I just placed an order for a Contender longbow with Allen Boice at Liberty Bows and was wanting some Ideas on different wood combos.
I was wondering if maybe some of you could post some pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Allens yew and myrtle are second to none !
great choice on a Liberty mate !
Yew and myrtle grace both my Liberty's. I predict you will love that bow! I know your experience with Allen willbe first rate
Ask Allen if he still has some of the fiddleback Myrtlewood for limb veneers. He made me an Edge with this wood and the handle is Macassar Ebony...love this bow!
I have 3 chiefs....glad I bought them when I did! Wish I could get a few more.
All three are cocobola and yew...no you wont like that combo, :) . Afterall I don't want him running out on me LOL! kidding of course! I think you'll like just about anything he could put on a bow....not to mention they shoot great!
I have a Contender. Will try to post a picture late today. It has a cocobolo handle with yew limbs. Like it. This bow has some magic in it.
Ive had a few Contenders, they are amazing bows, so far the best mild r/d bow ive owned.
I'm with AKDan. I have two Chief elites and wish I had more. Both bamboo cores, one with yew veneers, the other with myrtle veneers. I like the myrtle better, but it's a close call. Beautiful cocobolo risers on both. Excellent bows in workmanship and shootability.
I have a Contender Elite with yew lams, boo core & cocabolo riser. Great bow.

I don't think Allen has made an ugly bow. I currently have 2 English models. cocobola risers with Myrtle veneers. I've owned 3 others one with black glass cocobola riser English which last I heard was in Michigan. Couldn't handle the weight anymore. All the above were bamboo cored. The other 2 were English as well both yew cored clear glass over the yew with cocobola risers. My son has one in New Jersey and the other went away due to the weight, Pennsylvania if I remember correctly. If I was to order another it would be ebony riser black glass with carmalized bamboo core probaly string follow English or clear glass over bamboo with cocobola riser and overlays. I'm not a big fan of clear glass over the darker veneers because imperfections in the glass, milky and streaks, really detract from the beauty of the veneers.
My English is a cocobolo riser with myrtle veneers as well. With bamboo core.
I have two contender take downs both 64" and a 1 piece 66" and love them all! great bow.
I've got a beautiful and pristine Liberty Eagle, 66", 72# at 28". It's a work of art, for sure, but too heavy for me, and y'all are going to see it in the classifieds pretty soon.
I have had a few Libertys with MaCassor ebony and coco bolo risers. The tiger Myrtle veneers are very nice and so is the Yew for limbs. The black Ebony risers look very good as well with either of these limb coices.
Contender here 64" 56# Yew and boo with cocobolo riser.....Very nice, Just started setting it up.

This is my Edge. It has fiddleback myrtlewood limb veneers, macassar ebony handle section, and love the yew wood overlay accents. Such a great shooting bow.
I just put in an order with Allen for a Contender! Would love to resurrect this thread to get some more wood ideas. Thanks!
I have one of Allen's Edge's. it's a great bow. I shoot over 600 arrows out of it a week and it still looks as good as new.
Edge here also, can we say smooth...bocote handle, bambo limbs.
I've had a couple of Allen's bows that I got used. The fit and finish is the best I have seen on any bow.; It is the quality I have attempted to emulate. You will not find any bow made by anyone that has better quality in workmanship, fit and finish. Including yours truly.
God bless you all, Merry Christmas, Steve
I was thinking about the Liberty Classic. I like reverse handle bows and always wanted to try a string follow bow.
What is Mr. Boice's wait time is?

I had an English for 4 years as my only bow. It was really a great bow but I went down the purer Hill style slippery slope.
The English had a little hand shock which I liked.
I have a Chief elite and an English. as said, superb craftsmanship. His Myrtle is the best. Allen is a great guy.
I just became the owner of a Liberty Contender yesterday. 64" 51# @28" Cocobolo Riser with Yew Limbs (core and lams) Its a very well made bow, and doesn't look too shaby either. Now all I have to do is get used to it. The pix are from my First Shot today over on the Stickbow....KYArcher (http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag129/scott_stubbs1/FirstShotDec182012002.jpg) (http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag129/scott_stubbs1/FirstShotDec182012001.jpg)
Frank, right now Allen's build time is 5-6 weeks.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will call him after Christmas.

I have a Chief Elite with Tiger stripe Myrtle, its the smoothest LB Ive ever shot! Its so quiet I usually get a second shot when I miss. HAHA
Got a little better acquainted with my Liberty today. Its a very nice shooting bow, those Yew limbs draw smooth! (http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag129/scott_stubbs1/FirstShotDec192012003.jpg) (http://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag129/scott_stubbs1/FirstShotDec192012006.jpg)
Mines getting a shakedown in the md woods. So far the seers winning. Great stumping country if nothing else lol
well no east coast shakedown for the liberty, she looked good hanging in the hardwoods ;) saw few deer.
KY mines also yew limbs and cocobola riser....hard combo to beat!
My lefty Contender Elite.
