Hey guys, two different family members just got new property in Oregon and Washington and I thought it would be AMAZING to bowfish salmon during season. Unfortunately, I do not know what the laws/regulations are for Bowfishing salmon in these states nor do I have much knowledge on what my setup should be.
All I know is that I HAVE TO get the AMS Bowfishing Pro Retriever (http://www.*********archery.com/ams-bowfishing-pro-retriever-bowfishing-reel-right-hand.html)
Aside from that, my questions are:
1. What should be the poundage for my bow that I should use? I know I should not use an expensive bow since water will get onto it and it'll probably get banged around the boat alot, I just want to know what is recommended.
2. Is there a correlation between the poundage and how deep the arrow will penetrate the water (every 10lbs is 5ft of water depth (just made up an example)).
3. I know I'll have to get a different type of arrow for this sport, but will the arrow length be different from what I'm shooting now for field targets?
Thank you very much guys! All information will be much appreciated :)
first check the states regulations carefully
i highly doubt that it will be legal
these states take pride in there salmon and steelhead runs
bowfishing is primarilly used to control trash or invasive species of fish
fortunatlly some of these so called trash fish are great table fare
i shoot a 56 # bow @30 in of draw and typically wont shoot over 4-6 feet deep straight down
use a solid fiber glass arrow designed for bowfishing along with your choice of bowfishing heads
most importantlly be safe and have fun
South Dakota is the only place where I know of that you can blowfish for Salmon
