Title: Massachusetts Archers/Selfbows
Post by: Tajue17 on July 16, 2012, 07:13:00 AM
Anyone out there want to get together on a regular basis to make selfbows, quivers, whatever?  I used to do this with a bunch of stick bow shooters but they all stopped shooting, (paul, sean, Goerge)

I have a horse, some draw knives, scrapers, we can make a dry box,, we can even set up shop in my back closed in patio in Plymouth if needed (the wife is all for it) or somewhere better ,maybe someones club or garage?

if anyone here knows where I can catch up with shooters from Mass please let me know,, All the Mass trad clubs are now gone (TBONE, St Sabastians in Trad bowhunter) I'm maybe 1 guy out of group of 25-30 that still picks up a bow..

I would be interested in some craftwork. I do not make selfbows, but I am getting into quivers, antler projects, and things of that nature. Or to just shoot.

sounds good, i have some pelts from some of the deer I've got that I wanted to make a few things out of, also have some antler I want to make a knife handle out of too!

plenty of shooting here or at my club in Hanson where I stump and rove through the bale course..

keep me posted on your schedule,, I was wondering about selfbows and the high humidity outside and is there a better time of the year to make them.

You going to Tyngsboro in August?

mark whats going on in Tyngsboro, if I remember they did part of the triple crown there??? I'm not even sure whats happenign anymore with trad shoots, TBONE is no more right? uxbridge and stockbridge all gone I think,  but anyway sure make a trip out or maybe mix it with a local 3D my club even does a few,,, I can show a nice little public spot near my club where I've taken a bunch of deer already..

oldbow.com has a schedule of the tricounty 3D's but stay in touch..

TYLER,, I'll PM you once I get the place to do a craft thing,, I'm thinking just a get together where we can make different things, different ideas.. I want to finish an ironwood bow I have roughed out and maybe do a sheath, I have 9 finished hides from some of the local deer I've got,, sure wish I had the coyote's done but was worried about diseases I guess..

Here is a link from George's Blog on Traditional shoots in New England.  The White Mountain Shoots usually draw a nice crowd.  The Tyngsboro Sportsman Club is off route 3 north just before the NH border...very easy to get to.  I live about fifteen minutes from there...tippit

Tippit is right. This shoot does draw a nice crowd. It's a good shoot; Lots of fun. I'll be there both Sat and Sun but wont be camping.

If you google Tyngsboro Sportsman's Club you can get directions there.

Best of luck to you on getting something going. We do this once a month in Pasadena, CA and it truly is a lot of fun. Some of the best wood bowyers on the west coast have been regulars at our gatherings and everyone learns something from everyone else.

thanks for the link,, and now that you mentioned the directions I have been there a few times and its set up by Harry Hubbard I think right? I used to shoot with Harry, Jacques, Kevin Colman, Mike Workman and a few others, went on their winter stickbow rabbit hunt too but a great group of folks up there.

Grey, I agree.. we had a nice wednesday night group happening but most of everyone I know all gave up the sport so it fell apart, a shame too because I made a few nice bows and we even set up a hunt in NH once all the bows where finished but good times "at one time".

I don't mind driving up to 50 miles if someone else wanted to host this somewhere else..

I think thats a Great idea, I used to shoot with a bunch of guys in Weymouth they shot at one of the schools every week one night it was awsome just to get together and fling some arrows through the winter.

Im all about this.....keep me in the loop in regards to anything that goes on.   Never made a self bow but would like to give it a try.  I would like to meet some close-by fellow trad archers and get together for some fun shootin'!  Im north central mass,  about 10 minutes from the N.H. border.   Lots of wheel bow guys around....a couple indoor clubs even....but no longbow/recurve guys that Im aware of  (Whats wrong with people uh?!!!  :knothead:    :biglaugh:  )
