40 years ago, an Army surgeon took some torn up cartilage from my right knee. The passing years with more tears and a lot of arthritic bone spurs created a bone-on-bone situation and pretty much dictated a new knee.
Surgery went well and I've been concentrating my efforts on getting it to flex more and extend more fully. Lot more work than I thought it was going to be.
Yesterday, I walked part of the way around our lake and was feeling really good. Stopped at my bow rack as I came in and decided to string a bow and do some exercise draws. I always use a stringer for my recurves, but usually string my longbows just push-pull, especially the light ones.
Couldn't do it! Ok, get the cup and block stringer out and do it right. Then I tried drawing my light, smooth 62" 44# Lost Creek Judge. How embarrassing! I finally made it to anchor, but barely. Looks like I better make drawing a bow a part of my daily physical therapy.
Man,when you get old it fades so fast and comes back so slowly :(

Looks like my left knee. Good luck in your rehab, I hope it goes well for you. I found that riding a stationary bike was the best exercise for me along with a lot of stretching.
Hey Ron, that will be a nice looking scar. Curve haas some character to it. I just have a straight line, well three of them actually. I agree with habu, stationary bike is very good and "all" of the prescribed exercises at least twice a day, three, four times is better. Good luck.
That's what my PT is telling me too. Got a line on a loaner and hope to get the first of the week.
Thanks for the good wishes.

Oh, so true!! Keep at it............you'll get there!
I got both knees replaced four years ago.Best thing I ever did also the most painfull.Stick with your therapy-it will pay off in the future.Good luck....
Wish you a speedy recovery.
I think I am also about due for one and seeing where they cut you it is scareing me a little.
Best to you
John
Baseball fan?
This slow recovery stuff stinks. I am still doing PT for my ankle, and needed none the last time I broke one. (37 years ago...)
At least this is stuff that heals!
Killdeer :banghead:
Best of luck for a quick recovery, Ron..
I've had 4 different surgeries, I get more "gunshy" everytime.. Looking at yours gives me the willies..
Got my new knee a few years ago -- old baseball injury.
i have to do some gym work a few times each week to keep it from getting weak. My artificial hip -- another old sports injury -- is the same way. It seems like keeping an artificial joint strong takes more dedication than keeping a natural joint strong.
I remember not touching a bow during the first couple of months of each recovery and I was pretty weak when I started shooting again. Shooting strength will come back with use.
Good luck with the new knee. Have faith. Every day will be a little better.
Hey guys, don't let the incision scare you. The surgeon wanted to follow the old scar tissue from the previous surgery. That first one was a young major's very first knee surgery. If they don't have to repair someone else's screw-up, they do a nice neat job.
Hope you get the knee better, thats a big nasty looking cut hope you get better soon. Chad
Ouch!!!! Take it easy that looks painful.
Speedy recovery to you Ron. You know that scar is almost a true D shape "pretty cool".

Killie, how on earth did you break your ankle when you were only 6 months old??? :saywhat: :saywhat:
Chicks dig scars..
Try and get one like that at a Los Angeles tattoo and body modification shop !
My Mom & sister have both had this surgery so I know it's not a fun recovery. Hang in there though. It'll get better.
Looks like a nice R/D scar to me.
Take good care.
I thought I had the ugliest knee I have ever seen. I have had 3 replacements in the same knee. But I have to give you top spot, your knee is uglier than mine. Good luck, work hard.

Cliff that made it all worthwhile :biglaugh:
I was thinking you need to have a bowyer put that wave into a riser! Good luck with the recovery. I helped my brother through part of his recovery and I know what a rough time it can be at times.
Had hernia surgery about a year ago. I am amazed at how the scar has disappeared. These modern-day surgeons are amazing. That scar might end up looking like a faint scratch in a couple of years. Best wishes for a happy healthy rehab!
That surgeon was probably using a single beveled scalpel! Hope everything goes great for you Ron!!
Glenn
My wife has a pair like that. If that stems from the service be sure to file a claim with the VA!!!
Hap
I hope you have a very speedy recovery. On the bright side "Chicks dig scars". Just wear shorts every day and you will have 'em begg'in for an explaination.
Best of luck to ya.
here i am shooting my bow after my knee replacement a year ago this past month. Its get better, hang in there and work hard on your PT.

Looking at the bright side... tatoos are "in" and that one was earned by a real man!
You have to admit it ain't easy to fit a scar that size around a match-stick leg ;)
Yep those bow muscles go quick.
Good luck with your rebound....
I need to get a new one also. Just been putting it off. I'm 61 hoping it will make it better. My wife says when it gets bad enough I'll want to go get it done and she is ALWAYS right!
Good Luck Ron
archery ladies dig big scars Ron... :biglaugh:
Well, if Obama care stays and your doc finds himself looking for a new job he can always try stitching softballs.
Hang in there, it'll get better.
Oh man... Thanks for posting this. I have very poor feet which affect my knees. I am 40. Doc told me I am in for a double knee replacement some time in my life BUT the best thing is for me to keep the weight down, exercise, and don't kneel or squat. Seeing the pics of your knee has inspired me to keep working at this. Good luck in your recovery!
Just do everything your PT tells you to do and everything will work out fine. I had a total knee replacement Jan 28th 2011 and I was back to work and doing everything except running and kneeling on it which is a great big NO NO by march 12th 2011. The Dr said that I made such good progress by following all my instructions to the letter. Just do not go home and sit on the couch. Keep it working and you will be fine. I have NO PROBLEMS at all with mine.
Makes for a real good shark attack story.
I've got two cuts on mine. lol
I know a tattoo artist who can turn that curvy scar into a sweet looking recurve!
Hope the recovery goes well.
