Road over to Fort Stewart this Morning for a short hunt.Rained last night and I was hoping to find fresh sign for a good start and maybe scout some white oaks for the up coming deer season. Pulled into my honey hole and eased in the bottoms. Humid is to kind of a word for how it felt and I new I was in for a short trip after the first hour because my shirt was soaked down from sweat.
I eased around a bit and found one white oak loaded with acorns in a narrow drain that I could shoot all the way across meaning if I climbed here during deer season if one came through he would not be out of range. A sweet looking set-up . Even better when I found two sets of fresh deer tracks that had been through since the rain.
I herd some noise and spotted a hardshell possum...

I followed him a bit thinking about cracking him with a judo when he stuck his head in a tree after termites. I put the sneak on him so close even my Buddy Chris could hit this one..lol

I put my foot on his tail and he just backed out of the stump and walked away looking back. I could not shoot such a unwary critter so I eased on ..
After a mile or so loop and no pork I went across a cow oak flat and as I started between two trees I looked down just in time to dodge a strike from a Timber rattler that would have been bad. He fully lunged about 1/2 to 3/4 his body length and missed me by inches. Almost gave me a bad case of the scours. Time to go home after that. Here is a pic and a short vid of some swamp music.RC

Holy smokes! Id have to change pants right there...
Sounds like he is saying, "I don't want to waste my poison to kill you... but I WILL!!!"
Man O Man....that would send me running for home.....
I would have crapped myself. I would have left as well.
That'll give you something to think about when you're trying to go to sleep tonight !!
I'm glad he missed, too, RC!!! I wish my snake boots were a little quieter, but I reckon I am going to continue to wear them....
Stay lucky,
Bob
So where is the kill picture
Wow glad he missed! Did you shoot him?
Yikes! Thaose 'dillos carry leprosy and the rattlers are just scary! Sure glad that rattlebug did not get ya, RC!

I was at camp stewart in 73 and we killed one that was longer than the front end of an army jeep and his head was size of a baseball.thats not the place to be for chiggers will eat you up.
Glad he missed too, brother!
Great outing and even much greater outing that you made it home unscathed.
Thanks for sharing

If the snake ended up like Johnny Ringo, there is a new bow backing in the offing.
Do you wear snake boots/gaiters?
I only do sometimes if Im out in the woods. Depends on how hot it is.
Oh yeah, they dont call this the armpit of Hades for nuthin'
Oh wait....thats just what I call it.
That is one beaut of a rattler though. I dont kill any I come across. Dont blame the folks the who do though as long as they eat them.
I don`t eat them but if he is in a place I come through regular...he won`t make it.RC
Killed one checking cameras yesterday out at my club. Four an half foot 9 rattlers an button. Glad he didn't get ya!!!!!
I have had fried rattlesnake before. It's pretty good actually... I don't kill snakes either. I have always been I impressed with them even as a kid. Amazing animals!!! That one had beautiful color.
You must be quick as a Mongoose RC
That is why I wear snake boots and snake chaps when I hunt here. Glad he missed.
sure glad he missed, like reding your huntin storys and seeing your pictures, better keep one eyeball pointed down.
Glad he missed, hope you didn't. :scared:
Glad your ok RC,that thing would ruin a person day. Thanks for sharing.
Must of been good karma for letting the 'dillo go. Either that or you're one fast son of a gun!
Nice looking snake.
I kill any snake I see.
I don't care for snakes. He would make a beautiful well... anything. Glad all ended well.
Did he buzz you?? I have to wonder how many rattlers I came close to when I was growing up in Florida.
See, you kill all the hogs and they do not eat the snakes :readit:
Glad he missed!
Wow he should have gone on your :scared: he was able to fool you, should be able to fool a deer also )LOL
Man there isn't anything nice about that dude! I do not like snakes!!!!
Hope you killed it so it doesn't end up poisoning a soldier training there.. ~Steve
Glad you are ok. that snake is actually a canebrake rattlesnake not timber rattler
The heat makes sankes and wasp real pissy! Glad he missed.
Wow, I'm glad your okay. Pretty snake though.
You "dodged a strike"? I ain't buyin it. You ain't that quick anymore ol coon
RC, thanks for the hunting "tale" and glad the "tail" did not get you!! I have often thought about hunting down South, but must admit that this is what keeps from doing it!
He actaully was striking as I was backing up. No way to dodge a rattle snake bite. If I had stepped 1 step closer before seeing him he would have got me hopefully below the snake boot. I have stepped inches from them before without a rattle or any movement and have stepped several feet away and they get mega hyper. Best thing to do is wear snakeboots and watch where you put your hands. Also no squating of going to your knees without looking. I have been on pigs before and drop down low and look in front of me a a big red rat snake was there. Could have easily been worse. Biggie just cause snakes like to bite you doe`nt mean I want to join the snake bite club.RC
Bad news for sure RC!!!
As always, thanks for sharing.
Glad he missed ya RC!
RC is your huckleberry...
Yikes! :scared: :scared:
Good to hear you still have those cat like moves Robert.
would be a new world record high jump and high pitch girl scream for me.........those boys don't mess around when they are that buzzed up......
Plenty of them in there. My Dad's friend got bit by a big diamondback in old area EOD next to Liberty Airfield(demolition area)back before it was open to public hunting. Dad cut his leg and sucked the blood out and both came through fine...that is my Dad and his friend..the snake didn't make it.
Glad your ok. The ones that ever see never make nois. Till I almost step on them.

Ya let one snake bite you and before you know it, you get a reputation....
:dunno:
Messed up!...move on to the next post.
God bless,Mudd
Biggie "RC, Ya let one snake bite you and before you know it, you get a reputation...... :dunno: "... lol
I don't worry much about snakes as there are only two kinds that bother me... bigguns... and little'uns...lol
Glad you escaped without any harm to yoy RC and I'm also glad to not be able to say the same for the "no shoulders"...lol
God bless,Mudd
RC, when you jumped from that boy, how high did you clear? I think I might have set some kind of record if I saw him.
I almost got bit by a copperhead the other night while shooting my bow. I heard the pop of a strike and looked down to see Mr. Noshoulders. Bad feeling. He did not make it out of the yard.
I am glad he caught the tuff part of my work boots.
God Bless,
Nathan
I put a small stone walkway off the front porch last year which was a bad idea. On cool evenings the snakes come out from under the house and lay on it to get warm. If you live in South Ga. bottom land you will have snakes under your house. No mice though.RC
I was stationed at Fort Stewart in the early 70's. Those things were everywhere at night.
Anytime people hunt in the southern states they have to be aware of the venomous snake population. On the NWR where I hunt in the Mississippi delta, you will find eastern diamondbacks, timber rattlers, pygmy rattlers, cottonmouths, copperheads, and last but not least, the eastern coral snake. In all of the years I have hunted here I have yet to see one of the coral snakes. Close calls are common around this area, and by close calls I mean when they slam into your boots or chaps. I have probably walked past more of these critters unseen than I realize. I don't kill them when I encounter them, I simply go around them.
dang, that dude is all business. I never walk around without my snake boots on anymore. Somebody said that snakeboots are bad for my knees----- And i said, "SNAKES are bad for my knees".

I hear ya Dendy. If not wearing snake boots, I can't see what I'm looking for...on account of looking for what I don't want to see. :dunno:
