Good video showing the gutless method of breaking down an elk.
http://youtu.be/IGCAY5Amvn4
I just finished watching it, It was very informative.
Good Job..
That beats the heck out of gutting; I hope to give it a try in September. Thanks for the link!
I plan to try it as well!
I was planning on trying it last year but the elk didnt cooperate
I've been using this method for 30+ years. Haven't gutted or hung a critter since I was about 20 sumthin. Alot simpler when ur doin it alone. Works on whitetails and pigs too...
And makes be giggle everytime folks say you need a huge knife to go hunting.
good stuff if you are not packing it far. If you are take the time to de bone it. God Bless
Works great on hogs...deer too if it's legal where you hunt!
I finished my deer meat last week. This video made me hungry. 2 months to go here in TX
Thanks for sharing. Great video!
Looks like Fred was using a leatherman in the video.
That's the way we do Elk in Utah.
a couple things
A) he's done that before, he is pretty quick. It's great to watch other guys add their flair to these things
B) That leatherman could be sharper! :-)
c) You can can keep the meet clean and take the skin off. Its got to come off eventually.
d) IF you're going more then the mile, debone it, saves a bunch of weight. however, if you want to leave it on the bone, it does help to keep the meat in a more stable position to carry. The instability is fixed with a light modification to how we pack it...
e) IF we skin it and debone it, the meat will cool WAY more quickly.
I carry an emergency blanket to lay meat on and to skin, to keep it clean. and a folding boning knife to break it down correctly.
Great Video! thanks for sharing. Needed it.
This is a good how-to. I added it to my YouTube favorites. I'll never get to practice gutting on as many critters as Fred (and a lot of you others) have gotten. Seeing it done helps a guy like me a lot.
Good video...thanks
wow, and I paid for a less insightful video from a source I won't post, sure hope I can try this out this year, I have a bunch of elk just short of tied up right now, hopefully they stick around for 19 more days so I can try to get a shot off and give this a try:)
Pretty impressive, and no mess.

excellent - we started doing this around 32 years ago when we got serious backpack hunting - that thing should go into bowhunter ed - fun and productive

great video.... my only objection to it is that I watched it as I was getting ready for bed. Oh how I hate a sleepless night.....
I've gone gutless on the past couple of elk. It is the only way to go.

PS 2 weeks, 4 days and 10 hours.
im wondering how does that multi-tool get through the bone so easy?
He is not going through the bone he is finding a joint, cutting cartilage, tendons and other connecting tissue. :archer2:
Too bad I enjoy organ meat...im stuck gutting lol
I am with fishfinder - I like getting the heart and liver - and after watching meat eater show I want the caul fat too! gonna try wrapping the heart in it like he did!
Gredt video - but I am usually close enough to a road to drag, only done this when hunting out a boat.

Great video, been using that method for the last 10 years.
It is easier to get the heart/liver after the critter is broken down. Was planning on giving the caul fat wrapped heart in the dutch oven a try this fall after watching the meat eater show.
Another guy leaving the ribs for the Buzzards!
Another thing I have heard about this method is it lowers the spread of CWD into new areas since the spine is left in the field.
Good video thanks for sharing.
Great girl. I have used this method when butchering my domestic goats

Fantastic video! I may process my own whitetail this year... if I'm able to get one!
Tried it and loved it, I don't ever have to gut and saw up an elk again. Faster, cleaner, less flies and hornets, less work, and less weight to pack out. Awesome!
We do very much the same thing only we bone it all out before packing it. We also strip the ribs out.
Nothing left but bones and guts.
Mike
Excellent video. Always good to review something like this just before or during the new hunting season. Gets me ready for the job at hand, not to mention picking up new suggestions and ideas. Thanks for sharing.
How good does this method work in the dark with a head lamp and mesquitoes eating you alive? I'm thinking on trying it back in the swamp next week.
That was outstanding , too bad all I ever shoot is deer. I just gut them, then hang them at camp and break them down to boneless meat and in the cooler they go
Here is Mr Warren's efforts.

Warren can do it.

I wished more people would have the chance to learn methods like this. Every year I seem to have to teach people how to take care of their game. I don't mind teaching in fact I enjoy it but I don't think most people realize how much work can be involed in taking care of a elk. Anything that can speed up the cooling and proccessing of the animal the better IMO. Yesterday I helped a friend take his frist elk. Once the elk was on the ground he had no idea how to deal with a large animal on the ground. After we were done he was amazed on how quick we got the elk cut up and back to the truck.
