Title: Glue vs Tape
Post by: Tatonka17 on July 22, 2012, 02:24:00 PM
I've always fletched with tape when doing up any arrows, but I know a lot of guys prefer glue.  I've used Fletchtite Platinum in the past, and it works great, but takes forever to fletch up a dozen arrows on a single jig.

What glue have you guys used that doesn't take as long to dry and you've had good success?  Or should I just stick with the tape?

Thanks for the tip on keeping tape in the fridge.  I've never had a problem with tape, but most guys I know prefer glue, so I just wanted to know if the extra time was worth it.

taped feathers seemed to lean over on me in warmer weather.  Went back to glue.

For whatever reason, I have never had a good experience with tape.  I stick with glue and have never had any problems.

I love tape but had trouble with my last roll and used some Pine Ridge instant adhesive that I bought from The Footed Shaft, a sponsor. So far so good. Works as well as Goat Tough but a bit cheaper.

I had trouble with storing taped arrows in a box. If any side pressure they would give.
The tape is nothing more than a thin layer of glue that should set,up over time to be about the same.
I really like the platinum glue.
If your fletching all the time tape will be fast.
I don't do,as many arrows and for that reason use the glue.

Glue for me.  I tried the tape and couldn't get the hang of it.  The few I did fletch worked ok but didn't hold up like glue.

Yep I stopped using glue other than on the tips of the feathers, just to help the tape out.

Ive tried tape two different times problems both times. Im fletching arrows right at this moment. 2020 and 2018 legacys. I use 2 bitzs wraps and super glue. For wood i use duco and it takes a little longer

I've tried the tape, and liked it because it was easy, but when comparing them to glued (Duco) the tape is  very inferior.  When using tape, the feather does not "stand up" as much as when glued, and when it gets to warm the tape showed movement...yes even when glue is applied to the front and back.

Not to say glue (Duco) is the best-I have bought a bad tube of it before and I'm glad I found out before I did to many arrows, was quite embarrassing though to have the feathers fall off.

For me from here on out it is going to be glue.  By design, tape is made to fail.  All it takes is time before the stickiness of the tape wears off and then you have a problem.

Mike, was the duco thin like water? I just got a tube like that and was wandering about it?

Sorry guys not trying to change the subject.

Tape for me.  Only Bohning. Glue the ends.  Use truflight feathers only.  They have a quill that is thin enough, don't use tape with other brands of feathers, the tape  can't hold against the big quill fighting to bend back. I also use tape with turkey feathers stripped very successfully, and goose I grind myself. I've used tape for probably 6 years.  When done right the feathers don't fall off. Even when abused/ lost and found.  I have only had issues with feathers sporting thicker quills.

Fletch tape for me with a dot of fletch tite platinum at either end of the feather. For those who are having issues with the tape look at Rob DiStefano's post on fletch tape in the how to forum.

I was reluctant to use tape, but after a solid 2 months of abusing arrows I have not seen a single failure.  I do dot the ends of the feathers with the platinum.  I'm stickin with whats working for me.

Definetly stick with the tape in my opinion it works the best.

Feathers will fall off in cold weather with tape , I went to shoot alittle one day in Dec. before hunting and every arrow I shot looked like someone kicked a turkey in the butt .Glue works so good why use tape? Tim

Don't know if it helps..since I haven't had a failure, but I always run my thumbnail down the tape before I peel it and along the quill after removing clamp to make sure the feathers stand up good.

I believe that if you're having issues with tape, You're doing something incorrectly. JMO

Nope, tape does not hold as well as glue.  I have had good results with superglue gel recently but duco works great!

Glue for me also. I'm not in that much of a hurry to fletch arrows, plus I can fletch 6 in a hour with my multi fletcher and glue. So I can do a dozen in one evening if I want. I know tyhe glue will hold like I want so see no need to change.

I started out using tape with a single jig.
The tape works well...but..It can move a bit if you push on the fletch a bit.

I never had an actual problem with the tape.
But I didn't like that it does have a bit of give.
I just like things to stay "no matter what" if you know what I mean.

I switched to duco for my woodies and easton quick bond for my beman carbons.
..btw..don't try putting a "dot" of the easton or other super glue stuff at the tip of the fletch to make a smooth transition..it seeps up to the feather and makes for a hard spot. Duco works fine on the carbs for that.

I also got a jo jan multi fletch.

I like gluing better now.
It just seems to be more secure and it's one worry gone out of my head.

With the 8-15min cure time depending on the glue I can fletch up a dozen in an hour or two.

I wouldn't glue with only a single jig...would take waaayy too long for my tastes.

I actually get more consistent fletches with glue. The glue will let the feather slip slightly when you lay the jig down if you don't lay it perfectly...By slipping I mean into the right spot.

The tape is un forgiving.
You put that clamp down just slightly off your stuck with a slightly off fletch.

I never had too much trouble dealing with applying the tape to the fletch.
I found a process that worked pretty smoothly for me in fact.

But as you know, there is still the stick it on, trim it, peel off the backing to go through on each one.

I find it easier to just run a bead of glue.

It's jo jan multi fletch and glue for me for here on out.
