. She just fed back the way she came and got together with another doe. I think the shaggie coat works for one thing....I now have cut a porthole in the brush to see deer coming, and I also put a spot right across from this one if the wind is from the west. I saw 2 deer, that's half way to my annual average and it's early yet :biglaugh:
Good stuff Nate.
Ron, glad your heart rate was elevated. Thats awesome!
Had a deer at 10 ft first thing this morning, couldnt tell what it was, too dark. that was it.
Ron, I told you, each time out makes it closer to the desired end result-patience grasshopper!
  Nathan!
Can't wait to meet with the Crew again
F-Manny
Ron, cool hunt :)
F-Manny
It was fun Manny, I think not seeing deer very often makes you not expect to see them....and them wham, there they are...LOL!
Not seeing them will make you let your guard down for sure.
How many times have you walked away from a fishing pole......
keep the stories coming...
I was in my stand at 3pm as the Weatherman said it was going to rain at 5pm due to a cold front moving in. I figured the deer would be hitting the acorns in this spot but no luck. Seen a ton of squirrels but then again I wasnt in my prime early season stand. If the wind is right im gonna hunt low in the swamp maybe I can stir something up!
Been hunting the ground again this year, and love it. Sat near some red oaks and had deer within 30 yards of me for 2 hours solid and never got spotted or smelled. 2 bucks and 2 does, one was a big 7 point with a freaky right side. wearing a ASAT leafy suit, lots of fun, no shots yet.
I'm going to do some ground hunting also, always a blast.
My brother has never bow hunted for Deer, but has desided to since I built him a hickory self bow last christmass. We're going out Saterday to see what we can do. Hunting from the ground[ no blind]using blow downs for cover. Found were a young buck is scraping and rubbing.A blow down within range of this activity should hopfully see some action. Would love to see him tag one. I'll be more excided than he will if he gets one.
Took a bow hike in the big woods today up near Wells N.Y. Went in a couple of miles, looked around ,sat for a bit and then hiked/ stumped my way out. Saw a bit of deer sign, still a lot of foliage on. It was cool....35 degrees when I got there and 36 when I left 4 hours later.....a bit of rain also. There is nothing like that country to revitalize your spirit!
Good luck to you and your brother David!
Hey Ron, I am heading over near Wells this week-end. Actually about 12 miles south of there in Benson. I need my spirit revitalized in the mountains :bigsmyl:
Benson.....that's in my backyard....well almost...LOL!
I decided to check my trail cam. threw the bow in just in case. I had been bothered at the lack of deer for the past 2 weeks. I wont hunt there again for another week and then will give it another weeks rest while I am hunting in WI.
I saw a huge group of deer, I estimated about 8 in total. I hunkered in the bushes and sat till dark but they were content out in the alfalfa field. checking my sd card tonight.
Has anyone else noticed oak trees that were dropping like crazy 3 weeks ago and getting hit good by deer are now all dried up? that seems to be the case on this particular property.
Made it out for the first time today. Had to go between bus stop times so I decided to still hunt/scout.
Sign was very promising. I ended up seeing 8 does, two bucks and three grouse. I was close enough for two shots, but never put tension on the string.
I was hoping for a turkey, :)
I know we've kinda talked about it in passing on here, but anyone whos around sat or sun and wants to hunt stewart with us is welcome. It should be "memorable" for sure, cant elaborate more on here what that might mean! :archer:
Nathan
Oh yeah, spray down with lots of permethrin products now!!!
Gonna hit the road soon and head up to my place in The Catskills... Hope to have some action this afternoon in the heavy pines... :archer2:
... mike ...
I was sitting in some oaks this week and it sounded like rain thenin another spot nothing in the trees at all . I think some trees produced good and some didn't at all. Hopefully this weekend will be a buck weekend.
Good luck up there Mike!
Thanks Ron P, Best of luck to you too my friend
I cantwait for 9:30 pm! see you soon Manny.
Looking forward to hunting Stewart again, its been about 6 years since I hunted there.
See you boys SOON!!!!! :bigsmyl:
:campfire: :archer: :archer:
Awesome evening. Saw 6 does and 3 bucks. I had 3 does all within 20 yds at the same time while leaning against a 5" maple! I couldn't move! Then Big Momma winded me and informed everything within 500 yds of my presence. I need to let that spot cool down for a week or so. Headed to State land tomorrow a.m. before I go back to work.
Had a close encounter last evening, had a doe come in stood broadside around 22yrd.I pulled up ever so slow and drew on her.I didn,t release, something was,nt right. When she strolled out of range I stared at that spot where she stood and saw why I didn,t shoot.wire size branches hanging down in front of the zone. But when she offered the shot,I looked right through them.Glad I held off.Had two spikes come through this morning no shot though mighty cold.this ground game is real fun.Just hope I can score.
Weather may a problem in the AM :dunno:
Yup it's raining...
Its supposed to be dry this afternoon. At least in my area. I'm going out and hopefully meet up with this guy. I checked my camera on the way out of the woods yesterday and had this pic.

Going with my best friend after work for our 1st trad hunt together. Last year was his 1st year with stickbows but life prevented us from getting out together. We'll be hunting rensselaer co.
Going with my best friend after work for our 1st trad hunt together. Last year was his 1st year with stickbows but life prevented us from getting out together. We'll be hunting rensselaer co.
pouring here right now but i'm heading out to scout, move a stand and stump shoot!
Well, The Boys have gone... They have long drives ahead of them.
First and foremost, I would like to thank them for coming to share thier time with Tyler and I!!! Tyler was "absorbed" right into the "Gang" and had the time of his life!!!!! He feels 10 feet tall right now!!! These men, VERY Dear friends of mine, are my Brothers. They took Tyler under thier wing, and did everything they could possibly do, to make it a very special time for him!!! We are VERY Blessed to have these fine men in our lives, and I am a VERY LUCKY man, to have these men of such high caliber, as my Friends!!!!!
The Gang got here friday night around midnight, and it was like a "family reunion"... Tyler was introduced to everyone and they were instant friends! Charlie brought Tyler a green&black Woolrich shirt, and a wool sweater. Also, Manny presented Tyler with a BEAUTIFUL, M.L. knife, That Tyler absolutely loved!!!!! (the next day Tyler told me that he was AMAZED that Manny gave him such a beautiful knife!!! I explained to him, that it is "good luck" on both ends, to give someone a knife) Beer and laughs, along with hunting plans, lasted untill 2am... Then it was off to bed.
Saturday morning was clear and cold... (FROSTY was more like it!) The plan was to hit Stewart Airport by 6am,so we would not be able to sample Nathan's wonderful cooking untill later. Well that didn't happen. When we got there, they had already opened the gate and we had alittle difficulty finding a parking spot. We found 2 close spots by a few standing corn fields. The plan was to hunt the field edges untill about noon, then "regroup"... None of us saw deer that morning, but it was a wonderful morning anyway. Tyler and I met Manny and Charlie back at the truck around 11:30, while Nathan and Drew were still hunting... (napping?) A "Squirrel Stalk" for Tyler, turned into a stump shoot!!! LMAO (isn't that always the way? us traditional bowhunters, just HAVE to shoot at something!) When Nathan and Drew met us back at the truck, plans were made to get lunch and head for another piece of property that Nathan said was "crawling with deer"!!! Well, he wasn't kidding!!!!! We parked the trucks and split up. Tyler and I headed up the mountain. By the time we got 1/2 way up, Tyler was getting one of his Migraine headaches. I set him at the base of a tree, with instructions to just close his eyes and try to relax. I headed over to a fallen White Oak that made an almost perfect ground blind, on the edge of a bench. Tyler was soon sleeping, and the squirrels were apparently concerned that he was no longer a threat... He even had 1 climbing onto and over his legs!!! LOL About 5:30 I caught movement... 2 big does, and 3 little ones, came up the mountain and onto the bench. I could not get a clear shot, so after they moved on up the mountain, I quietly hustled over to get Tyler. "Wake up Buddy, The deer are on the move!" Tyler woke up and his headache was RAGING!!! Still, he quietly hustled over to the deadfall blind and never complained!!!!! Unfortunatly, we did not see anymore deer... About 6pm, we headed down the mountain to the truck.
Drew came back with Nathan, and they had both seen deer. Nathan asked if we had seen anything, and I told him about the does and fawns. The only thing he really cared was "did Tyler get to see them?" When I told him that Tyler had a headache and was sleeping, they were genuinely dissapointed!!!!! When I told them about the squirrels, they couldn't have laughed harder!!!
Charlie and Manny got back shortly after... Charlie had seen a bear!!! It came to about 15 yards, then put his front paws up on a stump, and tried to wind him. He didn't "spook" but knew something wasn't "right" and he moved off. Manny, got to whatch the whole thing unfold, from up the mountainside!!!!!
It was a Good Day!!! Before getting in the truck, I looked to the sky and thanked the Great One, for blessing me with such fortune!!!!!
When we got home,it was time for "food & drink"!!!!! Nathan Started cooking, and Drew took charge of the grill. Venison backstraps, (of which Tyler ate probly half) and Buffalo chicken quaisadias, (sorry Nathan, I can't make them and I sure as hell can't spell them!!!) Plus, of course... More beer!!! It had been a LONG DAY, and it was an early night. The next day promised rain, so the probible outcome was to check the weather, then probly load up on a delicious breakfast, then see if the weather would be cooperative...
This morning was cloudy and warm, and the weather map showed Ulster County practicaly covered with rain. No, problem!!! Nathan worked his magic, and we had a HUGE delicious breakfast of Blueberry pancakes, Bacon, and Coffee!!!! By the time we were done eating, it was raining here in Poughkeepsie... So, we just made another pot of coffee, caught up on old times, and made future plans for new ones!
The rain let up for us to take a few pictures before they left. Tyler and I said our goodbyes, and I truely believe that you guys made a lasting impression on my Son! I will forever be greatful for this time together!!!!!
Thanks Again, my Brothers... For a WONDERFUL time!!!!!
My door is always open for you, Thanks Again!!!!! :notworthy:
wish i could have made it sounds like you guys had a time of it!
Congrats on a great time together! And Nate's cooking to top it all off!
Hi guys its tyler i just wanted to say thankyou for all the nice things you guys did for me especially nathan for the awesome cooking, charlie for being an excellent freind and listener, and manny for the knife and awsome times togeather. all of you are great people, and your great freinds to dad and me :smileystooges:
Not much to add to chucks recap. I am honored to call these guys friends.
I needed the bear to take a couple steps to clear a small bush. It was very still and I think he may have caught a thermal. IT was a nice beautiful bear, and a great experience for sure. But this is a deer hunting thread ;) :p :smileystooges: :campfire:
Thanks again for having us Chuck, I was honored to be part of such a great group. It was a pleasure meeting you Tyler. Drew
Thanks for sharing what's going on in your neck of the woods guys. I enjoy reading it very much.
Just back from the mountains myself and here's what my few days was like.
Good news so far:
Plenty of deer (small bucks so far)and bear by me in Monticello area.
Bad news:
I shot clean under a fat doe at 20 yards!!!!
No excuses. I blew the shot!
And a nightly visitor into our apple trees......

.........Philip
What can I say on top of Chucks and Charlie's posts :)
Great time was had, meeting a new hunter (Tyler) and hunting with brothers!
:wavey: :archer:
Until next time, thank you my brothers
F-Manny
Truly blessed to call you all brothers!! I'll post a few pics tomorrow.
Thanks again!!
Nathan
Man, I got rained out 2 days in a row.....Out early tomorrow.......
Phillip, That looks like a nice Bear. Better luck next time!
And now for todays Adventure...LOL! After the encounter with the does last week, I regrouped and went after them today. When I left last time I put a spot across the spot I was in in case the wind was not good. Got there this AM and wind was bad so I went across to the other spot. Good wind so I set up. Should be better because I can see the deer coming sooner and won't get surprised......."WRONG"!! At 8:20 the wind and driving drizzle stopped and I caught movement, but wait, it's coming from the wrong way. I get the bow up and some tension on the string. To late, the Spike horn is my shooting lane and locked on me.........AT 8 YARDS!! Can't move, the stare down begins. He finally gives in and bales out. I'm getting close.......... :dunno:
Keep after them Ron!!!!! Just a matter of time...
That's My Life Story Ron! Then, "close" only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades... :D ...
... mike ...
Just got permission from "the boss" to do a long weekend to Western NY in early November.
My buddy has been seeing a lot of deer on his farm
near Arcade.
I can't wait to get up there, thought I might have to miss it this year.
Good luck everybody. It's going to be good getting back to God's country!
Things have been real slow here in Putnam County on the place I hunt. I just hung a stand today on a new piece of property in Westchester County. While there I saw 2 doe and about 8 turkey. Things are looking up!!
Jim, Be sure to let us know how you make out!
Good luck Fred.
Ron, Glad your ole Ticker still pumps hard when the deer are in close. ;)
Well guys,I shot over a good 8pt. down by the creek tonight.Better a clean miss than a bad hit, right?Didn't seem to bother him too much as he went back to nosing through the leaves for acorns again.Hoping to get another crack at him and make this thing right.
Jeff, you used up your big buck Quota. Tell Tyler to stop chasing girls, then get down there and kill that deer.
Bummer about the shot but you are right, you could have been tracking a deer for 2 days.
hey Ron and now ya know how i could not get a shot at that 8 point last year at 7 yards!!! good luck man!!!
Charlie, you might be right about the "Quota" thing...or maybe I just made a crummy shot.Since the boy got a license and wheels he hasn't been in the woods much. When do you think you and the guys might be heading down this way?
here we go... (http://i381.photobucket.com/albums/oo260/nathan835/DSCN1101.jpg)
and who can forget the most comfortable looking spot ever!!!

Good times Nathan , good times! :campfire:
Thank you for posting
F-Manny
LOL thanks Nate!
Jeff we were down last weekend. I sent you a text but figured you didn't get it in time. we hunted in New Paltz Sat. night. that's where I almost had the shot at a very nice black bear!
Thanks Nathan!!!!!!!!!!
It was a pleasure having the Gang down for the weekend!!!!! :bigsmyl:
As you can see, they're already corrupting my kid, LOL!!! Tyler's a fast learner... At least he's learning from the best of them!!!
Just cause I sleep at the drop of a hat doesn't make me a bad guy, just an outstanding mentor for tyler!!! Thanks a ton Guys!!! These are the times that carry me through!!
Nathan
Charlie, may sound dumb but I don't know how to text or check 'em.Lots of bears down this way,a father/son team got 2 last week.
Nice pics Nathan, good looking crew :scared:
Hey Guys. This is a little off topic, but what Trad shoots/shows are there in NY?
I haven't lived there since 1998 and am out of the loop.
Is there a State Traditional Archery Association?
I want to go to some trad shoots next year in the NE.
Thanks in advance.
Now that is quite the "group"!!!!
Glad you all had a good time. Can't wait until I get to spend some quality time with this fine group.
I'm sure you all gained a little in weight after eating Nate's cooking!!!
Jim - I'll send you a PM. Lots of shoots in this region in the summer.
Wish you could have made it Tony!!!!!
Hope to see ya again soon!!!
Just came back from my evening hunt, was hunting my groundblind in the apple orchard behind the house.Got in my blind at 4.30,nothing moving just some gray squirrels running back and forth getting apples. Then I heard a real commotion about 40yrds to my left.thought it was squirrels making a racket a bunch of them in one tree.It turned out to be a bear.Never seen anything like it before. He was getting apples. He finally climbed down then right back up another.Watched him from my blind for a good 1/2 hour. Finally he climbed down again and off he went.I knew he was around by all the sign he leaves. Not many apples this year and he has them all skarfed up.He is a young bear it was a great time out just to see the show.
3feathers that is why we hunt, so we can see the unseen.
I swear thats the James Gang..Yikes...Critters beware...LOL

I see that the picture is taken from a low angle. I was curious and was wondering if Mike(Mcgroundstalker) took the picture or in fact was there :bigsmyl:
No I Didn't Take The Picture! And Yes I Was There! Are You Blind? That's me standing on Chucks' left....
... mike ...
What a beautiful mourning in area 4A, 35 degrees, clear and no wind. I set up where I have been seeing a few deer this mourning and at 7:35 I was treated with the appearance of a big mule faced doe and her two fawns. The little ones came in like gang busters while mom was more cautious. Just before she made my shooting lane she locked up and picked me off. Snort, foot stomp, and gone.....only to turn around and come back to check me out some more. No shot offered.......23 hours spent, have seen 6 deer, that's twice my annual average and I am pleased. Still a lot of season left! :)
Got a spike about 4pm yesterday afternoon. It was a mercy killing, my buddy who was hunting with me shot it way back in the rump. It ran towards my stand and a well placed arrow put it down. The hit was a little lower than I would have liked but the grizzly did its job.
Great pics of a great gang, Nathan! I am sure you all had a great time roaming the forest :bigsmyl:
We have been getting a lot of rain, which is messing things up. Oh well, plenty of deer season left.
Good for you Fred..... :clapper: Well done!
Congrats Fred!
Thanks guys, here's a pic....

CONGRATULATIONS, Fred!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
Congratulations!
Very nice
Awsome job Fred, I was just taking a couple practice shot and I see deer tracks going right up to the deer target. I guess I should be sitting on my porch haha. Trail camera is going to go out on it tonight to see if the little critter comes out again.
 :clapper:
Good for you Fred!
Good job Fred. Sharp looking bow and vest.
Nice going Fred...young deer...good eating.
3 pt or better here in our area....had a real nice 6 pt eighteen yds from my ambush location...problem was a 4 pt was walking by at 8 yds...Let them both walk.
Just before dark a large, beautiful coyote came trotting by. The Fedora came back easy...settled in ..estimated 30 yds...and sent the Superceeder right over his back. Scared the hell outta him...He bolted for far away places...
Had a real nice 6 pt easing past my ambush location tonite roughly 18 yds away. Problem...4 pt was easing by at...maybe 9 yds. QDM here..3pt or better. Let them both walk....

Sorry for double post...puter running slow.
Nicely done Fred.
Cool encounter Joe.
Glad you have lifted the black Cloud Ron.
Gonna try in the morning. Took the day off work.
GOOD LUCK, Brother!!!!!
Two days in a row..This 4 pt loves to hang around my stand..Very cool to watch...
Nice job Fred!
Hope you scared him enough Joe to keep him out of your area!!!!

I harvested this small 8 point Wednesday morning before work. Made a perfect heart shot, he only went about ten yards then started browsing for a second before flopping over.
Then Thursday evening I went out again and arrowed a doe for my second deer of the year. Made a less than perfect though, too far forward, arrow went in the back of the left should and came out dead center of her chest. It was warm out with impending thunderstorms so I only waited about 20 minutes before getting down and starting to track. I thought my shot was a little better than it was though and when I found my arrow covered head to fletching in bright red blood I got a little more confident. So I kept tracking blood for about 80 yards until I came up to a big puddle, it was just getting dark so I decided to keep going.
I tracked another 80 yards and came to another big puddle, then a couple spots of blood going off at 90 degrees from where she had been heading. I went about 15 more yards then saw a pair of eyes shining back at me from the middle of a pricker thicket. It was about an hour after I made the shot and I thought for she she expired but when I went in to retrieve her she jumped up and bolted away. I then realized that the big puddles I was finding were probably where she was bedding down and I kept pushing her. So decided to leave her for a couple hours and gathered my gear and went home.
I came back at around 1:00 AM and started tracking from where I jumped her. The blood was starting to get thin from this point but I managed to track her about another hundred yards before the trail ended and the rain started to come down heavy. So I did a couple circles around the last blood in a last ditch effort and found her piled up in a clearing about 30 yards from the last blood. she was full rigored up and looked to have died shortly after I jumped her last. I had her skinned out and in the freezer by 4:00 AM. But she must have been dead for about 4 hours with the guts inside in 50 degree weather before I got her cleaned up so I'm not sure how good the meat will be.
Sorry for the long post but I never almost lost a deer and this is actually only the third deer I've taken with traditional equipment (went completely traditional last season) and the first deer of my own that needed to be tracked, so I'm just looking to get some feed back from some of the more experienced guys on tradgang and to share my experience with others so they can learn vicariously. I'm also sorry I didn't post pics of the doe but I was soaked and exhausted and just wanted to get the ordeal over with as soon as possible although I was very relieved to have found her. Thanks for taking the time to read this novel of a post and your feedback. Matt (http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m527/mattysams009/IMGP0206.jpg?t=1350663647)
Well done on the follow up.......glad you did not give up.
Congrats. Way to stick with it. I think the meat will be fine.
congrats , well done
Way to go..
way to stick it out, you are right, should have backed out after the first big puddle. chalk it up to a lesson learned. it would have made your job easier. I know its hard when the sign is good.
Congrats on the deer. :clapper:
Congrats on the two deer that is awsome. as for the doe being good I would think she will be fine. It wasn't that warm out so you will be fine.
Matt,
you dont need us "experienced guys" to tell you anything!
Your novel says it all. You are a committed bowhunter and have all you need. Determination.
Bravo, Bravo, Bravo! and Congratulations!
..........Philip
I had this guy chasing off all my does tonight. When he attempted to chase a doe on the other side of me he passed at 10 FEET! He never made it to the doe. Even I can hit'em at 10 feet! Thank you Lord for this amazing hunt. (http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/DSC02935_zpsc63a4fc4.jpg)
Congrats Mike.
You would be surprised how many people miss at 10 feet. probably harder than 15 yards.
You did Good! :clapper:
 :notworthy: Great!!!
Good job putting an end to that 'doe chaser' Mike.
Tuck, does he stick his tongue out at you 'cuz he knows he's off limits? Maybe all that apple juice pee under your stand keeps him around.
Awesome ending Mike  He wont be chasing your does anymore :archer2:
Good job! Congrats!
Good eats and congrats
Way to go Mike. Congratulations
Was a nice morning no wind.was hunting on a ridge where I found some rubs.Had a doe come by but she was real high strung. The only shot I had was covered by brush again.Passed again.Had good action last evening,7does 10 turkeys too many eyes but a great time.
Great to see somebody is having luck. Thanks for the awsome pics and stories.Hope I can show something soon. Its tuff on the ground.............

I originally reported that I shot "under a fat doe the other day.
I cant lie, it did bother me that I would miss a shot by that much!
However.......
My brother just sent me this picture of my doe.
I didnt shoot under her as I thought. Looks like my shot was pretty much on target and she DUCKED THE ARROW!
She is doing fine after a week sporting a Wensel Woodsman hide slice!
Makes sense actually.
She was pretty nervous at the time. She was giving me the foot stomping, occasional look up at me in the tree and very tense.

Ive not had a good season at all. Got a call Thursday morning that my Uncle passed away peacefully in his sleep. Very sad as his son is 32 with a 2 year old son and they were all very close. My cousin is lost, my Uncle was one of our favorite hunting partners so just going in the woods behind my house will be very emotional. He was an avid deer and turkey hunter and killed some FINE bucks here in NY. He will be truly missed!
Way to go Mike!

Sorry for your loss Nick. Hopefully you will remember all the good times had.
I have made it out a few times but have missed 3 days caring for a failing Grandmother. I wont regret missing hunting for something like that.
Today I saw a HUGE Fisher. That was pretty neat. Only was able to be out for a few hours before I was called out of the woods due to Grandma.
Tomorrow I am leaving for a trip to hunt (and see family) in Wisconsin. I wont be posting here about my adventures but will check in on others.
Good luck everyone.
Thanks Charlie were going to spread some ashes on our hunting ground maybe it will bring some luck. Ill be out hunting soon I hope I really need to get a deer but right now my family needs me more. Hope all goes well for your Grandma Charlie its never easy no matter what age!
Sorry about your uncle 2Blade.Spreading his ashes on the hunting grounds sounds fitting.
Congrats Mike
sorry for your loss 2blade
Charlie , enjoy a good pipe in the wisconsin woods for me , good luck.
Off to the bow only zone in the mourning.....keeping my fingers crossed!
Absolutely will do Drew!
Good luck Ron.
Nick,I agree 100% with Jeff.
Chuck aka woodchucker and his son had a great close encounter today. His computer is down so hes not posting but I will say, Tyler made a GREAT decision. :clapper:

You are a great hunter Mike, nice shot with the trusty Bighorn.
Good luck, Ken.
wind and rain ARRRGHHHHH, sat it out for awhile though, saw a hawk, owl and a bunch of squirrels.
Had a beautiful mourning, but alas no deer in the bow only zone.....saw a woodpecker ,some tree rodents and a deer mouse....the mouse needed another year....LOL!
keep at it guys. sometimes the weather will ruin a day. I am looking at pouring rain tomorrow morning here in WI. for 160 non res tag, I will be getting wet :readit:

great job all!! only saw one good buck (actually the only buck) so far this year but was able to get a shot on him and take him.
sorry for your loss nick..
be safe everyone and good luck!!

md126.....well done..... :notworthy:
this wind will not let up! going out at 2 and sit a different field as i do not want to ruin the bean field stand.
Good luck Bro! I'll be thinking of you out there while I sit here in this cube LOL!
I'm going at 2 also....going to check out a spot on State land.....sit for few hours and just glass and watch! Hey....ya never know! :goldtooth:
Man O' Man, what crazy wind, I finally threw in the towel trying to play it. It just kept swirling and changing direction.........
Ron nothing worse that a swirling wind, good move.
your not kidding. THREE straight days of it!
better luck tomorrow guys.
Congrats on the buck MD
Is that Charlie reporting from Wisconsin....LOL! How's it going out there??
This year the wind has been crazy here in western n.y. Just came back in, took my 10 year old daughter Cora tonight, we sat on the ground in a totally new spot, i saw 6 deer she saw 5, it was a wonderful, calm, night. No shots taken just a little too far but, a fun time with her.
Mike(md126) texted me pics of his buck after he shot it. It was a shooter fer sure!!
Damn I miss New York. At least now I can live vicariously through this thread. Suprised I managed to drag myself out of the bowyers bench long wnough to find it.
Good luck to everyone up north! I'll be up opening weekend of gun season ... with a wooden stickbow of course ...
Saturday morning was to warm and nothing was moving. On Sunday morning it was 50 degrees and saw deer driving to my spot on long island. Hada doe come through at 7:30am walking fast and didn't have a shot. At 8:15am three does came in to check a scrape about 30 yards from my stand. Looked like momma and last years fawn and this years. Everytime momma was close enough for a shot she was quartering towards me or kill zone blocked by a tree. They fed around for a 1/2 hour then left. I had to do some side work so got down at 10:15am. As i was cutting some branches to open up a new shooting lane a spike comes crashing in and stands 5 yards away panting. He looks at me for a full minute and then slowly walks away. I raised my bow up just for fun and he just looked at me panting. I had heard dogs barking earlier and I'm guessing some people were walking their dogs and let them chase after this guy for awhile. I can shoot unlimited does so I always let spikes walk. Great day for sure.
Getting ready to head out for a full afternoon of still hunting in this rain. Then sit for the final hour in a spot where I have my eyes on this nice buck.
Nice deer guys! I've been battling the flu the past week! still have a bit of a cough. Good luck all!
Got in a short time ago. No deer seen still hunting....must be moving too fast...not Serpentine enough... :nono:
Located some nice fresh rubs and one small scrape. filed the area away in the brain. Rain never let up, sat the final hour and saw 8 turkeys, just out of range. Woods very noisy with this rain, stayed bone dry with my camo Frogg Toggs. Love how lightweight the jacket is.
Wiped down the Superceeders, sprayed down my Zwickeys and hung "lefty" up. Need to get a small leather saddle for the Fedora and wrap the grip. Rain made it a tad slippery. Keep The Faith...
Joe I was thnking bout you when it was coming down..Gotta be in it to win it...It's heating up..
Had 3 hour sit today in the AM. Not much moving it seems.....a balmy 50 degrees.....
I took a walk between the lil dude's bus drop off and pick up today. 8 does and a spike. Had one doe at 21 yards. Then I busted up a flock of turkey, and mouth called...no takers.
A lot of action for just a mid day walk. Maybe some of you guys should try a mid day sit...
Just left NY after a 5 day Vac. Saw a really nice buck [150] at the Genesee Comunity College just a couple of hundred yards west, in the green field. We were visiting the wifes relations. Saw a ton of deer. They are not hunters and have no idea if there is any public land availible to hunt on. Is there any land around exit 43-46 on the thruway that is availible to hunt on.
Thanks-Hap
Hap,
I know that NYSDEC website is a wealth of information on where theres state land.
Heres a link to the page for region 8 which encompasses the are you're talking about.
http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8276.html
Helps to cross refernce with google maps.
After a very quick look, Rattlesnake Hill WMA looks like a good bet. Very close south of Geneseo, just west of Dansville. about 5000 acres and some adjoining state forest.
decent amount of state land in that area, check out google maps.
Good luck.
You can hunt Letchworth state forest out there. good deer numbers.
My buddy near Arcade saw 22 deer in the picked corn Saturday evening, too far from his stand, though. I'm chomping at the bit to get up there! He's passed on some small bucks, I don't pass on legal animals, just hope I get an opportunity.
I remembeer going to up state New York in 73 on leane from the Navy, it was october and the deer were so thick you had to crawl down the dirt road to the farm,I have never seen so many deer as I did there.
It's not 1973 anymore........Things have changed.
Apparently,but it was amazing.
I'm planning on getting out Saturday before the wind and rain hit Long Island.
Same here mint, might be the only day we get.
Had three bear cubs come by tonight, very neat to see
QuoteOriginally posted by drewsbow:

That would be pretty cool to see.
It has been really slow here; did shoot a nice doe Sunday morning with my Don Dow Stik . The rut needs to kick in but I'm very happy to get meat.
Not so many deer showing up so far--maybe when the thermometer dips and this predicted front comes through!
Going for a little still hunt/scouting foray. Still real warm but I will see what's going on.
Going to hunt in the morning. Its been so warm Got the first 12days of nov. off maybe my luck will change........
The woods were void of life this afternoon....
I WAS gonna get some hunting in this weekend but got called in to work... We need to be ready at Jacobi Medical Center just in case Sandy hits us hard... :dunno: Oh Well... "Overtime!"
... mike ...
Went out 1pm til 4 at one location. Missed a turkey at 30 yds. too many eyes (7) birds so I waited for the last one. He had that look when I drew the back back like.."What the He...". Those hot pink feathers looked good in flight...about 8" over his back. Turkeys sure do run fast...
Then eased into natural blind number 2 about 400 yds away. Just as I eased in...deer coming trotting in over the ridge...Too late..deer turned and ran outta there...Deer sure do run fast.... :dunno:
Hey Joe! Do Turkeys Sur-Pen-Tine As they Run?
... mike ... :p
Hunted yesterday a.m. saw 12 deer from the ground 2 were bucks, hunted the same area again this a.m. saw none. Went turkey hunting with my 8 year old son tonight and saw 2 bucks in a cut corn field running a doe and we could hear him grunting. then on the way home saw a nice buck running another doe in the headlights, i think things are a changing.
Heading out behind the house in the morning and Sterling Forest on Sunday morning.Sightings have been somewhat scarce this year so far,but that can change in a minute.Good luck brothers and be safe
Bow only zone in the AM.....Haven't seen a deer there yet but tomorrow maybe the day......I keep my fingers crossed!!
The saga continues in the bow only zone of Albany Co. Not a deer to be seen yet. Shared my area this AM with a Hawk who was giving the squirrels fits....pretty funny to watch the whole show! Looks like the weather will be bad for a few days with this hurricane Sandy deal, hope everyone stays safe and dry!!
Glenbo...whereabouts in Sterling?...I hunt there all the time...if I ever run into you it would be the first trad bow I;ve ever seen there except for my brother's and my own..lol
Went bow hunting after work Thursday with my 21st street longbow and woodies. Found were a young buck had made a string of scraps down an old roadway across the road from my house ( one always does! }So I decided it might be a good opportunity to see if I could bag him from the ground, just me and my bow, no blind natural or other wise. So anyway, I walked down that old roadway to a spot were the road edge banks down steeper towards the creek. I chose a tree large enough to hide my torso when I stood in front of it, and decided to just stand there and see what would happen. As I walked to the tree, Two doe started running toward the south pretty much straight across from were I would be standing. Well I got to the tree, which was only about five feet from the old roadway and stood there watching without moving my head. Sure enough after about a half an hour here comes that young buck. He was walking on the same side of that old roadbed that I was standing on, and right down from the exact direction I had walked from. He gets about ten feet from me and stops, looks a round a bit and then looks right at me. I thought for sure he would make me out,and that would be that. Instead he started gaiting again right toward me and right past me at six feet away. I thought," how awesome is this" so he gets past me and goes about another ten yard occasionally dropping his head to smell the ground. Suddenly he stops, smells the ground and picks up the smell of his lady friends. Turning south with his nose to the ground, he jogs over to the other side of the roadway, giving me a perfect, slightly quartering away broadside shot. Well the rest is history because I sent a 160 grn. ace right threw both side of that deer at seven yds. He only went twenty yds. before laying down, and I waited a half hour before backing out for a return recovery. Wow, what an awesome hunt. My plan this year was to get another buck from the ground, but I thought I would be using more cover than just a tree trunk. The buck is just a year and a half old seven point, but he's a trophy to me. I was hoping for a larger buck, but the size of the hunt outweighs the size of the rack in my view. Anyway, I thought it was a good hunt to share with everyone. Enjoy your season and best of luck.
David, that is AWESOME man!!!!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!!
Pretty cool!
me and Manny sat for 8 hours and did not see a deer. he did see turkeys but no shot. i am hunting harder this year then i have in a long while and have only saw 3 does running across a field. still LOVE to be out there with longbow in hand playing the game!
Congrats David. Thanks for sharing your hunt! Keep at it Ken. It'll pay off eventually.
Way to go David  I went out around 2:30pm this afternoon and deer were already up and moving. Jumped 4 on the way into the stand. Did see one small doe about 40 yards away and had a hawk land in the tree in front of me. That was cool to say the least!
Pointer,I usually head over 17A towards Greenwood Lake.I m hoping to check out some of the archery only areas come gun season.
Very well put Dave " The size of the hunt outweighs the size of the rack". Contests on the harvest.
Down in Westchester it has been very slow. I've seen a could deer while on post. Got one shot. Clean miss. One of my buddies saw a nice buck in the area. No a rub to be had. Weather has been way to warm for me. I hunted yesterday from 6:00-12:30. Took a high point in the rocks about 15feet above the ground. Had over a 250 yard view of my entire area. Not an animal. I started pooping and snooping at about 10:00 and nada.
Silver lining of the coming storm, all leave will be down, giving better visibility
David - that was congratulations on your harvest! Darn auto correct!

Thank you all for your kind words, Like all my fellow trad hunters, I enjoy being in God's great nature and hunting with my traditional equipment. A harvest is just icing on the cake. Hunting Deer is a great love of mine and helps me keep my perspective on life. I truly wish you all a fantastic season.

congrats David  :clapper:
Last week I saw a doe and two yearlings. No shots offerred but none asked. Today I saw two little antlerless - either Ma stayed in the cover or she was elsewhere (Neighbor's freezer?).
Just at sunset I heard shuffling and a lovely eight-point rubbed my nose in it. He came in straight, passed DIRECTLY under my feet and continued off in a straight line. I have been burned with straight-down angle shots and let him pass . . . and I guess I'm happy with that. It was a joy to see a good buck but I am second-guessing and rewinding that mental tape repeatedly.
I think I have finally learned that if you can second guess then you likely guessed correctly to begin with.
God, I love this sport. When I climbed down 10 minutes later I could smell his scent! I take it the rut is begun or close.
Several weeks ago I had a larger buck walk casually ascorr the road and stand just inside the woods as I drove to work - just 1/4 mile from home. Also an eight-point rack but much taller and larger on all counts.
Can't say I haven't seen anything!
Happily I have not seen a single coyote. Last year I saw more coyotes than deer during bow season.
had a big 8 point trot right in front of my truck this morning when i went to get groceries. nose to the ground from one side to the other, NEVER looked up, he was a BIG one....
Sounds as if everyone is having a great season so far. Congrats David.
Looks like a week packed with Rain when I return tonight. funny that's the way I left the state a week ago.
Thanks Charlie, I hope every one can get out this weekend, the bucks are going to be seeking hard for that first Doe.
bumped this guy on my way to my stand this evening, he was bedded with a doe...already called work and told them I'd be late tommorow, I see bucks like this on my property about once every 5-6 years, and if he's hanging with one of the does on our place, I've got to strike while the irons hot!

That's a good 'un Larry.Hope you get a crack at him.
Good luck Larry.
Jeff where you been, you almost always have a biggun down by now :p
Hope You have a good season.
May he step right to that spot were you want him. Best of luck Larry
at least i know they are moving when i can hunt them!
this is one UGLY buck but i bet he would taste good!
Good luck Larry. I hope you get a chance at him!
Ken, when I look at that ugly little buck I see mighty taste back straps, steaks and burgers! Go get him, my friend.
Did a 2 hour mid mourning sit today....didn't see to much. I did see a fresh scrape on the way in.....first one I have seen. Nice to have it a bit cooler.!
If it isn't raining I plan on going out after work and sit for a couple hours.
I haven't been out as much as I'd like, with the rain and wind. Plus, I got my flu shot two weeks ago and had flu-like symptoms last week!
Started to notice some movement and rut sign, and then Sandy came along with her high winds and the whole thing shut down again! Hoping for more action going forward.......
Going to go out tonight if it's not raining,It is suppose to be a great weekend and week comming up. I'll be hitting it hard, good luck to all.
Find the Does this weekend and you'll be were the bucks are.Early mornings should be best.
I just got in from checking my cameras. The deer are moving like crazy! I saw over 30 deer in 2 hours! The only deer close enough to shoot was a small eight point. Aint that the way it goes when all you have is a doe tag? :banghead:
saw two bucks this morning, neither of them the big guy, and no shots avaiable, they are starting to move fella's!
It getting cranked up. I have seen four bucks today three I would have shot had they been closer. Peter Smith shot a dandy this am I will try and get pictures up.
Going in the mourning, would be nice to see some activity........haven't seen a thing in the last 5 outings. Maybe that will change in the AM!!
Good luck Ron. I won't be out until Sunday morning due to work and family obligations. But I just found out I have Monday off, so that will work! I just have to find the does. Good luck everyone!
hey guys...I've been away from the board for a while...
Earlier this year I started researching finding land to lease in NYS but could never get any of my fellow Mass hunters to bite on joining in....and 1) I hate hunting alone and 2) not made of money so looking to share costs and such...
does anyone need a partner on a lease in eastern NY for the 2013 season?
there is a LOAD of public land that i hunt, you are welcome to hunt with me or learn the land for yourself. the Northern zone is hard hunting and few deer. the Southern zone in places has a good population.
Ya, a lease would be nice but Ken is right, there is a ton of state land available.
Hey Ken where are those places with a good population?????????
i had between 50-100 turkeys by me but not close enough for a shot. On the way out I put the stalk on a nice mid size buck. when I ran out of cover I tried to call him in but he didnt want anything to do with me. after I wheezed at him, he turned and walked the other way quickly.

:saywhat:
Seen 4 does this morning and the biggest spike I ever saw. He's not a young deer either and those spikes have to be 16" straight up...
Hit the woods around 4 tonight. Eased into my "fence corner" ambush spot. "Sandy" took down some large trees and I was interested to see if the deer pattern would change. Had 9 Turkeys ease by in the rain, a tad too far out and too many eyes.
5:20 a doe and yearling come bounding by to my right...no more than 10 yds. Stop, then trot right behind me. Wind was perfect so I sat tight. Sure enough...here comes another set of legs...a small 4 pt chasing them. This guy decides to "cut them off" and bounds by me no more than 5 yds.
He never saw me as I had to laugh...just before dark, here they come again. All three passed in front of my spot, no more than 10 yds. I waited 15 minutes, then eased out. Luckily the rain made the woods a nice quiet carpet.
Heading out in the morning, then going to Jersey to bowhunt with Bamboo and Southpawshooter Sat. The Tri-State Terrors looking to put some added venison in the freezer....
Good luck Skipper, you'll need it with that crew :bigsmyl:
3 hour sit this AM......SLOOOOOW, not a thing was seen. Same spot where I have been seeing a few deer, wind was good.......just nobody home!
SOOOOOOO Close.......Went to the Bow only Zone again this mourning, had been using a ground blind but decided to free style it today. Got in before daylight and set up on a high point over looking a gull and woods road and to my right a hard wood flat. Wind was good and I settled in....it was chilly. At 7:30 I pick up some movement and I see an era flick....deer! The doe fed towards me and I thought she would catch my wind at any second. She turned and dropped on to the woods road a started down.......can this be happening!!!
So as the doe walks down the woods road I slowly move into a position where I can draw and shoot. She goes behind 3 big Hemlocks that are close together........I think to myself, 3 steps and she'll be in the shooting lane, I come to full draw and can feel my anchor lock in! One step, two steps, one more and it will be a green light....She bolts!!! :scared: :scared: I have no idea why she bolted, she took two jumps and went back to casual pace and started browsing again. :dunno: :dunno: I sat there and tried to think what could have made her do that.....have no idea. At 8:30 I looked to my left down in the gully and there is a deer feeding, up goes the head....it's a buck!!!
He's feeding along ,I'm watching my wind indicator and him and all is good. He starts up the bank and it looks like I'll have a 20 yard shot, maybe a bit more. He goes behind a clump of trees and I get ready.......he never comes out....LOL!! He must have walked straight away from me and I never saw him again! I think he was a 4 pt. or a real small 6. One hour later 9:30 ...............I see a UWD [ unidentified walking deer ], it was so far away I don't even know how I saw it. Even with the binos I could just pick up a leg ,an ear or a flick of it's tail. BUT......not a bad mourning hunt! :coffee:
Happy for ya Ron! That kind of action would make my day too! Gonna miss another weekend in the woods due to Sandy... The job is holding me close... Darn Hurricane! :p
... mike ...
Great Morning Ron
keep cracking, It will happen!
I didnt see anything. I sat in an observation blind and watched. Think I scared one on the way in but it was windy. I did notice a bunch of new scrapes. I am having a hard time figuring these deer out.
Sounds like you have seen more deer already this year than most years. Keep at em. It has to be a matter of time.
Sounds like a close one Ron, I'm heading out with Joe shortly.
saw a doe flying by at 20 yards just as you could start to see, don't know if she winded me or a buck was pushing her.
I missed four days of work due to the storm,so after cleaning up the yard I did get out for three sits. Wednesday morning I had a large bodied deer cross 35 yds or so before light.I could make out headgear but really too dark to study horn. The rest of the morning all I saw was a hen at fifty yards.Went to a different stand Wednesday afternoon and saw nothing. I did hear another hunter rattling every 15 minutes exactly till dark. Thursday afternoon I took my climber to a hardwood ridge close to the Thruway.I was set up at three and at 5:30 I looked to my left and had a decent 9 pt come in to 20 to25 yds. He went behind me and just cruised away. No shot opportunity but nice to see deer. This morning I got set up in the same tree at 5:45 and watched a truck on the power lines spotlighting. I was glad when they left. Had a small buck pass at seventy yards or so,and that was the morning. Heading down to Sterling Forest in the morning. Good luck brothers and be safe.
Sightings this year seem to be a bit off for me. I spend considerable time hunting the woods that are a hop over a stone wall from my home. About 60 acres or so of mixed terrain bordered by power lines and the Thruway. There are other hunters that use the property but I am lucky to be able to hunt from home. I am somewhat perplexed as to where the does have gone. Sightings of antlered deer far outweigh does. Just gotta keep at it.

Glen, as I recall sightings were down last year also.
Good luck, you have a great place there.
Charlie, looking forward to the rest.
I heard through the vine blood was spilled in Western NY.

So Drew......are you speechless..... :dunno: :dunno:
Wow Ron...same thing happened to me..lol...it was a little basket racked 6pt..I tracked his approach from my blind, he passes into some brush...I stand and get ready to draw...soon as he pops out from behind that oak I've got my chance...He never came out..lol..I lean to my left to look around the oak only to see the twitch of his tail as he walks away after making a hard right turn while he was screened by the oak...

WAY to go brother!!! now lets hear about the hunt!
Drew ,you could of washed your face for the photo....
Great deer Drew! Congratulations
Congrats Drew.
Drew, nice job! Makin' me jealous.
BTW is that a Stewart Slammer?
Very nice Drew
Way to go Drew real nice buck.
Nice buck dude! Really cool rack.
good thing i got my deer when i did. this morning i managed to break and chop the tip off my ring finger of my right hand. back on now, less a nail, but i wont be drawing a bow for some time.
prognosis is good, but i have to now see a plastic surgeon and arthro. surgeon to make sure it takes and the nail grows back correctly.
dumb, dumb, dumb. oxycodone don't fix stupid.
Congrats Drew and Charlie!!!!
Charlie, I hope your finger heals quick enough for rabbit season.
Nice! Congrats!!
Just got done getting my deer hung up, I shot a nice 14 1/2'' 8 pt. tonight. Nice 12 yard shot right through the top of the heart and bottom of the lungs. But the weird thing is that there was no blood trail at all,he ''donkey kicked '' after the shot and I knew it was perfect heard him run for 5 seconds then stop but I couldn't see him, I waited then heard a swoosh of the leaves. I was hoping the sound was him falling down. Took up the trail 15 minutes later and after 50 yards I could see his glowing eye in the flashlight. Shot him with my 54 lb. Sky 15'' TDX ,Beeman shafts, and Zwickey 2 blade Delta. It was probably the best shot out of my 23 deer I have killed with a bow and my worst blood trail. Thank you Lord for chance, and the gift.
Awesome Gerald, they sure were moving good this weekend.
Congrats Gerald. Good shooting.
Longrifle: I shot a buck right through the heart. He ran about 40 yards and stopped. He just looked back where he had come from and just dropped. From where the arrow hit him to where he fell there was not one drop of blood that I could find. A bit of research and it turns out that if you hit the heart and it stops beating there is no blood pressure....therefore, no blood trial. Food for thought.
Congratulations Drew. Nice buck
Sorry to hear about your finger Charlie. I'm glad you got your deer before the accident. Speedy recovery.
CONGRATS DREW!!! Nice buck.
Good job Drew!
I'll post a hero shot here as well.

Gerald, that deer has a hUge Body.
Congrats!
Congratulations to all.
......Philip
Great job guys!
I had to pass a nice eight point at ten yds sunday morning , looking for a doe now .
This is why bowhunting is so great...and frustrating. Strong north wind, dry leaves, a few new scrapes and I settled in my ambush location at 2pm. Haven't hunted this spot since the Hurricane.
Large trees had fallen courtesy of Hurricane Sandy and the only spot I couldn't shoot was to my right. A small knob that deer travel, maybe 15 yds from my spot. I catch movement in a small field 60 yds out. No mistaking that super white muzzle...I glassed the deer and he was a nice 6pt.
He stops, staring in my direction he starts to trot my way. Bow ready, eyes focused...then...maybe 40 yds in front of me, a large doe comes bounding..straight at me. She hangs a left (5 yds away), tops the knob and is standing behind this massive blowdown no more than 8 yds to my right.
Praying the 6pt would follow, I concentrated where she just came from. Not to be...he decided to "cut her off" and comes trotting in at an angle to my right, spooking her off and HE decides to stop...exactly where she did. :scared:
Here's this deer, eight yards away, eyeballing the doe and I'm kneeling there eyeballing him. Maybe a minute or two passed when he turned left and continued after the doe, offering no shot.
Darkness came and I eased over the stonewall fence and cut away a bunch of limbs. Now I have a clear 15 yd shot to my right. If I hunted this spot a few days ago, I would have seen the mess and cleared out a shooting lane. We'll see what happens the rest of the week...
Good Luck Joe. Must have been neat to witness! I think tomorrow will be a good day in the woods!
It's only getting better..The more time you spend out there the better your chance will be...
Had a fantastic mourning......saw 8 deer, 2 real nice bucks, a nice 8 pt. His rack is either goofy on the right side or it's broke up. Then at 9 AM I saw a slammer   ......20"+ wide G-2 and G-3's are 8-9 inches with excellent mass all along the main beam. No shots were available but what a way to start the day. That big one is 130+ class and a heavy weight!!!
You better be careful, Ron. Wouldn't want you to break your streak of not killing a deer in how many years? Actually I am looking forward to seeing you with some horns in your hands and a smile on your face.
Ron, you sure you aren't just describing the picture of the deer I showed you on my phone last night? :biglaugh: Sounds like a great morning! Thanks again for the limbs and the good chat, to bad it was getting late, would have liked to talk longer.
It was a great morning...wish i could have stayed till dark but other commitments and rapidly deteriorating weather compelled me to leave around noon...still saw a couple of deer that passed behind my blind...no shot opportunity but always great to see deer when i hunt...tells me I'm doing something right..lol
Jason.......nice deer you showed me on your phone last night....but he is a pup compared to what I saw this mourning.....Mr. Carlsen......how you doing, just so you know....I don't need horns....lol!
Hey Ron - you start baiting this year or something? Lot of deer being seen.... :)
You are getting real close Ron! I hope you close the deal soon, my friend. I had a real good day at work.....uhhh, actually it sucked! I'd rather be in the woods :biglaugh:
I'm sorry ronp, Maybe your day at work will better tomorrow.......
had two little ones around my stand for about 15 minutes, a button buck and a fawn, my mouth was watering thinking about those tender backstraps, but I just couldn't pull the string back, must be getting soft
Larry: I always question myself when I shoot a young one. That is until I sit down at the dinner table.
Have the next five days to hopfully get the deal done. I am heading out early in the morning and ready to rock and roll good luck everybody.
Rut is pretty good down my way. Went to a good rut spot in a swamp that boarders State Land. I immdiatly realized there was no scrapes or rubs which is odd the place is usually torn to pieces. I found out why after sitting for about 35mins I hear an audible bleat call. Its someone on a Can Call not 65yds away! Wind was good for me but where he was sitting it was blowing right into the bedding area! I snuck out went home and had a beer. I cant believe the bad luck im having!
Great job there Gerald!!!
I see alot of steaks and roasts on that buck.
You Da man :notworthy:

Exactly :bigsmyl:
Those young ones aren't only tender and tasty, they're easier to drag out of the forest!!!
I took this young 8 last saturday. I was hunting some public land and saw him rubbing and making scrapes. I gave a bleat and a few grunts and he came in fast. He paused just as he hit one of the few shooting lanes I had. As I released, he took a step and I caught him in the liver. He took 2 steps and just stood there and it was too thick to get another shot into him. He finally bedded 18 yards from me but it was so thick that every time I took my eyes off of him, it would take 5-10 minutes to locate him again. I waited over 2 hours until I climbed down, hoping he had expired in that time. He had and I didn't even have to do any tracking.

Hey Greg, Nice looking buck Congrats!!!
Nice buck Greg! Good looking bow, too.
Nice one Greg! Angle Fly?
That's a great buck, congratulations!
Nice buck, congrats!!!
Thanks guys I was using the 50# Shrew classic hunter carbon that my wife bought me last year, cedar arrows and 250 grain VPA Terminators. Last week was the first time I've hunted with this bow.
Tony- Yes it was
Perfect size drag handles buddy!
... mike ...
Yeah,what Mikey said.Way to go Greg...that's a good 'un.
Way to go! Congrats!
Nice one Skipmaster!
Good tactic - being patient and letting the head and hemmorage do it's work. :clapper:
Hey Skip, NICE Buck! Save a few deer for the rest of us Westchester guys!
Nice buck Greg , congrats
Nice animal Greg...should eat real well.
Drove about 2 miles up the road to one of my river bank honey holes. Perfect wind...north. Deer bed east, head up a couple ridges, then north to the feeding area.
Got situated at 1pm...strong winds. Sat there until 5pm and never seen anything. Not even a squirrel...Maybe tomorrow....
Very nice Greg :archer2:
Looks a lot like the Buck I shot this year, rack is about the same size, only mine was a 7 point. Nice Buck There's just something extra special about harvesting Deer with traditional bows. congrats
Greg, Nice to see you on here again.
Congrats on the deer. That property is a beautiful place!
Now is when I like to jump Does, and then sit down wind of the trail they took. Time to get more aggressive!
Had the same experience as Joe Skipp today, but did see one squirrel, right before dusk, he came down the tree, waked over to the pond, got a drink, and went right back up to his nest. Never watched a squirrel drink before. Other than his neighbor, a red squirrel, that was it for the whole afternoon, not even a chickadee. Weird day.
nice buck Greg.
Had a crazy hunt tonight, saw 7 deer total, missed and saw the biggest buck of my life all on my property. It's funny how you can be so focused one time and make a great shot, and a few days later totally blow it and bounce arrows off of trees. That's what keeps me comming back for more, there is alway's more too learn.
We've all been there! I missed a chip shot at an absolute monster a few years back. That's what keeps us going back and now at least you know he's out there!
Get em longrifle! You can do it buddy
Saw a real beast last night about an hour after sunset crossing the road about four miles from my house - right down near the river in a fairly densly populated area! Nice, tall-tined eight point at least with just the start of "crab claws" on the front beam tips. Looked like his antler genes had put all their effort into up instead of wide.
I'd rather see him over a broadhead instead of in the headlights, but it was a treat none-the-less. He's got a long season ahead of him. Gun starts in a week.
Just wanted to let all you NY guys that I enjoy reading and keeping up with this thread! Good luck!!
Just got back from a morning out.Nice and cold but no movement.the wind was a little swirlly too.Deer have been holed up past couple days where I hunt, hopefully this afternoon something will move.
:(
Did a 2 1/2 hour sit today, thought I could maybe catch some deer movement on some state land....not much going on. I never even saw a squirrel. Used a ground blind I made 2 years ago, the wind was perfect for it. Back out in the AM to see if I can get a crack at the big one I saw the other day. I have seen 17 deer so far including 4 bucks.....unreal for me!
Better be careful, Ron....you may have to take a shot in the not too distant future. The bucks are moving pretty good right now.
Haven't seen much lately, except a really lonely red squirrel who won't leave me alone!Kep at it-- 1 week to go and some poor weather during part of it.... wind has been a pain this season.
Nice mourning out, set up to cut the deer off the way they have been coming in......Wrong :banghead: At 7 am I turn my head and I'm greeted with a deer blow, Wind was good, but he must have seen my head turn and I was busted!!! Nice high racked 8 point....real nice deer. Didn't really blow out of there just walked fast for 30 yards and then went back to a stroll. That's now 1 spike, and 4 racked bucks this year.....I have to pinch myself!! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
I'm tellin' ya ron...just sayin'!
I had a spike and a really big, but young 4 point chasing does around my stand this morning. I'm looking for a real mature buck now and the does didn't offer any shots. Found a set of huge buck tracks this afternoon on my way in and have a few does bedded in the valley below me.....
Well finally-- small doe came in then skittered off just as it was getting too dark to see twigs in the way of a shot. The a LOUD grunt from 10 yards behind me and a real nice 8-pointer comes in to 15 yards, definitely on the prod, nose to the ground after that little doe. Even if he'd offered a shot, it was too dark to take a chance. Nice to know he's around, though! :archer:
Saw a flock of 24 Turkeys again today... checked the trail cam from this week.
3000 pictures of grass blowing. had 3 deer on it. I had it in a huge trail over looking a scrape. all 3 deer were bucks including a nice 8 point (now 7) I have caught a few times, always at night.
My buddy a compound shooter went to state land on the VT border. he had some guys come in with rifles and shoot a buck. then after they left he saw a black bear.
No buck tag had to let a nice 7 walk, he came into 9 yards and just walked on by. My friend was with me in another stand and all he saw was a squirrel. I sure would have liked to have him in the stand I was in he still has his buck tag but that's how it goes.
Good Luck tomorrow Susan. :wavey:
I will be taking your old stand to a piece of public ground in the morning. I have decided the deer om the farm I am hunting are nocturnal and only crossing a huge field. 5 sits with deer sighted, time to do something different.
I feel your pain Jim,since i killed my buck last Sun. I have had 5 different bucks within shooting range and 2 were real monsters, all I want are some does.
Yep,you never see a big buck untill you shoot a small buck. But it's way better than shooting no Buck at all.
Just move to westchester. Lol. I can take unlimited does and up to 8 bucks!
Been trying to keep up with this thread. Sounds like there is a lot of great times happening in NY state.
@ Ron W. keep at it man, it is getting crazy in the deer woods.
@Joe Skip, good thing you got that lane cleaned up.
Congrats to all who have taken deer so far.
Rumor has it the Cyclic rivers did the deed this am!!
It ain't a rumor Ron , I seen pichers , hehe
Yep, It's a fact!! got a pic on my phone from Charlie this morn'in.
Well ya see guys....I'm low tech.....my phone is on the wall. I just talked to him and the deer is loaded and he's om his way home! Story to be told later!
:campfire:
Charlie must be taking a nap....... :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Sorry guys.
Had chores to do. I am pooped!
I am downloading Pictures.
ALL RIGHT CHARLIE!
See - it's that good Karma you sent my way coming back!

Congrats on that nice Buck Charlie  :campfire: :clapper:
Way to go Charlie, nice BUCK ....Feels good don,t it!!!!
way to go buddy! great job!
Great job Charlie! Great pics. :clapper:
Spent all day out still hunting with Mr. longrifle yesterday in swirling winds. Not a bad day though. Saw 16 deer 4 were bucks, and had a beautiful 2 year old 17" 8 pt walk up within 25 yds. No chasing going on though. It has to explode anytime here. Maybe this cold front is what they need.
Congratulations !!!
Well my season is pretty much over.
I may try another day or two but unlikely.
Had a great time this year but no venison.
I missed a fat doe, had a staring contest with another fat doe at 12 yards and yesterday another contest with a fork horn buck at 20 yards.
Lots of bucks in my area since the 3 point rule which I love. Got 5 different rack bucks on trail camera and this is the biggest pictured so far. 50 yards behind my house. Never seen him before! He's got some age and the belly to prove it.
My season pretty well ended today also Phil..I never dropped the string and its entirely my fault....
This morning a nice 6 point is coming down the trail, headed right towards the mock scrape and scent wick I placed about 18yards from my blind. I can see him approaching from a good 75-80 yards so I had plenty of time to plan for a shot. ..I stand when his head is obscured by a small group of trees and get into position...Based on the wind direction and his travel route I can see he's not going to reach my mock scrape or scent wicks so I have nothing to stop him and I don't like moving targets if I can avoid them.
Anyway, he passes into the opening and I grunt to stop him....three times!...and he never broke stride!!It's like he was deaf or something
By the third attempt to stop him he's starting to get beyond my range so I decide I'm going to make a try for him becaue I've been shooting the bow really well this year....I can't believe he busted me but I barely made it to half draw and his head whipped around and I had to freeze...
We played that game for a few minutes with him constantly picking his head up to catch me moving but I wouldn't shoot at an alert deer...its just asking for trouble..
Hopefully I make it out for the late season but I never know for sure if that's gonna work.
Let 4 does feed by tonight around 4:30, then a small 6pt came ambling by just at dark. let him walk too. Tomorrow is another day.....
Good for you Charlie!Happy for you bud.I'm diggin' the hat too.
I've had some close encounters with some decent bucks but no dice.Today I watched the biggest buck I've seen all season pass on the bench ridge below me.When I climbed down I did some scouting down there and found 2 fresh scrapes where he came through.Gonna try and set up on it tomorrow if the wind is right.
Good Luck Jeff! I bought it at Denton Hill!
I hope you get another look at that buck!
I put some time up at Sugar Hill yesterday afternoon and this morning. Weather was good, plenty of fresh sign, only the sign makers were missing. Watched a big bodied 8 pointer this morning feeding his way across an open field. I couldn't reach him with the grunt call. Thought he would come into me, but he decided he was safer walking the field than coming in where they normally do.
All in all, a good NY trip. Will do it again next year.
Shick in Pa.
What "bow" should I use Saturday morning? My Winchester or Kanati? :dunno:
... mike ...
That last day of regular archery can be a good one, Good luck to all my fellow NY Trads who haven't scored yet.

Winchester makes a bow?!? ;)
The clock is winding down on another early N.Y.archery season.I hunted all day today,saw3 different bucks and heard another grunting but, couldn't see him. Saw 7 does, and heard my first chase of the year going on down the hill from me,lots of crashing, but never saw the deer. I will go tomorrow evening just to end it properly. Then it's time for the T/C pro-hunter .45 cal. muzzleloader. It's not over til it's over.
I finnaly got my first trad buck!! Crazy story I made the shot on Halloween night just a hair back but looked pretty good. I backed out which turned out to be bad because it rained and I lost all blood. I looked for the deer for hours with no luck I was pretty dumbfounded. Yesterday my Uncle goes hunting on neighboring property and runs into one of the hunters that have permission.
He said he seen a 4pt come screaming by his stand with a pack of kiyotes right on him. They killed the deer in front of him and it turned out to be mine! Explains why he didnt lay down the coyotes are getting worse. They ate my whole deer but I was lucky enough to salvage the rack.
Nick thats wild man. Better start shooting/trapping those coyotes. Imagine that, seeing a pack of coyotes kill a buck right in front of you. I'd be having deer and dog stew.
Don't discount the gun season, even opening day for bow/trad hunting. Alot of guys out on opening day are the one day a year guys. They won't be doing much but pushing deer around. They'll go in for lunch and half wont hunt sunday.
Stick with it (no pun intended) and theres plenty of opportunity in gun season, remember 90% of the hunting pressure will be down after opening day. Personally I'll try and set up in tight cover where I know the deer feel concealed, you know those tight deer runs through the thickets. Get in a stand or a blind overlooking a fun runs like that and let the city dwellers drive the deer to you.
Last year my hunting buddies convinced me to take a gun out for opening day (never killed a deer with a gun, I always take my bow) as luck would have it I forgot how to gun hunt and always end up setting up for bow hunting, ended up with a button buck at like 7 yards. For those of you who do as little gun hunting as I do; apparently 7yards is well within the effective range of a 30-30 winchester.
Anyway, good luck to all. I know I'll be in NY for opening day - thanksgiving and I'll be out with a hickory selfbow.
Cheers
Ive only seen it in videos I found it hard to believe at first. Weve killed a few durning deer season but now that shotgun is opening tomorrow I have a hunch a few more dogs will bite the dust before season is over :)
Well it's over people, had a wonderful season, saw alot of deer this year, had many close encounters, and had a ball hunting on the ground.
Not over yet.......Bow only zone and the late season. Still some time before we have to get ready for next year.........
Unproductive sit this morning in my red plaid camo.
Nothing moved in my direction and I only heard about 6 shots....from 6:45 to 8am. Working this weekend so I won't get out again until Wed afternoon.
Sat dawn to dark yesterday with nary a sighting. Took an average doe this AM w/ my muzzleloader. Now I can get back to bowhunting!
Down here the movement has slowed down a bit. All the bigger bucks are locked down with does and the rest of the does are hiding. Now's the time to sneak into a secluded thicket adjacent to doe bedding areas and travel routes. I've killed quite a few bucks over the years as they were with the doe they were breeding. I took a great buck this way on Friday morning after spending 35 hours after him this week. I used the training wheels though.
Greg,my son showed me a pic. of the buck you just got.WOW!Good for you...again!
Great morning with a bit more activity for a change. Had a small basket 6 move past the stand at about 30 yards early in the morning. The rest of the morning was quiet until about 11:00. A doe came out of a nearby field and trotted past my stand at about 20 yards, but was moving just a bit too quick to chance a shot. 10 minutes later, one of the larger bucks I've been seeing on this property, a 130-135 class 8 point, appeared in the field and entered the woods at the same point as the doe. I could tell he was on her trail and got ready. As he took the same path as the doe, I could tell something looked a bit strange. He's now HALF of a 130-135" buck! He broke off the right side just below where the brow tine juts out. Anyhow, he comes in right to my tree at about 14 yards and stops.....hard quartering toward me. I had tension on the string, but a quick turn and he was behind a tree in front of me and was back on the path of the doe. It stayed quiet for the next half hour, so I got down. Had to get back to the house and let the dog out!!
I've been seeing more movement lately around mid-day and I'm guessing the less mature bucks are trying to get in on some action!
Good luck everyone.
Tony, Sounds like a good morning.
Good Stuff! Tony, you have put your time in, it will happen soon!

Thanks Jeff.
Congrats Greg.
Back from Georgia ,now I can get back at it.....
Let's finish up strong boys! Good luck to all. A little over a month left here in Westchester.
Happy turkey day all, killed 2 with my .45 cal T/C pro hunter this morning. A 4 pt. and a doe, I will be going to Letchworth Park tommorow with my bow, can only shoot does there.
SWEET longrifle filling the freezer for the fam.
I had decided that today would be my last day trying to kill a deer with my recurve amongst the pumpkin clan. Then I wake up to see that my wife is heading out "Black Friday" shopping and leaving me with the kids all day. :banghead: Oh well, I guess yesterday was my last day trying to get it done the hard way. Monday I'll me out there trying to poke holes in the lungs of a big fat buck with my Black Hawk.
Congrats to everyone who has taken deer this year with trad equipment. And thank you Izzy for starting this thread. I read it every morning with my coffee. There's some great guys at this "cyber camp" :campfire: God Bless.
Bear with me...Worked Thurs night, got home 3am. A few hours sleep and I had some errands to run. See,
my mom's 60 yr old furnace died. Won't get the new one until Tuesday. So, had to make sure space heaters were keeping her bedroom was warm.
11:00am..just leave the bank to head home, my truck won't start. Dead...just won't turn over. Call my AAA and get some women from Latin America who I can't understand and she can't understand me. After yelling some choice words in the phone, I hang up and call my buddy....owns a tow service.
He brings me and truck to my Mechanic..."Could be the starter but I won't get to it until Monday morning."...He takes me home and to relax, start shooting the bow outside. My mind really wasn't on bowhunting but I figured what the heck...what else could go wrong....
So, I head behind my mom's house to hunt her 5 acres of over grown orchards. This is right across the street from my home....I nestle in at 2:30 and sit there until 4:30 with no action. couldn't entice anything in with my doe bleats and grunts.
I pack up everything in the Catquiver, grab the bow and stand up. Bingo...taking his time and walking by at 40 yds was a decent 8pt. Maybe 16" wide, small tines but large body. You could read his mind...I'm leaving here and heading over there, get outta my way.
Now..over there means across mom's small field, across the road, across my front lawn then into the field behind my home which is 300 acres of overgrown orchards and hardwoods. After letting him pass and outta sight, I hurried to the back of mom's lawn and watch the deer walk around my home, take a few minutes to rub a sapling, then head off.
The only thing left to do was head home, shoot a few arrows in the shop, take a hot shower and pour a large Sangria. Tomorrow morning is another day...
Go get him Joe!!!!
I spent the last two mornings hunting an archery only area across the river. It is about an hours hike up from the truck so I usually start out in a tee shirt and long johns and finish dressing as I cool down. Thanksgiving morning I was set up in a rocky cliff overlooking a hardwood ridge. Had a doe and a decent buck by my low standards come in but never got closer than 40 yds. Walking out I had a staring contest with three does at 30 yds until they had enough of me. They must have known they were off limits.
Yesterday I headed up again. About 300yds up the trail I realized my bow was on the roof of my truck...back down I go. Sat till 10:30 and only saw one doe. Two beautiful mornings weather wise but no venison yet. Hopefully I will be back Sunday morning. Still time left. Trying to stay positive.
the orange army killed a 160 class buck right out my back door, yes it was the one i had been bow hunting..... saw the deer and it is 160 green scored....
Can't seem to catch a break, can you, Ken?
Bummer Ken! Think positive 'cause there's another one up there with your name on it!!!!!
Ken, that sucks. I hope you get his brother, or father! Hopefully he bred plenty of does this fall and spread those good genes.
Ken, that super sucks! :(
F-Manny
You had to know Ken that it was going to happen, just from the track record of the locals...... :dunno:
Bummer. I have a neighbor with a permanent disability who finds time in his schedule to hunt seven days a week through bow, gun and muzzleloading season and scout for months prior and usually ends up with the local bruiser every year. Sometimes the top two.
Out with the bow yesterday PM, howling wind and the start if a snowstorm @ 29 degrees. Sat for 2 hours-- saw a decent 4-pointer but he wouldn't be tempted to come any closer than about 60 yards. Keep at it, I guess......snow camo today!
I was planning on bowhunting this weekend but am sick.
Good luck guys, the Orange pumpkins didn't kill everything.
Ken, keep at it, with people in the woods and the rut being on, these big bucks could travel 10 miles a day and then hole up tight.
The farmer on our property in WI was bailing corn stubble, said he saw a huge buck, it was so tight that it wouldn't move from the field until he bumped it with the tractor tire. the orangies are all hunting the woods and here this bruiser is in the "open". When I say bruiser, this deer was BIG.
Been a tough season for me this year, mostly because of time. I used 2weeks for bears this year, so I'm not really complaining. I passed on a large bodied spike about two weeks ago. I had a real nice buck come in just before legal shooting light. He was right under me. I didn't have a shot as it got lighter. My time should be freeing up a little, so Ill give it he!! The next few weeks. Good luck everyone!
Keep at it Sean, they will come in wanting to look at your new bow :readit:
A neighbor two miles down the road just sent me a picture of his 11 point gun deer. Hokey Smokes! I hope he put down some genes before he expired.
Well, last night I did a coin flip, take the gun and try to fill a DMU permit or grab the bow and go to the bow only zone.........the bow won. Beautiful mourning, 28 degrees very little wind so I set up my pac-seat where I have been seeing some activity and at 7:30 I see movement! Grab the field glasses and pick apart the woods. And there it is.....a nose, then an ear, I keep looking and behold it's a buck. He's not moving but I can see he has Looooong Spikes with tiny forks on top. He's at 60 yards and not coming any closer, as he walks away I can now see 2 brow times so he's a 6 point. Stayed till 9:30 and no more action. That's the 6th buck I have seen this year and total of 19 deer, with 3 close encounters. My best year in a long ,long time! :wavey:
Ron wish you all the luck go get em.
Taking my wife in the a.m. with a gun, trying to help her get her first deer, then it's off to the park for a doe only bowhunt in the evening.Let's keep at it guys, i want sooooo bad for someone to get one during the gun season.
Back to the bow only zone in the AM.....taking my lone wolf climber this time and maybe ,just maybe I'll get lucky. The River Runner is ready to go, so it's off to bed and up early to try to get it done. This will be my 22nd hunt of the year......can't say I ain't trying!
good luck Ron, at least your on them! i have saw 3 deer this year, 3 does running at around 150 yards....
Well ,I think everything slept in this mourning except me......lol! Never saw a living thing, went to bed it was 32 and it was 37 degrees at 5:15, 40 by 8:30. Crazy weather.......Maybe it just wasn't meant to be........
Same thing here ronw.A heavy fog rolled in after 1st light, lasted maybe an hour, and I sat out 'til 11 and saw nothing but a couple treerats and tweety birds.Scrapes have just been hit, fresh scat and tracks but nothing.Just getting over a full moon, maybe mid-day would be better.
While driving yesterday the deer were definitely out mid day every where I went.
Iv' seen them out mid day yesterday also, but not any Bucks, just Does. Dannnnn-it
Hunted most of the day today. Saw two Deer, actually one, the other one I heard when it heard me. Both Deer were near or at recent blowdowns from the sally storm. I knew it wouldn't be long after the onslought of gun hunters, that the deer would move in on those tender morsels. Maybe now I can harvest another Deer.I find most Guys say they don;t target wild Deer foods as a place to hunt.Keeps working for me  Hope everyone is having a fun season.
Been awfful quiet, guys.
I haven't seen anything but antlerless at a distance. Starting up Southern Zone late season now.
Will be hunting this afternoon, Thurs and Friday. Long night here at work. I'm hoping my "Freak" buck made it through gun season but I won't get too picky this late in the season.
I think I'm throwing in the towel...... I may get out one more time but it's not looking good. Had a better than average season seeing 19 deer, 6 of them bucks and one of those was a conservative 130+.I think I'll go for snowshoe bunnies on Saturday.....just for something different! My Northern Mist needs to meet the Adirondacks....LOL!
I'm hoping for some good luck this weekend. Last Saturday the wind was perfect for a stand in a woodlot where a nice big 8 point is bedding. I got busted by him in early november and then last Saturday evening i thought i was going to get my chance. He came out following a spike at 4:30pm and they sparred for fun for a little bit and then the spike started to head south to my stand. he chose a closer trail in the open woods and picked me up in the bare tree about 15 yards away, did the head bob and then contiued on. Now comes the big 8 point and he picks me up also, did the head bob thing then turned quickly and headed to the right, i ws hoping he would turn left on the farther trail which would have given me a perfect 20 yard broadhead shot. But of course he heads down to this fence line by the houses 60 yards away and feeds for 15 minutes and then turns left and heads south. If I had been in my other stand location which is 15 yards in front of this stand and if the buck did the smae thing i would have had a 15 yard shot if he came behing me. Unfortunately this stand is real close to the main trail i thought he would be using.
Come Saturday I'll be hunting this stand hoping he comes from the south to go to his bed. If not I'll be hunting Sunday evening in a stand where i saw him come out of the thick stuff. The problem is there are no large trees in the area with any cover.
I'm going to give it one more shot up in the Bath area. Will head up tomorrow before noon. More than likely stay until Sunday morning(unless I'm lucky). This will be the first time I'm hunting this later season. Good luck to all.
Shick in Pa.
Went this a.m. to Letchworth state park with my bow, only saw one lone yearling, too far for a shot, deer have been tough to see lately,I am still taking my T/C cal. muzzloader most of the time,I would like one more deer for the freezer.
Good Luck guys.
Yesterday while driving back from Buffalo, I saw a decent buck feeding with a group of 3 does. There were in a small wood lot between the Thruway.
I will be headed to the Adirondacks with Ron Saturday. I want a snowshoe hare in a bad way.
I've been hunting hard. Mostly having nice young bucks hanging around. I can't count the number of spikes, 4's, 6's and 8's I've been passing up. At least 20 different bucks and many of the same ones over and over. One 8 I passed would have gone 120" all day long but he was only 2.5. I hit a monster non-typical in the shoulder 2 weeks ago. 3 inches over and he would have been very dead. Only the head penetrated and I'm sure he'll be fine. I know the deer and he is at least 8.5 years old and this was the first encounter I've ever had with him while hunting. Really hoping to catch up with some doe this week.
One of the spikes that keeps coming by

A nice 8. It's hard to see is g2's in this pic but they are as long and the g3 you can see. The second pic is farther away but you can see his g2's better

I'm going back at it this weekend, until the weather deteriorates. Put some memories in the freezer next to my black powder doe, if nothing else!
I really enjoy following you guys in the woods on this thread. Its so cool to hear about hunts in a place so much different than where I live. Kinda funny though as you guys have the same ups and downs as we do here...just a bit colder and have not seen where any of ya`ll have seen a SNAKE.Hope ya`ll continue to post your hunts and those "snowshoe" adventures . I enjoy reading them. Good Luck and Happy Holidays,RC.
Greg nice pictures..Good luck..

Not this year. Last year I did see a rat snake while out bowhunting - a first ever in October. Also mosquitoes!
Global warming. :archer2:
This year has been above normal. Last year was freakishly warm. Several years ago it was -15°F on the first weekend of late archery - which will be coming around again this Saturday. We hit 63°F last week. Wild!

Thanks buddy. Not too bad for a camera phone
Had a good season so far. Killed a nice 4 point toward the middle of early bow season. I was fortunate to have dozens of other oppportunities at many other small bucks and does, but just didn't choose to shoot any of them. I did take many pictures of them though. I wanted to get out at least one more time in hopes of adding a nice young deer for the freezer. I left work at 3:15 PM and my hunt lasted all of 5 minutes in the stand. I was meat hunting and when the young deer walked in I didn't hesitate and it was over very quick. I had the nice sized deer field dressed and loaded in the truck by 4:15. I forgot my boots and hunting pants so I was hunting in my black work shoes and dress pants. Sometimes things are just meant to be. Had an amazing dinner of fried deer heart. Not a bad day for a rainy and drizzly work day. Been so long since I've been on here that I don't know how to post pictures. I'm gonna give it a go for the last day of our season tomorrow after work.
Maybe I have to start hunting in my dress clothes! :dunno:
Good job Terry,I love it when people can put it all together near the end of the season, nice. I will be going out in the morning, going to a bow only area in Letchworth Park, almost had a shot at one the other night there but she saw me starting to draw and didn't hang around long enough to get killed. Good luck to all on our last day here in the southern zone.
Congrats Terry :clapper:
Good Luck Gerald.
Congrats brother....you make it seem so easy sometimes :notworthy:
Wow Terry, lucky your tie didnt get caught up in your string :saywhat: . When a man knows hunting it doesnt matter what hes wearing. Congrats and glad to see you back. I hope to see you in person soon. Hope the kids are all enjoying their new endeavors.
I made it out for the last day of the season. The rain actually slowed to a light drizzle and it was rather nice. Temperature was mild and the deer were moving. I saw 15 deer including an 80" 8 point that I've been passing up. Nothing wandered within my comfort zone, so there are still plenty for next year. Been a fun year but a little lonely without any my kids as hunting buddies. They are spread out all over. Tyler in Brazil, Emily in Manhattan, Jeff in Utah, and Jen in Utah a couple more months until she leaves for Southern France for 18 months. Life goes on....
Well N.Y. bowhunters it's over for another year. Thanks so much to all you guys for keeping me informed on all your deer hunts throughout the season,it was fun to follow you all this year, with Guru and his son's first year to everybody and there ups and downs.I ended my year in my pop up blind at Letchworth park tonight, like Terry I saw 15-18 deer, 3 bucks, some close but no shots taken. The Lord has blessed me with a great 29th year of bowhunting, blessings to you all Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Gerald
Slow down there! It ain't over for everyone! Westchester is open until the end of the month. Lol
I'll be trying to get out for the last few in Westchester. Got a bad cold though!
I'll be in Westchester in the AM trying to fill a tag or 3 :archer:
I wouldn't mind trying a westchester hunt. My old bear Grizzly is begging me to go.
Good luck to the guys who make it out this week.
Good luck in Westchester everyone and keep us posted!
Would somebody please motivate me into (hunting) Westchester this season... I'm still kinda :( about loosing my brother on November 29th, but I think "tame deer" taste just as good as wild ones! Maybe even better. :dunno:
... mike ...
Get out there Mike.....it will help clear your head. :campfire: That's the best I can tell ya!!
A few days in the deer woods will soothe your soul Mike.
Mike ive been having the same problem which is why I havent reported here in awhile. Depression really hit me hard after losing my Dad in 2010 he went in the Hospital the night of my Birthday. Then Oct 18 2012 I lost one of my 6 Uncles on my Moms side. It really hit me hard as he played a big role in my life and we hunted a ton together. I just aint had it in me to hunt lately. The urge will come back it just takes time! Ill be ready by our late season in Janurary I hope you will be too!
Thanks Guys......
I've really enjoyed reading about your hunts guys. It's nice having a thread devoted to one state, and how that compares with us in other states. Merry Christmas to all of you!

I didn't realize that it was still open down there, keep at boys,I guess it's not over til the overweight, slightly rotund,or large lady sings.
