i have been trying many different bows and the one i would really like to find is a 3pc longbow. thinking schafer, talltines, or ???
most 3pc longbows are just to light for me. i like the Habu vyperkahn but dont think any 45# bows are out there. i want some thing with heavy riser like the schafer.
i like my recurves for weight, but wish they were quiet - they are just too loud.
any thoughts or recommendations?
mike
Depends on what you like. You can get an ILF with aluminum or phenolic riser in many lengths that will have a great deal of mass to them. I believe the acs aluminum risers have a decent amount of heft to them as well.
a phenolic riser might be an interesting option, but i perfer heavy woods.
Bob Lee's have a heavy riser.
But I disagree that you "cannot" quiet a recurve. I have recurves that make a quiet thump just as a longbow does. Good luck in your search..Henry
maybe my recurves are not loud, but they sound loud to me. my comparison is my Habu vyperkahn with longbow limbs. that bow is quiet!
i would love to get the schafers quiet, but seem loud to me.
Toelke lynx. He uses heavy woods and phenolic in the riser, quick and quiet.
Hey Mike,
A good option is to use brass antler knobs. I have a set if you'd like to try them. They'll increase the overall mass weight real quick and look great. I know Dave and Beth have them in stock. You want the smaller one if you'll be putting them on a longbow.
Tim
tim - i put some on the ACS but still really light compared to a schafer riser. just thinking some one must make quiet longbow limbs for a heavy schafer style riser.
I had the same thoughts and ended up putting together a 62" 45lb @28" A&H ACS CX with an actionwood 14" RC riser. Then I put a 4 arrow Eagleflights bow quiver with angle bracket and 3 arrows in it for a little more weight. It shoots great and is dead quiet.
A 64" silvertip recurve and a quiver full of arrows is a heavy bow. The only other similar setup in a longbow version might be a Bear Paw by Neil Jacobson, another Montana guy only a few miles from Dave.
Hummingbird Kingfisher 3 piece takedown w/ Kingwood riser.
Nice and heavy,
nice and beautiful,
nice and quiet,
nice and fast.
These are very nice bows.
I just finished one up with a phenolic riser. ITs my heaviest mass weight bow. and yes, dead quiet.
Try a Tomahawk Legacy series. They are not a super heavy bow but they do have a decent weight to them and they are super quiet.
Jim Gainey @Black Creek Bows will make you an all phenolic riser TD Siren. I shot one today with a "mostly" phenolic riser, and the weight was noticable. As with all Jims bows it was also very quiet.
check out hitman, his risers have some weight to them
Jack Kempf Raven.
Black Canyon bows has a longbow that fits the bill. He has a great design that is smooth and quiet. He uses Dymondwood and has just little more mass than many 3pc longbows, but not bulky looking. A couple buddies have them and I really enjoy the feel.

Pronghorns are sweet longbows. Herb will build the riser out of whatever you want, and maybe even add some lead if you want it real heavy. ;)
I'll add my Firefly to the mix. With a Kanati bow quiver it is quieter than any other bow I've shot seemingly regardless of where I have it braced.
I would agree that a Bob Lee will fill the bill.
I really like my Bob Lee recurve riser with long bow limbs they made to fit. Quieter than the recurve limbs but with same mass and grip.
MY FEDORA extreme hybrid is VERY QUIET almost as quiet as my one piece Stewart slammer and that is the quietest bow I have ever shot.
The Fedora is not the heaviest I own but is has enough weight to "Feel " right in the hand . Right now the Fedora is my GO TO hunting bow .
Two words, Morrison Shawnee.
Check out one of the new sponsors "Timberghost Bows". They have good riser mass and will shot with the best of them.
Morrison shawnee C size riser.
Dymondwood risers have good mass if you want a wood look to your bow. Most bowyers will use it if asked to. I have one I made and it is heafty.
I have a nice Spirit takedown with a riser of Bocote and Cocobolo. That combination creates a heavy riser.
Actually I prefer a lighter riser (my Pronghorn), I find that it is easier for me to hold my bow on target, after the shot, with a lighter riser; with a heavier riser I can find myself dropping my bow arm every so often after the shot.
Thanks for leads - I will start looking at some of these. Nobody shooting Schafer longbow? Talltines?
Bob Lee x 2 for a recurve grip with longbow limbs in a three piece take down. He even has one bow called "The Heavyweight". Plenty of mass to quiet down the bow and absorb vibration.
I'm finishing the bow you are talking about right now. Cocabola riser with phenolic I beam , 45 lb. double carbon limbs ,, smooth as silk and hits like a freight train. Its one of the heaviest bows I have ever built./ Sold though.
God bless you, Steve
Steve - I was getting excited until the last little note -SOLD
Not nice!!!!
I fumbled around with the same issue for months before I finally decided that the whole concept of shooting better or with more confidence using a heavier riser(typical of recurve converts)was a farse. My biggest obstacle was and still is my own mind. Carried around a Habu Death Adder that I shoot quite well for a while and then started shooting a Toelke Whip, Centaur Carbon Elite, Thunderhorn one piece Vintage, and now a Bama Expedition Hunter and so on... For true spot and stalk hunting I found the weight difference was enormous and that any lack of confidence based on mass of riser was going to be overcome! I am now recovered and quite thankful to someone who pointed this out to me.
However, if you must follow your own mind as I very much did. I think Sixby is spot on! Additionally, what I did during my spell with the mass/weight psyche was call my bowyer and see what woods or combination of wood/phenolic he had in stock or recommended for greater mass.
Just so happens that bow was recently in the Classifieds. It has a riser made of Cocobola and Ebony seperated by a accent of black phenolic. It reigns as the most beautiful bow that I ever owned and one of the heaviest...

Elmer Patton's Crow Creek Black Feather fits the bill on all accounts. It has a heavy riser, is quiet and is a deadly accurate shooting bow at 45-48#@28".
Bill
I have a Tall Tines all Macassar Ebony 3 piece longbow. Specs are: 64", 50# @ 28" and I had Brian cut the riser 3/16" past center so that any of my arrows can be shot out of the 2 different bows I have to hunt with without making any changes. (Tall Tines and Two Tracks Ambush).
My TT has very nice mass weight, especially with a 4 arrow angle mount Kanati quiver and 4 arrows, and to me, it is silent without any silencers on the string. The bow is braced at 7 3/16" and shooting a 640 grain wood arrow.
You have the bow your looking 4.Trust me.You WILLNOT find a better shooting bow than your Vyperkahn.I've been thru and shot most of the mentioned bows and none of them impressed me more than my VK.
I've had my VK for 4 years and at least 6+ other bows later.
I agree BUT my vyperkahn is a little too short 60" and a little too heavy 52+ at 30" draw. My NEW vyperkahn will be perfect but I can't have that for another year.
If someone has a lighter weight vyperkahn I will buy it!
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!
60'' VK and a 30'' draw.I feel your pain
It was perfect at 27 1/2" and my BAD form.

Get this in Cocabola , bocote, or maccassar with phenolic I beam and carbon foam core or boo core limbs and you will have your dream bow. Check this out,. 7 1/4 inch brace. 64 or 66 inch model for a stackfree 30 in draw.
God bless, Steve
Nice looking bow Steve!
How about trying heavier arrows to quiet the bow down. One of the things I love is the light carry weight of trad bows.
Steve - very nice! We will talk ....
Now I just need to find some of these bows to try.
Looks like you need to weight some of these bows to know what actual weight you are looking for. Then post the weights. Most people never get a chance to pick up one of the bows you are talking about? Ken Denton
I don't own, but I have shot, a Silvertip T/D longbow. The riser isn't particularly heavy. I'd rate it about mid range in weight for T/D longbows. You indicated you had an ACS. Changing to an aluminum riser would be about as heavy as you can get with a takedown longbow.
Stewart slammer 3 piece. Not my cup of tea but pretty heavy with diamond wood or cocobolo. BILL
Anybody shoot or shooting one of sixby's longbows?
Most all of them can become heavy. Just bought a Thunderhorn with Micarta in the riser. Its a very small risered bow but is heavy with the micarta.
I forgot about the Stewart Slammer, the riser was too heavy for me and like Bullfrog "not my cup of tea" so I moved it shortly after getting it.
I have a Hummingbird kingfisher with a lot of phenolic in the riser. It adds a lot of mass weight and makes it dead in your hand at the shot.LCH
thanks again for all the ideas. I will be selling/trading to get more in this category.....fun fun fun
