On occasion I have seen Dale Dye bows show up here on Trad Gang (One listed as we speak). I always hear great things about them and have even thought seriously about ordering one. I know he does not have a website (I have checked), and so I can not look at pictures to get an idea of his workmanship. Was wondering if a number of you would be willing to post pictures of your Dale Dye bows. Sorry I have nothing to show (at this time!).
If you do a search on here you will find plenty of pics that show his masterful craftsmanship.
Mine is a 60" bow, 56#@28". Cocobolo riser with a snakewood stripe, snakewood tip overlays. Not sure of the limb veneers but they look like stained elm. A nice find from the classifieds.

Sweet looking bows!
Those are some beautiful bows. Anyone else?
I have never shot one but I have seen a few.....they were all just beautiful!!
Do your self a favor if you get the chance shoot one, do it(unless you don't want to buy one, because if you shoot a DD you will want to get one) I can't believe how smooth and quite my DD is. It is the same weight of by Blacktail and other bows but the smoothest by far. my Blacktail is faster at the same wait and shoots great, but the DD is quiter and smoother
TTT
Very nice checkering.

Felix, what are woods that are in your two Dale Dyes? The combinations are extremely nice! Thanks!
The first one is a Macassar Ebony with a Bocote stripe.
The second is Cocobolo with the Bocote.
Thanks Felix. I spoke with dale this morning and he is sending a brochure. Appreciate everyone's sharing pictures and thoughts on this topic. If there are more, keep it coming!
Dan,you are welcome,if you make a search there was a thread on PW with many pics of quite a few guys about the DD's.

I have to stop drooling on my computer these are awesome!!!!!
I'd like to know who Steve Berger is. My Dye bow I posted earlier was originally made for him, as are several more in this thread. If he let these nice ones go, I'd like to see what he hung on too.
Steve Berger lives in NYC. Dale made more bows for him than anyone else. I think both Dale and Steve told me somewhere in the range of 62 of them.
Steve is a consumate bow trader. You should see Steve's name on a lot of Dye bows, as he ordered many of them over the years......then sold or traded them.
Hayslope this is a cool info!

I love this bow very much. It is top shelf in every way a bow could be.
BUT, I have trouble pulling 57# these days and will send it to Mr. Dye to see what he can do to lower draw weight.

Thanks for the info, been wondering for a long time why I saw Mr. Berger's name on so many Dyes. 62 bows...wow. I'll bet the ones he kept are fabulous...
Vintage bears you can just send to me and I'll shoot it for you.
Great looking bow.
Beautiful bow Philip. I have a spare set of 49 lb. limbs (fastflight) if you want to shoot it before you send it back to Dale. Not your usual 55lb., but at least you can shoot them.
Tony,I don't think Philips can use your limbs on that bow.LOL. :biglaugh:
Thanks Tony!
I hate to cut the limbs off though.....lol
Very nice gesture my friend. And boy you guys have some sweet Dale Dye bows! Felix, yours are amazing too.
Yes Philip, because Dale knows how to build a bow.
I ain't ever seen an hugly DD.

Woops!!!! I didn't even notice that it was a one piece!
Old age creeping up on me!!
You know, I am really glad I started this post! These bows are incredible! And yes Dave (Dirtybird) I did get the visual of you drooling on your keyboard! Thanks everyone. If there are others, keep them coming!
I just received my Dale Dye back today.
I sent it to Dale to reduce the weight and the bow looks like it was just made! He installed his new rest and plate and sent a new string.
Was 57# and now 54#. Big difference.
The bow is amazing and my compliments and thanks to Dale.

Thanks.
I cant wait to take her hunting!
I get my one piece next month and can't wait.
You will have to post some pictures when it arrives!
Here is mine, love it, but I do need to shave a few pounds off. I wonder if Dale could do this? 3-5 lbs.

I'm sure he can do the same for your bow.

If he can't you can sell it to me.....nice bow!

I cannot get over all the great bows Dale has made over all these years! The pictures are a great testimony to his workmanship! Thanks all for sharing... it got me so fired up that I just bought a Dale Dye Medicine Point. Check goes tomorrow and the bow should be here some time next week!
Dale Dye bows are my favorite custom bow.
Thanks for sharing pictures.
I am looking forward to receiving mine. Should be the beginning of next week as long as the storm doesn't blow the mail truck off her route!
Following this thread myself. I'm up for a Medicine Point very soon. I actually have been 'working a plan' for a long time. I finally acquired a fantastic piece of heavy-grained cinnamon colored chechen, which has layers of warm color, and even a gray-sage effect. The grain and color is unlike anything I've ever found. I'm combining it with veneers of custom yew with much wavy grain and black pin knots. Add in my own preference in the Medicine Points, and I think it will be spectacular but not extremely gaudy bow. I have to name it...and I'm planning on christening it on a Montana cougar in about a year.
Wow beautiful bows!
Sounds amazing Kevin.
Please post pics when that bow is built!
I'm thinking about having Dale build me a bow too. I'm fond of dark rosewoods / Ebony / cocobolo with no medicine points.
ALL his bows are legendary but I am very fond of his one piece model. My favorite take down is and always will be Fred Bear take downs.
My "Swift Medicine" just may be the finest bow I ever shot.
.........Philip
Beautiful bows. I am waiting on my Dale Dye also. It was suppose to be here in November but DirtyBird cut in line. :dunno:
Mike,your buddy can't do this to you.LOL
I can't wait to see Kevin's.
Philip, all Dale's bows are stunning, but IMHO,the Pierce Points make the difference, not many bowyers offer this feature and I think they are his trademark and worth the additional cost.
I Know Felix.
Looking forward to seeing Kevins bow also.
Felix and many others are an inspiration to me when it comes to beautiful and imaginative custom bows. I enjoy coming up with the 'next big thing'...and then watching someone else go 'one-up'. These are the golden days of traditional bow art and crafting.
"I'll show you mine, if you'll show me yours"....but you go first!
Kevin, you are right you know our play!
I think this site has helped the bowyers to arise the bar, everybody benefit of this, but for sure not the wallet!
Kevin, I enjoy seeing the works of art you think up....can't wait to see this one!
Kevin, I too will be looking forward to seeing your bow. Your past creations have been amazing!
Thanks all for keeping this thread alive!
Allen, Mike & Felix....(and many others)...you guys are the real bow connoisseurs of our age. I'm just tryin' to keep your taillights in sight!
If there is such a club, count me in.
Oh, David....you would be a charter member!
Kevin, you are too kind, but I really think that everybody here is helping to design and build better bows. Before the Internet the bowyers made bows alike for years and years,in few years of this and other sites everything is evolved and improved so much.
I am going to open a special bottle of red in your honor,Kevin.LOL. Lunch time here noone aound!
Bring one of those bottles to Ohio Felix. :D . And Kevin after reading just some of your hunting stories the only tail lights I see are yours. David's love for bows saved me big on a steak dinner.
My new Dye will have hair from three of my past K-9 partners in the riser. It's going to be a special bow.
Mike, that one will be a special DD for sure!
I was planning to come to visit you this fall, but my mother was bad and passed away last week.So be prepared next year a f.....g Italian in your stands, but with wines and cheeses and as a cook.
Prayers for your Mother and Family Felix. Looking forward to your visit. Dont forget your turkey tag.
So sorry to hear that your Mom passed away Felix. :(
Condolences Felix to you an your family.
Mike I did you a favor by ordering that bow.
Thanks for your help.

Nice collection,David.
Beauty, Dave. Glad you are a righty. I don't know if I could take the temptation if I shot one of those.
Felix...my most sincere apology for the sorrow of losing your mother. Hard time, I know.
David...my appetite is whetted, and in more than one way!
Here's to men with fine tastes...and to their bows!
This is my new Dale Dye. 60in and 55@28. It shoots like a dream. I could not be happier with the bow. Dale put hair from three of my deceased K-9 partners in the riser. Nikko, Amber ,and Arrow. Powerful medicine. Right now it is set up for Turkey season.

Mike, That bow is stunning!
Thanks ISP 5353. Dale did a great job.
That's a beautiful bow Mike.
Where are your pics Dave.
The pierce points and checkering are beautiful. These bows look similar to Robertson Stykbows. Is there a connection?
I do not know enough about Dale to give you an answer. I have owned both and the grip is very different.
Dick Robertson taught Dale how to make bows after Dale retired from being a cop. I think there are a lot of people that don't know how long Dick has been making bows. I could be wrong but I think Dick was the first to use exotic veneers under clear glass.
Cool, thanks. I remember there used to be a little info on Robertson's website about who taught him to do pierce points. I thought maybe it was Dale but it's the other way around...
Juneaulongbow, I'm fairly sure that info is correct but i'm not 100% sure.
Nice piece,Mike!
Dale was making bows in the latter 1980's which is the first time I contacted him. He was the sheriff of Hamilton, Montana for 29 years and retired somewhere around 2005. He has been making bows far longer than his retirement. I also think he is pretty much self taught, feeling the need to preserve the sport he loves. I will call him tomorrow and check all this out.
Jim Brackenbury was using veneers under clear glass as far back as 1989, which is the first time I contacted him.
Also, if you ever get a chance to visit his shop, you will not believe how clinical it is...CLEAN AS A WHISTLE. And this brother is a fly fishing master as well.
Thank you Felix. I hope to show it to you in person one of these days.
I everything will align it is for November!
Will, that would be very interesting to hear how Dale got started. Like I said I am not sure of the whole story, it's just the story I heard.
I think Dick Robertson started building bows in the late 70's or early 80's.
Dale was self taught on building bows and being a perfectionist as a craftsman helped. Dick Robertson I am sure had words of encouragement for mr. Dye. The is an interview in TBM from a very long time ago. Both bowyers are masters of there craft and have some of the nicest bows I've seen.
Dick Robertson and I are good friends, Dick lived about two miles from me. He started in the bow biz about 6mo. before I did and we swaped Idea's (traiding secrets). I nerver taught Dick or he never tought me. We kinda stumbled through it on our own. Dale E. Dye
Wow,
:saywhat: A word from the Man Himself.. Now that's Legendary and good to see you are on here Mr. Dye...Welcome Sir...
About 10 years ago I saw a one piece of yours sold to a friend of mine for $65.00...Had a fella's name "Tom Sawyer" as I recall and it was a one piece I believe that was late 80's early 90's.More like 86 or 87 I think..Mr. Dye doe's that one ring a bell? I tried to buy that bow and almost had a Loggy Bouyou tree stand swapped for it but the guy wised up and kept it....I just remembered the name Tom Sawyer was on it was all.... Nice looking one piece and I know he only paid $65.00 for it from a boilermaker ...The guy needed the cash really bad....
All I can say is wow.
I talked to Dale earlier in the day and told him of this thread. The notion interested him. He is 75 now and still "making sawdust" as he told me. He sounded great and very enthusiastic
Brethren, whoever had the insight to post this deserves credit for recognizing the importance of key individuals of our past. KUDOS. Let us not forget that we are indebted to some living legends.
I just ordered another bow from Mr. Dale because of this little exercise...due next year. Thanks!
That was like seeing the BIGGEST BUCK you ever seen and he vanished back into the deep woods never to be seen again...Where was he hiding all this time and just 2 posts :biglaugh:
Great looking bows! I just have to ask the question, what are medicine points? They are very decorative, but a search on the web yielded zero results. I've noticed several bowyers offer them, but I think Dale is perhaps the most noted.
Obviously they are phenolic or a polymer of some type, but it stumps me how they would be placed into the riser.
Thanks,
~CB
Wonderful man, call him, talk to him and discuss ideas and thoughts.
Would love to visit him some day or better yet pick up my new Medicine Point coming very, very soon.
Thank you Mr. Dye, for such a wonderful bow to shoot.
Great to hear it from the man himself. Thanks for sharing Dale. Dale's bows are works of art that shoot even better than they look. I will post some pic's of my dye's when I get some good pic's taken.
I have a 62 inch, 55# @ 28, non-ff Dale Dye. Everyone that shoots it comments on the smoothness and how quiet it is. The cast never ceases to amaze me. I have to shoot a few out of it each time to re-train my brain after the Silvertips.
D.P.
Tom Sawyer- I looked him up, 1987 he paid 178.00 for the bow and I delevered it July of that year. I made 7 bows a month, now I make Two and have more free time.
Dale,
Good to see you here, are you going to make the MBA banquet later this month?
I have been trying to avoid this thread, it brings out one of my definitions of agony.
Dale once made me a one piece with Medicine Points, he rushed my order, it was only a twenty one month wait. Unfortunately, I developed shoulder problems that required surgery during the wait and was unable to shoot the bow when it arrived. As the shoulder wouldn't heal I switched to left-handed for three years. Four years after ordering the bow, two years after receiving it, I still wasn't able to fully draw the 60#'s and the likely-hood ever doing so was slim. Ended up selling the bow without ever shooting it at full draw. As fate happens, the shoulder got better a year later and I was/am back to shooting 60# regularly.
Go figure, sometimes it's not ment to happen.
If anyone reads this post and owns a dale dye and lives near north alabama or will be attending the Howard hill shoot in Birmingham alabama in may please let me shoot your bow! Id love to own one!
Back TTT for Dale's amazing bows.
Dale, great to see you posting. I am friends with Marvin Heath. I know he's owned A LOT of your bows over the years. BILL
Here is mine, just got it in and I love it.

Nice baby Danny!Back to them?
Thanks Felix,
I have always liked Dale's bows and have been waiting to find the right one to place back in my rack, was offered this one and could not pass it up. 62",rosewood/bacote riser with the medicine points and medicine wood limbs, ff,53#@28". AD Hammerhead lites fly perfect out of it.
Congratulations Danny,
Stunning bow!
It was mentioned earlier that Dale "retired somewhere around 2005. " Not that it is overly important, but he has been retired over 25 years from his peace officer days.
This does it! Between Felix and Danny ,i cannot keep up any more! Time to go buy some more lottery tickets!!!!! Felix I think i'm going to Montana soon to do some work on your next Silvertip! :help:
I have a very special Dye bow in the works that will be done in the fall of this year. One of these days I will have to take some pics of mine.
Dale is a really great man that's an artist and master bowyer, I have owned one of his Medicine points since 2006. Its 58" with chechen riser with black and yellow points with an accent strip of snakewood, also checkered grip and antler tips. Its smooth as silk and plenty quick. Its the only recurve I own now that I switched to Hill style longbows but his recurves are as good as it gets for function and beauty IMHO. Also You wont find a nicer more humble man than Dale he is the real deal.
Does anyone have his contact info so a fella might get in line?
Dale will welcome your call at 406-363-2983.
Sergio you are more than Welcome,I trust on you!
Hey Sergio,
You might even see my new Tip if you go to Montana,LOL.
Here's a few riser I own, great bows and Dale is easy guy to get along with, I don't remember the woods. Last time I counted I had 12

This is a great thread, love seeing those Dye recurves. Definitely a master of the craft.
Post 'em up, it seems there's been a few photos promised that haven't shown up... :readit: ... :jumper:
I'm waiting on a new special one from Mr. Dye that should be here any day. I was hoping for today but it didn't show.
I have seen two of my old bows both with my name on them. Both medicine points owned now by limbow and Kurt in Memphis. Great bows. Tim in NC

Any more? Kevin? These bows are beautiful. I just have a hard time with that long riser. I like short risers 17" and under. My special Tip on order is a 15".
Keith, Mike is going to post some pics of the newest edition. Its a very special bow that is simply stunning. I can't wait to see your special Tip you have coming.

I'm not the best photographer so sorry for the poor pics that don't do these bows any justice. Mr. Dye is a true artist and master at his craft.
WOW! Thats all I can think of right now!
Beautiful bows, congrats on the new Dyes! Looking forward to seeing your new bow Keith.
Stunning DD,indeed; maybe the sweetest I have put my eyes on!
You want me to order my third one.
BEAUTIFUL BOW DAVE!!! enjoy it i wanna see it broke on some bacon in FEB...
Awesome Dyes! That B&W ebony is the nicest I have seen. Your bow has some sweet veneers too, Mike. I am sure they will all be bloodied real soon.
Pictures really doesn't do justice for this new Dye bow.
