Title: Arrow Spine
Post by: mossyoakpenn on July 23, 2012, 01:21:00 PM
Hi everyone!  Im new here and Im just getting into recurve shooting and had a question about arrow spine.  I was wondering, I have about a 26" inch draw length.  If I have a 55lb at 28" bow and only draw to 26", the bow only has approximately a high 40's draw weight.  In that case, what spined weight wooden arrows should I at least try first?  Thanks...

If you are pulling 49@26 and using a 27" arrow with 125 gr point from a recurve, I would start with a 50-54 spine arrow.  Your best bet is to get a test kit from an arrow maker.  They will give you a couple different spine arrows to try when you give them the specs of the bow.

X2 on the spine test kit.
They are REALLY nice to have around.

Personally I'd be tempted to go the other way on spine and think about 45-50#.

If you are shooting 5" or larger fletching and 125 grain points, I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference between 50-55 and 45-50 spine shafts.  I think you'll be happy with either.

That said, a test kit IS a good idea, just don't get too bogged down in the tuning.  Unless you like that sort of thing.

Thanks folks....i think itll be a test kit for me.  Does the recommended spine change with a heavier broadhead?

yes.

The heavier the tip the heavier the spine needed.

I would go with a 28" 45-50 spine shaft with 125 grain points.
