Years ago I had a file I bought at one of the traditional archery expos...probably Kalamazoo or the GLLI. It was about 6 inches long, and didn't have a tang, but a rounded butt with a hole in it. The edges were rounded and worked as a steel.
Does anyone remember and/or have a source for this file?
Roger,
I remember those files, but haven't seen them in years. They may be available if you can locate them. In the meantime....
Kustom King sells their "Kustom King Broadhead File", and it does have the rounded edge you seek. Sometimes that rounded edge can be a bit 'gritty', but smoothing it up with a bit of medium emery is easy. I use the rounded edge as a steel, and have done so for going on 15 years.
I remember that one, 3RA sold them. I bought a few and still have one "new" wrapped up. I keep one in m pack for field touchups. Great file, wish they were still available. May have to see if I can google them up.
Nicholson handy file ?
Grobet files
Check out the oregon flat chainsaw file it is 6in long and no teeth on the side. It has swiss made on it. It is a depth teeth file
I have bought nicholson files that were like that.
any links to specific files? I'm in the market for one of these as well.
It seems like most of the chainsaw makers market raker files (the flat chainsaw file that ymountainman mentions). I have several brands and they are all very good. Any place that sells chainsaws will have them. I have found raker files to be the best broad head files I own.
I get mine at Tractor Supply, but I'll bet you can get them almost anywhere that has chainsaw supplies. They come in 6" and 8" -- I like the 6" best.
Look into the DMT folding diamond stone in Medium and Coarse. I find it superior to my files for touching up broadheads in the field
I don't know of the one you speak of, but we can get an axe file up here with the rounded handle. I have the "chain saw file", but read somewhere that auto body files are some of the best out there.
First place I checked didn't have them, but still looking.
Tom, those auto body files are very coarse...guys use them to set the bevel on old hard Grizzly broadheads.
The "raker" file sounds like what you're looking for EXCEPT it has a tang.

I think the little file he is referring was called a "Grizzly" file, and yeah 3Rivers sold them before new ownership. Been looking for years but haven't been able to find a new one... Has very fine cutting teeth, not much more than a course stone... I still have my old ones, will take a picture when I get a chance.
Roger,
I sent ya a p.m and think I know what your referring to...If it is indeed let me know if that's it or not...Thanks,
Keefers <><
Sounds like a Red Devil #15. Use to be found in paint type stores for sharpening scrapers. Don't even know if they still exist.
I remember those files. But I'll have to agree with the raker files as my favorites now...cheap, small enough to carry in my fanny pack, a fine cut...perfect for broadheads...and most are made in europe somewhere. I've even purchased grobet raker files for a couple bucks apiece.
Thanks guys, but the search continues. :)
