Hey guys, I'm shooting a 60 pound Northern Mist Baraga fastflight longbow. My draw is 28" and I'm shooting 29" Goldtip Trad 55/75 arrows. I installed 100 grain brass inserts and been shooting 145 grain points. I bought a test kit and shot heavy points tonight. All seem to shoot well from 145 to 225. I like the super heavy point weight. I like the 225's. Should I stick with a super beefy tip weight for penetration? My bow likes them. I'm a hunter first and foremost :deadhorse: and won't shoot at game past 20 yards and bear under 15.
My bow is similar---same draw weight on a NorMist Whisper, but with a short draw I am only pulling 54 #. I have 265 grains on 27 inch griz stik alaskans (with the 80 grain brass inserts). Did you try bare shafts with the various weights? Will get the best penetration with the most stable arrow flight.
every bow i own i tune with 225 grain heads for the FOC % for increased penetration
For what you want It for, I would Stick with the Heavy heads.
Optimum flight should be the 1st objective. Typically prefer that my BH's are tuned 5 yards beyond my maximum effective hunting range.
The 325 gn up front should yield ~25% EFOC and ~10.2 gpp...not a heavy arrow.
..but a lethal one for deer and blackies.
Would estimate that the heavier arrow set-up would serve you quite well. Don't know the shelf cut-out on your Northern Mist, but if cut to center, I would wish to evaluate a 250 gn point.
i am a great believer that high point weight will take care of a lot of tuning issues...for the ranges you are shooting (which is the effective range for a lot more bowhunters than will admit it) you cannot go wrong with the 225 grain broadheads
