Title: First time stumping
Post by: pseman on August 06, 2007, 02:52:00 PM
I was at a 3D shoot last weekend and picked up a couple of judo points to try some stumping. I am relatively new to this trad thing so I figured I'd try it out. I hear many on hear talk about how fun it is and what good practice it is so I thought I would give it a try.
Well, it sounded like fun but WOW! I loved it. It was so much more fun than shooting a pie plate 50 times. There was no shortage of targets, a pine cone here, an old beer can there, and best of all was the fallen trees with rotten limbs sticking up in the air. They really explode when you hit them. I am officially hooked! All this in 30 minutes spent in the woodlot behind my house walking in a big circle. I can't wait until I can get away to the hunting land to do some stumping/scouting.

90% of my shooting is stumping

Cool isn't it?        Similarly, I did my first 3-D shoot this weekend.  Met some fellow Trad-Gangers there and had a great time.

So, did you get that brace issue cleared up?

Way to go Mark!  Sounds to me like you got in a group with Andy this weekend.  He loves his Judo's in the off season.  Enjoyed shooting with you.  Hope to do it again soon.

Always wanted to try it..one day I'll get around ti picking some up!

Anyone do it w/ alum arrow?  I can't imagine shooting things like stumps and what not and not coming home without a quiver full of bent arrows heh.

I was having a hard time with my 8-yr old boy A.J. he would get upset because of his grouping. I gave him a couple a judo's and threw a paper cup in the yard and told him ta try ta put his arrows inside it from 10yd's. Boom-Boom... It works wonders on your mental abilities and my pocket book... I told him if he could do it at 15yd's I'd get him a new bow, 1 shot! I held up my end of the bargin. I won't make deals like that to often. You won't regreat buy'ing some judo's.

deadbolt, you dont just shoot stumps, around here, all the stumps are hardwood, so I shoot pinecones, coke cans, milk jugs,  juice cartons, stuff like that, I like kicking a can as far as I can, then shooting it where ever it lands

I was hitting very good at 15-25yds. I seemed to focus in on the leaves, pine cones, etc better than a bullseye and my usually present target panic didn't seem nearly as bad. It gives me confidence because the shots are in the woods in similar situations that I might encounter while hunting.

I may go walk around and do some shooting again after supper tonight.

pseman, another great thing is take a walk with a pocket full of balloons. As ya walk blow them up and set them out in different shot situations, under a branch, dead tree hanging on a limb a few feet off the grond etc. Walk a circle backk to your house grab the bow and start hunting balloons, completing your circle back to the house. The nice thing is ya can pick up the broken balloon and they all go in your pocket again, just a different twist on stumping. Shawn

I like that idea Shawn!  You'll know for sure if you scored.  And if you have a buddy with you there might not need to be a discussion on who hit it.

Deadwood: I've used aluminum arrows (2016 and the like) with Judos for years, stump shooting in northern Michigan and NW Ontario, and don't think I've ever bent one. They can take a heap of stumping. Just don't shoot at obviously hard stuff (rocks, oak logs, etc.). I shoot leaves, pine cones, tufts of weeds, old rotten stumps, dirt hills, you name it.

I haven't been out recently because I didn't have a bow quiver bracket for my latest bow (a Dalaa), but one is on the way to me. I'll be shooting in Ontario later this month.

It is a great way to shoot yer bow.

When the dandelions go to fluff/seed, they are great field targets too.

i like to carry a fanny pack with a pair of pliers and/or srcew driver for digging out those arra's i put in the solid stumps.

also like to use rubber blunts cause they bounce off trees real nice when i miss those little chipmunks.

lately been making up stump arra's out of dowels. cheaper than using good shafts.

try a few looooong shots too! fun to see how close you can get to a target way out there.

The pods on "bear grass", local yokel for a form of yucca, are quite impressive when they explode and the seeds go flying. Great for replenishing the species too. They're about the size of an egg. Now if I could only hit'em a little more often.........

I read where someone had set up a 'bottle shoot' in their woods.  He hung foam filled plastic pop bottles from the trees at different distances from the trail and would shoot at them from different angles along the way.

We always play a game where a person picks something too shoot at(like a particular knot on a stump, leaf ..etc) and whoever hits closest to the mark gets to pick the next shot. Sorta like playing horse   with a basketball.

Edit: Forgot to mention "Knock the nock" is fun while stumpin too.   :bigsmyl:

Once in awhile you even find a Frankentree like this one:  8^).

Here's my pal Dan Feaster diggin' one out.

And sometimes you even find some Ginseng patches:
