I will be shooting a 45# Martin Viper this season and want to know what broadheads will offer the best arrow flight in a longbow. Threeblade-Muzzy MX-3, Montec, Expandable- NAP Shockwave, Two-blades?? Thanks!
I shoot a woodsman and they fly great. my total arrow wight is 490 and that is with a 150grn head.
It is a pretty accepted concept that any sharp cut on contact, fixed blade broadhead will work fine. Tune it with the arrows you will use and go for it.
expandables are typically not well accepted in the trad community.
ChuckC
I like the flight characteristics of the Simmons heads. I think it is the concave design that reduces planing but agree with what ChuckC said. I would not advise expandables; they are illegal in some states for a reason and many guides will not allow them.
Does blade count matter? thanks
With that weight bow I would go with the Muzzy MX-3, and yes blade count matter to me.
I would suggest looking at the VPA's.

I would suggest either a Grizzly head in whatever weight you need according to your tuning or a VPA Terminator.
If you tune your arrow to your bow....you should have good flight. No reason you can't get a multitude of bheads to fly great.
I can shoot a host of different broadheads from the same bow ....and offten carry 3 different heads if I'm deer hunting where there's hogs....One style for deer and most hogs...one style for big hogs....and a follow-up head with is usually a lighter 2 blade.
Well tuned to your bow and very sharp!! Stay away from the mechanical type.
SHARP ONES!!!!!
Will a 2 blade fly different than a 3 blade?

If your bow is tuned well, any well built, true, broadhead will fly good.
Check out VPA's :archer2:
Before I went to the trouble of tuning, broadheads were a real mess to shoot. Now, well-tuned and shooting off a rest, I can shoot whatever broadhead I want, as long as the weight works with what I'm tuned to.
Wensel Woodsmans, the vented, 125-grain glue-ons, with appropriate weight glue-on adaptors, worked best when my arrow flight wasn't perfect. But I still had to be in the ballpark with my tuning.
Where's the cheapest place to buy some vpa's, and which model ?
Johnathan,
If you go to:
Rayzor, Inc.
(540) 819-1776
rayzor-vpa.com
and type in "tradgang" in lower case letters at checkout he will give you free shipping at this time, but before you order you will need to figure what weight you want and tune your bow using the correct arrows. I would suggest going with the 150-200gr and up with a .500 spine arrow like a Golt Tip 35/55 and use field points
to do your tuning.
I believe my draw length is about 27 1/4 or so and I will check tonight when I get off work for a more exact length , I really need help knowing what length to cut my
New traditional 3555 on my 45# viper . Then the field/broadhead weight so i can place a broadhead order. Thanks! If you have a lot of experience with a similar set
Up Please chime in.
I would very strongly recommend that you work with some field points of different weights, and see how your arrow flight is, if you haven't already. Shoot a few bare shafts and you'll see what the arrow is doing without the feathers having to correct. If you go through the whole bareshaft exercise, it will be a big help. That way you don't waste money on broadheads that you find won't work for you. You can't rely on what someone else is using, because your technique and release is unique to you. It would be like trying to use a mouthpiece molded from someone else's teeth.
agreed,, but I'd bare shaft them first if you can,,,,, I highly recommend magnus Stingers! theres vids of compound shooters shooting 2-blade 125's 100+ yards and hitting x's.. others ar
great too but for out of the package and ready for a Lightweight longbow these are the babys..
personally I shoot centaur, abowyer, simmons, VPA, silver flame and magnus stingers..
With your 27" 1/4 draw length & assuming your bow is 45#@28" I would recommend a two blade head. If you want one that comes fairly sharp out of the package, the Magnus Stinger two blade would be a good choice. If your a proficient sharpener, there are many many good choices.
A good sharp three or four blade head would work too, but if I didn't already have any & was looking to buy, I would go with the two blade with your 43#-44#ish set-up.
& I agree with what Archie said, tuning may change everything. You might find you need more point weight with your shafts, especially if there already cut short?
Any SHARP two blade should work fine.....
I asked a friend that is more savvy with carbon arrows than I am, he suggested Zwickey Eskimos mounted on steel broadhead adapters, cut to to a bit longer than I would have thought, 32" to start with.. Which I would agree with the Eskimos, they are priced right, they fly out of anything and nearly anyone can get them shaving sharp. However, according to the Stu Miller program with the 75 grain steel adapters a 125 grain head on 3555s they have it cut to 28.5" to match your Viper at your draw length. If your release is softer it would need to be longer than that with 200 grains up front.
I tried Zwickeys out of a bow with a tuning issue (not a big issue, either), and they did not fly well.
