Title: Hot weather shipping
Post by: 4dogs on July 21, 2012, 02:23:00 PM
I need some opinions from yous....Is shipping bows in this hot weather we have all been experiancing something to worry about...when a bow is in transit do we have to worry about it overheating and delaminating? I cant seem to get a straight answer from USPS or UPs.

most of their trucks don't have sunroofs so I don't think they get near as hot as a typical small passenger area vehicle that has windows everywhere.

Good question though.

If you wrap your bows in bubble wrap inside a card board box, you have nothing to worry about. if you are talking modern fiberglass backed bows..... The bow itself would need to get well over 120 degrees unstrung in direct sunlight to effect it.

If you want to minimize the truck time ship priority mail and they fly it across country.

Having unloaded trucks in the summer, without skylights, I would not ship a laminated bow of any age to it. Why risk it. Enclosed trailers get mighty hot. Newer bows? Maybe.

I was going to buy an older (60s) Bear bow from someone across the country, but with the sweltering summer heat I asked if he would wait until fall. He thankfully agreed to wait. The bow already has vertical stresss fractures. I don't want to risk it.

I might add that you should make sure to either ship, or have your shipper ship, the bow on a Monday.  That way there is little risk of the bow sitting in a hot box for a long weekend.

OPINION:  Nothing to worry about. In playing/trying hundreds on bows over the years I have never had any problems in the summer or any other season. Happy shipping around the world.
