I was wondering how many of us have missed deer in 2006 hunting season?? I missed a nice 6 pt. at about 8yds. You guessed it Buck Fever. Lets hear details of what happened.
-
I didnt get any shots, I didnt go out much. Hopefully I'll be out more next year
-
Didn't miss. 4for4 all does. straight down, 32yrds, 5yrds, 8yrds. I did get a chance at a nice 10pt. but he caught me at full draw and bolted.
-
didn't miss a deer, but i did miss a blesbok at 20 yards. i made up for the miss though!
>~Rob~>
-
Missed a doe opening day at 15 yards  and then missed another one the last day at 25 yards :smileystooges:
-
I had no deer shots with the longbow this year. I did miss a fox at 10 yards.
-
First week of bow season, I missed a pretty nice buck at about 8 yards (he ducked, arrow went right over his back), later that afternoon, same place, same result....put an arrow right over the back of a doe....
My luck did change. I ended up with two nice bucks and a couple of javelina by the end of season.....
-
I missed a little 6pt. I was 30' up a tree and the deer was just about 10-12 yards. Right over his back. :banghead: I should have practiced more at that height.

Keep the stories coming.
-
only 5
-
Missed my fair share, I think the total was 3. At least I got shots this year. Last year, ( first trad season) I never let an arrow fly at a deer, only turkey.
jake
-
Missed 2 - shot 2. No wounded deer.
-
I went 5 for 5 this year.
-
I missed 3 does. Killed one at 23 yards. Missed one at 13 yards. I was 25 ft up a tree shot right over her back. Missed 2 more does on the last day one at 18 yards and one at about twenty. Same scenario - right over their backs. I committed myself to practice more from an elevated position. This was my first year hunting with trad gear, so I am still learning. I have been shooting instinctively so I think my brain was seeing the line of site distance instead of the true yardage.
-
First day of the season, 15 minutes in stand. Someone/thing disturbed the bedding area and I had 7 deer within 20yds in a matter of seconds, all of them frozen and looking back at the bedding area. I grabbed my bow and picked a doe at 12yds, shot over her by a foot or so and under shot the farther doe by about the same. Guess my brain was still focused on which one was a better angle.
-
No shots this year.
-
Well... This is one thread I'd rather not be able to post on. LOL I have hunted hard this year, spending as much or more time chasing whitetails as I ever have. I have never taken a deer with my longbow and this was going to be my year.
Season opens here on October first... which was a Monday this year. I wrangled my way into a day off but didn't see anything. I didn't realize it then but in retrospect that was the day that set the tone for my season -- thus far. My second hunting opportunity was the first Saturday of October, to borrow a famous phrase "it was a day that will live in infamy" -- at least in my mind, memory and dreams!
At about 8:30 that morning a really nice buck decided to check a scrape right by my ground blind. He was an 8 point with about an 18-20" inside spread. His tines were not real tall (6-8" G2's), but he was a real nice buck. The sequence of events will forever be etched in my mind. He approached from behind the blind walked past my blind at about 20 yards and turned to cross in front of me at what I thought was about 20 yards (my first mistake -- I stepped it off at 15 yards.)
As he made his turn and proceeded into my shooting lane he stopped about a step short of being far enough into the opening for a shot. The tension built as his sixth sense kicked in and he gave the whole area a once over. I had the bow up and the string tensed, waiting for the shot. As he finally began to step clear, I began to draw the bow. That's when he vapor-locked and froze!
As the bow came to full draw he turned and looked straight at me. I hit anchor and failed to maintain my concentration. The excitement of the moment and the tension got the best of me. As I released he ducked and my arrow flew high. It sailed just over his back and he bounded off to about 50 yards and proceeded to walk around the blind. It would turn out to be the most exciting moment of 2006.
I consoled myself with the fact that there was a whole lot of deer season left. However, that day turned out to be the only time in 2006 that I even had the chance to put tension on my string. No other shot opportunity has presented itself -- thus far.
The good news is that our season is not yet over. I have until February 28th, and I haven't given up yet! I'm back at it again this Saturday...
-
I had mixed results also. 8pt buck, two does killed at less than 10 yards. Couple does missed at 15-20 yards. No wounded animals. Can't wait to get after those hogs and goats in TX.
-
I missed the same 10 point buck two different times. Both times he heard the shot and did some Jet Li/Matrix move and dropped to the ground as the arrow flew over him. One time he even watched it clipping the hair off his back. Third time I got a shot at him I aimed low. That time it connected although not the shot I wanted. He started to spin as the arrow hit and it took the energy and penetration out of the shot. A second arrow finished him off. Other than that I passed up several other chances at bucks. One was a real nice 10 but I never take 2 breeder bucks from the same area in the same year.
-
Friend took my to LaVaca county TX, his wife's boss's porperty. Hunt for does only. Two stand locations, so I picked the upper one. Had five deer in front of me. Nice 10 point 3 1/2 yr old buck at 12 yards broadside. Drew on him twice but was there fro does ONLY. He chased them around in front of me like a pony ride. Finally, had a mature doe stop in a spot about 13 yards out between two finger sized twigs. Draw-anchor-release- and what was that last part, oh yeah follow through. Knew I forgot something. The top twig is vibrating and the arrow is over the does back in the ground.
Deer scatter about 5 -10 yards. Then doe number two comes walking back to the same spot looking at those pretty orange fletching sticking out of the ground. She enters the same window between the twigs at about 13 yards. Point blank. Right. Easy shot, Right. Step 1-2-3- what was 4. Oh yeah FOLLOW THROUGH. Lower twig is vibrating and arrow number two is sticking in the ground about 3 feet fron the first one. This was enough for the ladies and they left. One started to come back from straight behind me just to make me feel real bad about the whole thing. Man I Love hunting Whitetails.
This year Deer - 2; Me - 0

Didn't miss.
-
Well, 3 clean misses- 3 clean kills. Good first season with trad gear.
-
Missed some, brought some home. Nothing wounded, I seem pretty consistant. Either I bring em home, or end up shaking my head in wonder. Generally try not to dwell on the missed shots, but I do vividly remember the night I was going to get my 1st double. Pin-wheeled the 1st doe at 18 yards, then being the champ I am, flat missed the second doe 15 min. later at 7 yards. Go figure!!!!
-
killed a 7 pt at 12 yards, a doe at 22, pig at about 8 yds and had a doe come in down wind and string jumped me pretty bad at 15 yds ( a miss is a miss) she had winded me and was tryin to ease out of there... that was with my longbow, we have another Month and a half left and I have a tag left and will try and finish out with my recurve.
-
Yes, I missed a doe at 18 yards. I simply peeked at the shot and shot high over her back. I did take 2 very nice bucks and another doe, so all was not lost. Those misses seem to stay with me longer though :-)
Dan
-
I had a 15 yard shot at a doe when I was hunting with the Little Delta Bow. I was in my blind and the top limb hit the top of the blind and nearly jerked the bow out of my hand. Thought I'd torn the top out of the blind.
I watched my bamboo arrow sail about 2" over her back and she jumped and stopped again at 20 yards. I didn't take another shot, she had won that round.

-
I had a good year for me. One Doe at 10 yards. One Doe at 12 yards and a 7 pointer at around 28 yards. All were quick and clean kills. I did miss a button buck at 5 yards. Right over his little back.
-
last year was my first trad year and i got a 4x4 on my first hunt with a recurve . i guess it went to my head because this year i shot over the backs of three deer one of wich was the biggest buck ive ever shot at he was a beautiful 5x5 . i guess my beginners luck is gone .
-
I miss some every year. This year I even had a witness for one - a 12 yard shot at a basket 8 pt management deer. Timing shot on him walking with Troy looking over my shoulder, shot right in front of him.
-
Early in the season I watched many deer pass anywhere from 4-30 yds. I had a very large 8 point stand less than 10 yds away hidden behind a small cedar, spooked him while reaching for my bow. I enjoyed just sitting there observing. Late in the season I finally decided I was ready to take one, needless to say when the time came....I missed...it was a doe at 18 yds. I rushed the shot and don't even remeber picking a spot. We still have until the end of February.
-
Me!
-
Two missed...
a buck in November and doe in January....
-
Missed 4 from 4, three on the same morning! But had a ball doing it too.

-
I am declaring myself the winner.
I don't care to talk about it .... I will say that you should never ever ever shoot at anything that you don't want to hit!
I didn't wound any deer or elk; I did make perfect shots on both.
But the number of misses? Well- if anyone beats me; I will relinquish the crown :notworthy:
-
Shot over the back on a huge bull elk, and missed a shot on a doe that was looking at me and spun away before the arrow got there. The elk was just panic on my part - no excuses. The shot on the doe I should have just let down on.
I did make good on two whitetail bucks though, so I had a good season. Best part was nothing wounded.
-
I was 2 for 2 this year with the Recurve. 22 yards and 8 yards.
-
Well, I will add to the list, reluctantly...
shot over one doe at 16 yards from a stand, clean miss. Skinned another in the front leg/brisket area, just some hair, and little blood. I did manage to actually HIT one, shot a real nice doe with 3 days left in the season. Hit was just in front of front leg, caught both lungs, and was done in a hundred yards.
-
Never even got to draw back on one.
-
I missed 6, yes 6, all at under 20 yds, and one that I called back to less than 15, 4 times! all over their backs and luckily I never touched a hair, So guys grab the mallet, I'm ready and very deserving of the "biggest Loser" crown, :(
:knothead:
-
I had a slow year and only had one shot. Just as I started drawing my bow on a spike at 10 yds he looked up at me. I forgot to aim low and he ducked my arrow.
-
I only had one opportunity for a shot...took it...and made a clean miss. She was a doe fawn and I shot under her at 25yards. Pat
-
Missed 3 and killed 3 no wounds.I missed a 8 point at 10 yards he didn't know what happened and I killed him at 23 yards.Missed a doe at 6 steps I still ant figured that one out,I just had to laught.
Pappy
-
I missed a doe at 15 yards. She was real nervous and knew that something was not right, but she finally settled down and offered a quartering away shot while feeding. She dropped and spun when I released, and I watched the arrow fly right between her ears. She ran about 25 yards or so and stopped and stood looking back at where she had been. She finally bedded down about 40 yards from me, and I watched her until she spooked when my son came to meet me at my stand.
-
I missed two different 8pts. and a doe, but shot over the bucks and under the doe. Still hoping to get one or two more before season ends though.
-
Missed 3, two in the same mourning, still can't
figure out how.
-
I shot over one whitetail doe.
I missed a mulie doe when she turned to face me exactly at release...passed harmlessly beside her. And then to top it all off I had really nice four by four mulie spook just as I released on him. All in all it was my most successful season ever. This year I finally got to at least release an arrow at a deer with my longbow and I did manage to collect four cottontails.
-
Here was my season of shots.
1. Hammered a doe at 24 yards opening day. Passed on a bunch.
2. Missed a turkey at 22 yards in pouring down rain when my bow torqued in my hand. Killed a tree 10 inches high and to the left!
3. 30 minutes later killed a turkey at 18 yards and watched it drop.
4. Rattled in a 6 pointer and let him walk. 2nd sequence, rattled in a coyote ???? Squeaked him in the final few steps by sucking on the back of my hand and nailed him at 30 yards.
5..Killed a 200+ pound whitetail who forgot to grow a equally monsterous rack at 10 yards. He spun around 180 degrees and fell as the first shot blew through him (really)! When he got to his feet, I placed a second arrow right behind the shoulder. He stumbled 2 steps toward a very steep ravine and I placed a 3rd arrow into the same spot. The third arrow through the boiler dropped him in his tracks...this time for good. Overkill, sure, but I didn't have to drag him out of that holler.
6. After gun season, skewred a sapling in front of a little broken rack buck. Got good penetration. The buck hung around, but I couldn't make myself shoot at him a second time. I guess my lack of focus on the first shot was due to the fact I was indecisive about shooting at him in the first place.
-
Oh yeah,
I forgot my first critter of 2006.
I shot a hog in Texas at 12 yards. He ran a circle into the brush then ran back out onto the sendero and died 3 feet from where I was standing. A few bunnies also went to heaven on that trip :) .
-
Missed a coyote at 30yards, and a deer at about 20. I won't tell you about the shot with my "nerf" arrow.
-
I missed 2 does. One was at 14 yards ( didn't pick a spot right over her back) Missed another one at 9 yards. Arrow deflected off a little limb. My father-in-law was behind me when I missed. I gave my compound to him when I got into traditional archery. All he said was that sucks do you want your compound back!! All I could say is no thanks I like having fun!!!!!!!!! Those were the only 2 shot I had all season. Maybe next year I'll connect with something.
-
I've been fortunate this year. I have taken 3 shots, all at does. The first shot was right at sundown. Small doe at 12 yards. Somehow I managed to shoot low and I think I grazed her on the back of the leg. Two very small dots of blood on the arrow. She went about 40 yards, fed a few minutes and bedded down. When I came down from my stand I shined a flashlight on her and she was still bedded looking at me. Midday the following day I went back and took a look. There was no blood in the bed where she had layed. She was a young doe (50lbs), I think the event confused her and she bedded down next to a deadfall thinking she was hidden. I feel sure she survived. The other 2 shots were 18 & 27 yards through both lungs. Both deer fell within 80 yards.
-
I missed at least two of them... a roe buck -indeed it was a bit far away but I tried- and a wildboar. This one was simply my fault, no more than 20 meters or so, but my shot was a bit high and the boar made a string jump; the result was... I missed!!
Best regards from Spain.

Missed does on both 2005 and 2006 opening days in NJ. I was kind of bummed out because both years my son was with me. In 05 he pats my shoulder and tells me,"It's ok Dad you'll get other chances." In 06 he tells me he thinks that he is bad luck for me because I missed deer on opening days 2 years in a row when he was with me. I explained to my son that he most certainly is not bad luck for me. I just get a bit nervous when it comes time for shooting at deer, but it sure is fun and exciting for both of us. I could not ask for a better hunting partner.
-
Hmmm... define "miss".
Do you have to actually launch an arrow? In that case, I missed a nice spike when I shot right over his back. Seems to be a constant in this thread. I've been wracking my brain reliving that shot ever since, and can't make myself believe he ducked. At least then I would have an excuse. But I don't think he did.
But the ones that I "missed" most were the two nice 6 points that came in while I was only half-way up the tree in my climber with my bow still lying peacefully on the ground. Now that's a miss!
Bill
-
I missed the dreaded 8yd. shot.
-
Missed 2 but my arrows sure flew nice !
ROOTER
-
I did (after getting two for two) I shot right over her back - so close it scared the heck out of her. I was sitting on a bucket and she didn't give me a chance to stand so i shot from ther and forgot to hold low for the upward angle. "Hello, Goodbye, I say Goodbye." (Rather a clean miss than a bad or marginal hit though.)
-
Missed two bucks six pointers. First one A limb got in front of my arrow.Second one I choked.
-
Me...
-
missed my buck at 10 yds. He ran off but came back in 5 minutes, missed him at 20 yds. He ran off but came back shortly at 35yds. I nailed him. Guess he was just to close.
-
Missed a four point muley at 6yds right below me on a rock cliff. Should have made the adjustment. Shot about 2 inches over his back gave me another shot at about 30 yds. didn't take it.
-
Stag;
Its good to hear there is some archery hunting in Europe. I was in Germany for 7 yrs 1985-92 and could not bowhunt.
Pinney;
Two two does I missed with 1-2 mintues both flew perfect. Best I'd seen. Perfect arrow flight. but wrong spot.
-
If you wanted to talk about missing deer, you should of asked, How many did you miss last year?
This was my first year of really hunting with my longbow, the year before I took it for a few walks in the woods. This last year I got a great opportunity to hunt whitetails and well, I missed 12, got 2, but missed 12. They were clean misses. Had a blast, the problem was I looked at the whole deer instead of picking a spot. I learned a lot, espically this, when I pick a spot watch out!
>>>Tim------->
-
I missed more than I would like to talk about. Total of 3 all were clean misses....
-
Heres the one I missed no excuses I just missed completely :knothead:

Here's one I didn't miss.

-
I missed a lot, was 2 for 2 last year (my fist year in trad) and thought this stick bow thing was pretty easy. Well, multiple misses this year and had to fill the freezer late with the big gun. All but one of my misses were high, perfect line, just high. The one miss that wasn't high I hit the top limb on the pop up and missed low. I think the high misses were a combination of deer squatting at the sound of the release and me not picking a spot low enough (or just bad concentration). My spot is now the heart or about an inch back from heart.
-
Killed a button buck first day of season. Didn't shoot at another deer until Kansas the week of Thanksgiving. Largest buck i've ever seen in the woods. I let him walk by with his nose in a doe's rear at appx 8 steps. My brain just froze looking at him. LOL I gathered myself after about 20 minutes and had a deflection off of brush when I shot at him at about 23 steps. A WHOLE LOT OF FUN !!!
Missing is what makes it sweeter when you do it right... At least this is what I tell myself.
John III
-
Technically, I didn't miss, because the string did not come back to full draw !
It was a nice eight point buck, it was a little too dark to be able to know if I had a clean hit or miss.
So for you and experts out there ! Is this technically a miss, or is this just crying about !
-
You never found the arrow or any other sign?
-
Missed 2, killed 4. One of the misses was on a MONSTER I had been targeting. Total buck fever, I think.
-
I'm 50/50---nice shot on one--then missed one 2 weeks later at 15 yds. --Bone
-
3 does, one 7 point
-
My 2006 season so far.
Early nov. shoulder shot not recovered.still sick about that.
Mid Nov. doe running away from buck came by and stopped right over back. After beating my head on the tree a while heard some more noise.
Mid Nov. about one minute after above doe the buck chasing her comes in stops no problem right over back.Beat the head again hurt for 3-days after that.
Dec.28th. doe comes in finally picked a spot short trail job meat in freezer.Kip
-
One miss for me this year. A doe 33 yards. shot under her. Now it's time to get ready for Turkeys !! I think i like hunting them better than deer.
-
I don't want to talk about it !!!!
-
I got 3 does, all under 20 yards, all lung shot. I also missed a spike and a nice 8. must be buck fever. I hate to say it, but i also shot a spike in the shoulder and never found him. myself and 4 friends looked for over 2 days :banghead:
-
missed a little doe in Wisconsin in Nov. Nobody told me you can stand up in a ladder stand to shoot....I'm a ground pounder at heart.
-
took one shot- got a doe. Passed a medium rare eight pointer.
Didnt get to spend as much time in the woods this year as I usually do...and missed it.
-
Next time, lets just ask who did not miss. I will sum up my season
Day 1 kill, kill
day 2 miss, miss, miss, kill
day 3 miss, miss, miss
day 4 kill, miss, kill
day 5 miss, miss, miss
day 6 kill
day 7 miss
dau 8 miss
day 9 kill, kill
day 10 kill
day 11 kill
day 12 miss
day 13 miss, miss
Those are the 13 days I had shots, there were alot I did not.
-
I got to ask - 25 shots and they where all either kills or misses? None of option 3?
Steve
-
I missed an 8 Pointer at 25 yds . It was the only shot I had all year. J.Michael
-
Wow Onestringer, how many deer can you take in there in MO?
-
Missed a really nice 8 point with longbow. My very first hunt with the longbow. I Shot him several weeks later with muzzleloader. Turned out great to still get him but would have liked to have got him with the stick and string. Cant wait till next year to hunt more with longbow. Found out how much I like this traditional thing after shooting compound for 20 years. Cant wait to get my first kill with the longbow. Hersh
-
First week ever out hunting, I missed a last twilight 15 yard shot at a handsome 8 pointer from the inside of an abandoned barn. It kept walking straight towards me ever so slowly until I released. My first and bad case of buck fever. My hands were shakin all over. Only recurve shot this season. More smarter practice but still a couple weeks left to make up for it. There isn't much else like it!
-
Opening day mmmissed at 12 yards. Had bad case of jerkleg on a 4 point. Got the bow to half draw and watched a soft, slow arcing arrow pass harmlessly over his back. Couldn't believe the string got off my finger at that low tension. Great fun, and got to hunt with my brother who almost died from GBS in Nov.2005. Next year will be better!
-
I missed a doe at 25 yards. I spooked a whole lota deer walking into my hunting spot in the middle of the afternoon. They weren't saposed to be there yet but they beet me there. Deer went everywhere and some ran away real short and then started to come back accross once thee new where they wanted to go.This enormus doe comes trotting through and I draw and hit anchor follow lead let the string loose when it felt right and she actually heard the shot stopped imeadiately and the arrow passed right in front of her at boiler room level. If she would have stayed the course she would have been backstraps in the pan. But thats the way it goes.Later that evening I shot a real nice doe standing still, quartering away. great shot!
-
I hunted in MO and IL where doe tags are unlimited. There was one option 3, I labeled a miss. Option 3's are between me and me. I hate guys who say "I stuck one but could not find it", that happens and it sucks, but I don't really like talking about it. Six of those misses were at deer 5 yards or less from my tree. They sure are hard to hit that close.
-
Did not mean to single you out.
Reading this thread, you would get the impression that shots are either kills or clean misses - and none of us are that lucky consistantly.
The reality is if we are posting numerous multiple misses, we are also posting numerous multiple wounds.

Now after trying for the prize for most misses who is going to fess up with how many wounded deer this year? There are just not that many clean misses without a lot of almost misses too.jmo :)

That's exactly the way it should be! 'Nuff said. :readit:

I had 6 bucks run in under my stand AT THE SAME TIME,missed shots at 4 of them.Ran out of arrows.None wounded.Only wounds were to my pride.

That's just a cruel question to ask ! :saywhat:

I think you guys jinxed me. I didn't get much time in the fall to hunt - been building a new house. Missed out on groundhogs, squirrels, rabbits and all the interaction with does and small bucks in the early season which usually toughens me up mentally for the peak of the rut. For the last three weeks, there's been a nice 140 to 150 inch ten pointer hanging around my neck of the woods. I saw him in the headlights in the lane one night and my wife got a picture of him. So tonight with the storm front approaching I thought he would be on the move and slipped into the tree at about 4:00. At 5:00 tonight straight up here he come down the hollow and I melted. All I could think of was wrapping my hands around his beautiful white horns and smiling for the picture. He was standing 25 yards broadside and all I needed to do was crouch down and make a smooth release. But I felt like I was in a strobe light due to my nerves unraveling and suddenly, my heart was located right between my ears. The rational side said to abort, don't attempt a shot, but the devil sittin' on my shoulder on the other side, said "piece of cake!" God, I wish I would have just shot that devil. Sorry so long winded, but this just happened 74 minutes ago and I had to vent. An hour and a half before, I was shootin' four inch groups at 30 yards in the backyard. How can an experienced bowhunter fall apart so fast and miss a deer by six feet? God, I'm an idiot.

Stalked a doe in high grass field on my hands and knees for 45 minutes, she then bedded down in field. Forced the issue by using bawl in can call, she got up, broadside at 25 yards and shot 6 inches over her! Prefer to think of it as catch and release!

-
Missed a "Long Nose" whitetail doe the 2nd day of Sept. season at 15 yards. Feathers must of tickled her backbone right over the boiler room. She ran into a woven wire fence twice! She came in initially and bedded down infont of me behind a hedgeapple bush for 45 minutes. She than got up and wandering into a shooting lane. I blame the high shot on my loss of blood due to all the skeeters!
-
I had a whole thread about it earlier.
I should change my handle to BuckFever.
