Hello, trying to find out some information about Kentucky. Myself and hunting buddy are planning on hunting in Kentucky and not sure about any hidden rules, public hunting areas or would it be better to go with a guide? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks Trey
Need more details. Where you going?
First thing to do is check the website for the Kentucky Deptartment of Fish and Wildlife.
There you can find the regs, seasons, license info and public areas.
Lot's of "rules", but I don't know about them being "hidden", I guess. Our hunting regs are extensive though and can be somewhat complicated.
I would try one of our many good public hunting areas before I would hire a guide. But, that's just me and I'm kinda cheap(by necessity). Try Yellowbank, LBL, and some of our WMAs on the banks of one of our public lakes, namely Green River Lake and Taylorsville Lake WMAs.

Have hunted & had good luck on both these WMA's..
Kentucky is blessed to be one of the few States whose deer season starts early enough to take a buck in velvet - and some great ones at that!
Looking forward to a 2013 hunt there in Western part of State.

I have killed several deer at Green River as well. It's a great place to hunt.
KY has a lot of great WMAs. I hunted Taylorsville a lot when I lived in Louisville. It is good but it is pretty close to large popoulation center. I'd go fo r something a little farther south and west. There are some great ones around the Ohio R. Check out Higginson-Henry WMA.
I live in Western Ky and plan on spending several 3-4 day hunts at LBL (land between the lakes) in one of their backcountry camping spots. The regulations are pretty straight forward. Plenty of good public land.
If going to a WMA, focus on the western ones. Whole state was hit hard by blue tongue in recent years, and eastern WMA's and eastern part of the state has not bounced back as well. The ones mentioned above are good ones to start. I hunt some public, and private land, and the best time to kill a quality deer, is the first 2 weeks of season while they ae still in their summer pattern.
LBL is the best public land that I know I of. I know a few guys that took some very nice bucks there with a bow. If you do your part you shouldnt need a guide but theres lots of good places down there if you choose that route. Kentucky's regs are pretty detailed and extensive so there shouldn't be any hidden ones. Hunting Kentucky is a blast! Good luck!

Not to many rules and reg in KY. We have some great WMA's and public land hunting. I hunt mostly public land. Id say a guide is out of the question.
Thanks for all the input. Was online looking at all the WMA's. Was looking at the Big Rivers WMA. Anyone hunting this area?
