Sorry for the delay, got home this afternoon and I was wiped out.
Sunday afternoon I met Ryan Gill at the property and we filled a couple of feeders, did a little shooting, and hung out in camp waiting for Billy.
Billy Berger had a booth at the Big Buck Show in Lakeland and had been a little delayed, no worries, the hogs move late typically in summer anyway.
Billy arrived and we quickly geared up and headed for our stands. One thing I noticed on the way in was the differences in our footwear. I had knee high rubber boots, Ryan was wearing leather mocs, and Billy was barefoot! Actually, he would have worn sneakers or boots but forgot an extra pair and didn't want to be wearing wet sneakers for three days(I can't blame him).
Ryan headed for the pecan stand and I walked Billy to the double stand and then headed for the grove stand.
About an hour into the sit, I heard a hog squealing...
While we were getting ready to head in, Ryan handed me a beautiful stone knife he had made. Not only does it look great but it is a working knife and I was hoping to be able to try it out on a hog or two. (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/stoneknife011.jpg)
Some pics around camp. Ryan and Billy comparing notes on primitive gear. (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/longbowrat004.jpg)
I had hung a new stand in the pecan trees which were already dropping, Ryan went there and Billy sat the Double stand.
There had been a reddish brown boar coming there that had given several hunters(including me) the slip.
I was hoping Billy could introduce him to a stone point.
Here is a short clip of my encounter with the boar. (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/th_SpottedRedBoar.jpg) (http://s301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/?action=view¤t=SpottedRedBoar.mp4)
Back to the squealing pig in a minute.....
thats gonna be just plain cool! TOTALY PRIMATIVE! AWSOME! :campfire:

Can't wait to hear the rest of the story!
Love hunting Jim's lease, it is awesome!!
Thanks Bill. Looking forward to your next trip down!
As usual in the summer here, rain was threatening.
After settling into my stand, I saw some rats scurrying around my feeder. Great! They have joined the squirrels, raccoons, hogs, and ants in the war against me and my feeders(more on the rat later).
I texted Billy and he had already had a lot of action. The spotted red boar at 8 yards but couldn't get a shot before the wind swirled and it spooked. A second group of hogs came in...
Billy took a shot at a small white hog but it moved as he released, the arrow hit it in the lower leg and the hog ran off with the arrow.
He looked for blood but nothing and looked again in the am, most likely a non-viatl hit.
The next morning found us back on stand. No hogs came in to my spot but some rats were tempting me so here's what happened....(click on the pic) (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/th_LongbowRat.jpg) (http://s301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/?action=view¤t=LongbowRat.mp4)
Love it. A rat killing!
Great shot!
Ryan had seen some hogs but didn't see one he wanted to shoot. He had a shot a small one in June and wanted something a little bigger this time.
Monday night was basically a washout, we only had about an hour on stand because of the rain.
Often following periods of heavy rain(it softens the ground) the hogs will do more rooting and come less to feeders.
No sightings at all Tuesday morning either.
I did get some small game shooting in and had a great time hunting with two very knowlegeable bowyers and hunters.
Here is a short clip of my small game hunt:Just click on the picture. (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/th_Summersmallgamehunt.jpg) (http://s301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/?action=view¤t=Summersmallgamehunt.mp4)

Looking forward to the next hunt with Ryan and Billy, besides having fun, I always learn a lot from guys like that.
Let's go rat hunting!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys, how about a Rodent Slam! LOL! Start with deer mouse, jumping mouse, cotton rat...all the way up through Beaver..
Man I can't wait to get down there! I hate rats...watched the movie Willard and now wanna go for the rodent slam!
True South Adventures Inc.
is now offering a Very Small Game 7 day combo hunt.
Wood rat, vole, mole, field mouse, city mouse, tree rat(in season).
We are the only outfitter in Florida offering this package. Remember, these are free range, fair chase hunts,(no circular treadmills or very low fences).*these hunts are filling fast, check web-site for absurdly high pricing. This rat is at the taxidermist now(of course). (http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn66/tarponnut/longbowrat002.jpg)
Do you fry em up?
Look at that shot placement!!!
Aside from carrying the plague and being creepy (see Willard reference above) I bet they'd taste like squirrel :) Fried up in some bacon fat with a little flower, salt, pepper. I can see it now: fried rat, gravy and biscuits.
Sign me up Jim! Don't want one of them low-fence, high-dollar treadmill rodent hunts. Fair chase is the only way to take very small game :saywhat:
Half dozen makes a great Rat kabob
Nice shooting... cool video :)
Jim how the heck can you hit a rat with one shot on film???
Yet have not been able to put a hog on tape for 2 years???
P.S. Send me a dozen rat hides. Leaving for family vacation in Maine soon and want to go "PRIMITIVE" on the beach this year.
Rat fur loin cloths are in!!
Now that I think about it...one hide should be plenty.
Are raccoons a nuisance there? I thought most states considered them furbearers? He looked like the young of the year.
Yes. Besides killing the neighbors chickens and hand spinning the feeders all night for hogs(corn is $11.50 a bag here).
They also pull wires out of feeder heads and carry disease(I've personally shot two that were sick).I recently had one client that saw six raccoons while on stand.
There is open season for them in Florida on private land. No predators mess with them other than humans. When you are an outfitter your opinion changes(or is reinforced) when they are costing you money, plus they are fun to hunt.
Bill, I hear you, I wonder about my hog luck, too sometimes.
