How many here honor your bows by naming them? Give us some examples and the story behind the name(s).
Ken
I named my Hill longbow OL Strutter. Not much of a story behind it. I love turkey hunting and a trophy bird is an ol strutter and so am I. Ha
I've had a bunch of bow and only named one. It was a shrew and I called it 'Red'. Don't know way...
I have a Mohawk named "Tbone" It got its name because a couple of buddies bet me a steak I would not hunt with the same bow all season...they lost.RC
I have gave my Shafer Silvertip several names all within a days afield. Missed a 120 inch 8 point at less than 20 yards one morning only to call it a %^&$#$%. Killed a slick head about 30 minutes later at about 25 yds only to call it "Horn Hater" I would say the names were more of a reflection of me than the bow. Right now it would have to go by the name of "Dust Collector" or "Underserved" thankfully baseball tournys will be done with for a month or so after this weekend and I can start coaching myself back into some arrow placement rather than coaching others on baseball fundamentals.
This will be my second season with Koko. 68" Kohannah longbow. Just made sense.
I named a Bob Lee bow I bought 11 months after I quit smoking for good in 2005 Nosmo King.
no smoking
Still have not touched a cigarette since or any tobacco.
The name comes from a baby named that in our town. When asked why she named her baby Nosmo King
she said she saw the name on the double doors going in the delivery room.Nosmo on one door and king on another.True story.Kip
I call my Tall Tines longbow "George".
And my Two Tracks Ambush is "Secretariat".

:biglaugh:
I have a Selway LiL Mag I used last year. Shot a doe with it at 7pm and a little buck the next day at 7am, my first traditional kills. Her name is "Deuce".
I name my bows after Blues artists or blues songs...some have double meaning.
some of the names are:
double Trouble (stevie ray vaughan)
muddy (muddy waters)
little walter
the king (bb.king )
Ten Years after (a blues/rock group and the tenth year I was in traditional archery
Willy (willy Dixon)
Albert (albert king )
Hoodo Man
Robert (my dad and Robert Johnson )
Buddy Guy (the artisit and my brother Guy )
My BEAR collection bows don't have names yet but I am thinking of giving them names..but not bLUES related..
I have fun with it anyway...each year I have A THEME for hunting ...last year it was self bows...this year is "year of the BEAR...only using BEAR bows...next year is already planned..."this years for yew" only using yew bows
Kip, I have one named "no smoking" as well. Herb Meland, Pronghorn Bows, built this Ferret for me, then GAVE it to me when I quit the habit.

I have one Osage Selfbow, Sterling Holbrook gave me called Horse, because when he split the stave out it smelled like a wet horse.
The Osage Selfbow that I built, we call Shine, because the wood was so bright you just about had to wear sunglasses to work it. Now its turned a mellow shade of osage.
Johnny/JAG
Most of my bows have a name. "Moment of Truth" "Dreamcatcher" "Restless Spirit" "Predator" "Real Deal" "Good Medicine" "Four Seasons" "Bowdacious" "Sweet Shooter" "Black Magic Kodiak" "Kemosabe" "Toxophilite" "Odyssey" and my new Widow will be called "Obsession".
I shot a Catalina ram about a month after getting my Kanati, first shot was 30yrds and the second was 70yrds. Couldn't believe I made it.
Har name was Catalina right there on the spot...
Let's see. I've had:
"Sweetness", my most favorite lemonwood longbow.
"Ol' Thumper", a badly tillered Hickory selfbow that would loosen my fillings.
"Sally", a 40# Hickory that I made to shoot after I got a cast off my arm and didn't have much strength.
"Auntie G", another Hickory with a really fat handle, kind of like Aunt Gwen's arm. It was a pretty slow bow, too, again, much like Aunt Gwen.
"Dammit", one of my first fiberglass lam bows. It shot great with a really low brace height. If you didn't wear an arm guard, it'd sting you good and lead to some cursing fits.
"Ol' Hernie", a 90# Hill style longbow that some joker had marked as 50#@28". My buddies would hurt themselves trying to shoot it.
None of my bows actually have a name but I always refer to them as if they were female.
I have owned several bows that I named "Lightning".
They never hit the same place twice!
I have one with TJ, initials of wife and I.
One TJ 13 in honor of our 13th anniversary
One named Wesley, got from Craig after going to bob school.
One named Turkinator, from shooting first turkey with longbow.
Had one I named "SPOT" and wrote it on limb, it shot right where ever I wanted to hit, miss it.
Next bow will be "Seburn Surman", in honor of my father who passed away, and of course would lecture us instead of making us get a switch.
Two bows named, first one is "Sweet Sue" after my bride of 32 years and the other is "Hemothorax".
I've threatened to name a couple of mine Firewood-one that had so much handshock, my hand was numb after a dozen shots, and one that I tore a ligament to my ring finger while drawing.
The bow I'm currently shooting goes by "killer B" named for the osage stripe laminated between some black phenolic in a grey action wood riser that I made. That Oasage is really yellow for a while not so much now!
Steve
Lucille, after BB King's stringed instrument.
I was target shooting out back one morning, after an end of three arrows from 20 yards, I noticed a hawk sitting in a tree watching me from not twelve yards away, while I pulled arrows from the target butt. These were freshly fletched wood arrows with 5 1/2 inch bright yellow fletches. I thought momentarily about how I could shoot that bird, but in the next instant thought better of myself and the bird. :scared: The arrow hit the bull and the hawk flew away. Hence the name "HAWK: for that bow......It(the memory) was a gift given, for me on that day....
I normally don't name my bows, they tend to name themselves... But, I do have an older Black Widow SA III that I named "Reaper" because a lot of things die around that bow...
I have a bow named "Maximus Stealth" I call it Max, got the name because it is made from grey actionwood and is hard to see in the woods...
Only named 2 bows, 1 was a Robertson recurve named "Mountain Dew" cause I drank a lot of it then. My new bow is called Smokin Beauty because it is smokin fast and it is a beauty. Caribow Tuktu EX recurve. Shawn
" You're Next" ! obvious reason's!
'Thorgal'. The comic book that started it all.
My bows name is Stalking Fox.
My fave to date is HAG, Hot Archer Girl. A 60"beauty I made myself.
I've only named one bow.
Here's the story..not much of one..but here it is.
I found this name appropriate as I sold my one good bow (a whip) to get the funds to make my next bow. The first bow I tried to make was an oak board bow..almost worked but it started to chrysal.
Second attempt at a bow was a boo backed ipe. That bow didn't turn out either..pretty sure the ipe wasn't good.
At this point I was running out of money for a bow and was feeling a bit pressed for time to get used to any bow.
I decided to give a boo backed osage a try.
This one actually worked!
After the fury I was in for a couple months to make a working bow I felt like a calm had washed over me after making a working bow.
I named the bow.. Halcyon.
One of the meanings of the word is calming of storms.

I won't name the bowmaker I Recieved a longbow from but it was his personal bow he was selling. It was beautifull and marked 48@28. I named it Mary. It was the hardest 48lbs I ever drew. When I checked it , it was actually 55lbs. He exchanged it for another stock bow that was less weight. I named it Mary Mary. A week later the limb delaminated. A recurve was chosen as replacement and was named Mary Mary Quite Contrary!
Only bow I ever named is the Hill Half Breed in my signature below. God helped me survive a heart attack this past spring, and the bow was ordered soon afterwards.
I don't name mine but if I did they would have names like:
"Saved a long time"
"Sold a bunch of stuff"
"Couldn't justify it but I'm single so who cares"
"Too pretty to sell"
"Need one before the bowyer retires"
or something along those lines.
lol
I named my first bow after an Amazon warrior. Alcibie, which means strength/power. It was a 75lb bow that nearly broke me.
My latest bow I have kept with the tradition and named after another Amazon. Ainia, which means swiftness.
My new Kempf Trophy Hunter is named "SUGAR MAMA" because my wife bought it for me and she makes more money than I do and that's my nickname for her. The bow is a sweet shooter too;)
"TEXAS TWIN" my hunting buddy and I took down a mesquite from his ranch where we both grew up hunting together. We ship the core to Jack Kempf and he made us matching Qwyk Styks with the mesquite wood in the riser and wedges. Took almost 2 years for the wood to dry out.
I have a trad tech titan. Camo Riser, black limbs with a camo tape on the backs, a shelf rest and side plate from scap leather I had, and the grip I modified with a rasp. It got the name " Ol' Ugly", cause it is not a looker by any means. Yet I can set that bow aside and play with others for months, and pick up "ol' ugly" and hit where I am looking at 30yrds.
The name of my bow changes... Some times it is unfit to print! :scared:
i named my horse Bow little weed. because it is so short :archer:
I had a longbow that was 57 lbs at my draw length... I named her "hinds 57"
Tradcat
I've only named two bows in my life.
The first was the first "fancy" bow I ever owned. It was a Sarrels recurve that I ordered up with exotic woods and snake skins on the limbs. Its name was "The Venom Stick". I soon learned that I cannot own a "fancy" bow because I am too rough on them and have since sold that bow.
The second bow I have named is my current go-to bow. It is a Sarrels Blueridge takedown longbow; 50#@29.5". It is a solid cocobolo riser with boo cores and black glass on the limbs. I ordered the bow before my first trip to Africa because I did not have a takedown bow. Bob called me up one day and said he had the bow nearly finished, but wanted me to come over and shoot it a bit to make sure the grip was satisfactory to me. I was standing outside his shop shooting into a haybale target when another customer came up and was interested in one of Bob's bows. After a short bit, the two came out to where I was and Bob introduced him to me saying:
"This is Bisch. He has killed more critters with my bows than the Black Plague!".
I instantly knew right then what the name of my new bow would be! "The Black Plague"
I have taken more critters with this bow probably then all the other bows I have owned together. It is living up to its name so far!
Bisch
One recurve is named 'Pascual' and the other is 'Satchel' after two of baseball's favored all-time great curveball pitchers.
Camilo Pascual: Ted Williams called Pascual's curveball the "most feared curveball in the American League for 18 years
Satchel Paige: Jack Brickhouse, a Chicago Cubs broadcaster, described the pitches Paige threw as "not quite legal but not quite illegal."
My Stewart is named 'Brenda' which is a Germanic female name for 'flame'. My Robertson is named 'Mojo' because coming from Dick in Montana it just oozes the hunt. Plus my bow-buddy Jeff has one name 'Majik' so I had to. Two Robertsons, Majik and Mojo, haha. The Habu Jet I jokingly call 'Black Death' cause its so nasty looking, but haven't killed anything with it yet LOL. Rest dont have names yet cause they aren't permanent editions.
Had the name "Looney" for a USNA Grad and Lacrosse Player who was also a Navy Seal. He served 4 tours in Afgan. and Iraq and lost his life with days left before he was going to be mustered out. He had just gotten married the summer before and had their whole life ahead. I never want to forget even though I never knew him.

HEMOTHORAX has to be the coolest bow name Ive ever heard. It just says it all.
double post
Don't usually name them, but I had one with maple lams and black glass I called Moon Pie. Had another one named Brown 25, because it looked like....
Bought a bow blank I wound up naming Earl, after Earl Scheib, on account of all the cloudy glass and glue voids.
I had a bamboo 79@27" from Jerry Hill, great shooting bow, that I called 'little dutch' and my favorite string follow bamboo white glass bow that I built back in 1976, 88@27" with 3/4 inch of string follow, I called 'Old Crutch' because it seemed old even when it was new.
I have named a few bows, some bows I have let the bowyer name them and even others have been given a name by friends.
The named bows I have are as follows:
Northern Mist Classic with Cherry lams back and belly was dubbed "Cherry Bomb" by friends on the 3D course when a Surewood arrow hit a hickory tree and the arrow exploaded! The bow pulls 83#@28
Northern Mist Classic "Bona-Fide" named by bowyer
Northern Mist Classic "Fools Errand" long story
Pacific Yew Classic "Charisma" named after a chapter in "Bows on the Little Delta"
Pacific Yew Classic "Valiant" named after Ed Bilderback's boat
Flatwood's Custom Longbow "Taulmaril" named after a fictional bow from a fantasy fiction novel series
I have a few more "named bows" but these are the special ones!
The bow I'm hunting with this year is "Clear Creek Deerslayer". Another one of my Hill bows is "Sat Cong". If you were there, you know what that means.
Nam reference?
For me a name for a bow has to fit the bow. Its something that gets adopted over time. The one I just handed down to my oldest son had earned the name Calamity Jane. There's no real story to go with it, it just seemed to fit. We were always getting into trouble together.
My new one hasn't been named yet. But we've been spending some quality time together on long walks through the woods terrorizing the stumps and I'm certain that her name will dawn on me pretty soon...
My wife bought me a Black Widow TFV about ten years ago... Named it "Honey Bunny"... The rest of the bows I own havn't any names... Don't know who their father is? :archer2: ...
I name all of my bows, the name comes to me from the bow most times, but my newest Tip was named in honor of my late twin.
"Nakohe"

Danny, that bow wears the name "Nakohe" well, it is a beauty.
I trust you will have great success with it and that the fond memory of your brother will be with you as you stalk your prey. God bless.
I have a Hoots recurve I named my "Chocolate Moose" because it has the most beutiful chocolate colored Ziricote with wide black wavy grains in the riser,Olive ash burl limb vaneers over boo cores and topped off with accents and limb tips of what else "Moose antler"..
Oh I almost forgot the stippling was Lees first Moose antler in the grip area....Makes me hungry for Chocolate Moose everytime I hold it.... :archer:
My Anderson Hyak is named "Blackfoot" for some Native American heritage in the family. My Anderson Skookum Classic is "Braveheart".
When I first started naming My bows the first one was named "Money" because it was money on the spot everytime I shot, then the next one was "Mo Money" it too was on the spot, next one was "Alotta Money"... it cost a lot
finally I have "No Money" I can't hit Squat with it.
My Chad Holm Osprey longbow is named "Elk Master"

That's funny and sad all at the same time! :(
I decided to update my post from last year. I now have 5 bows that are named.
Hemothorax - Massie Longhorn
Sweet Sue - Massie Forward Handle Longbow
Tahlequah - Dave Johnson Red Cedar Longbow
Sequoyah - Dave Johnson Red Cedar Longbow
Crow and yes another Dave Johnson Red Cedar Longbow
Danny
I used to but i have not named the last two. I think I will have to do that.
I have not named my two Howard Hills. They have to earn their names by earning their keep! :D
I named her Storm because when the storm moved in she didn't care she shot the same as before the storm
I name some bows and neglect to name others...my most recent adventure in bow names actually involves a renaming...I was at a 3D shoot and a young lady pointed out the image of the face of a lemur in the bocote grain on one of my limbs...that bow is an RER LXR meaning it has two sets of limbs...by the time we were finished finding that face pattern we identified a total of nine...somehow I remembered that a lemur and a bush baby might be the same animal...with some research I learned they are different animals that are related with the same facial features...so with the static tip recurve limbs that bow is christened Zoboomafoo (a cartoon lemur) and with the longbow limbs attached I call it the Bush Baby Bow...one of the things I liked most about sorting out the names for that bow is what I learned about a couple of very interesting animals
DDave
I name my Bear Grizzlies. One from the early 80s is called Bugs, because of a fluke kill-shot I made on a running rabbit at around 50 yards. Never make a shot like that again. My Green Grayling is called Fred, after its designer.
Best, MT
I'm hoping to name one of mine "Killer" soon! LOL
When I turned 40, I decided to reward myself by ordering a full custom recurve. Since I was living in Australia at the time, I figured my bow should be all Aussie timbers made by an Aussie bowyer. I named her "Austral Dreaming" to remind me of the wonderful 3 years I spent down under.

I just bought a Dave Johnson longbow named "Whitetail Magic." While I was curious about this red cedar bow, and I thought the black back/white belly looked cool, it was the name that sealed the deal. I really miss hunting whitetails!
I call my zipper sxt longbow "longstick". Long story short on that name; After I killed my first two deer with a longbow two weeks apart I told my friend "Shoot yeah dude I busted her with the longstick." after each kill. It just kinda stayed haha.
I purchased one of Gary Sentman's personal bows -- a Mid Grip model, 68" and 56# @ 28". Really like that bow. Gary named it "Last Mohican."
Never named any of mine until the one I hunt with now. It is a BW PCH and I call it "Paceech".
My Green Mountain LB earned the moniker "Pua'a Kane" - Hawaiian for boar - when I killed one as my first big game taken on Oahu.
My selway Lil magnum is beast, because well most of the time I shoot it like a beast :) , my jd berry Argos is wildbilly bc that is the name that came on it when I bought it from a friend
I'm new here, and new to archery in general. My first bow, which I just bought, had the most juvenile factory name for a bow that I've ever heard. I bought a greatree 'deerslayer' (I know, it's just a mass production bow, but it's my first, and I'm a student on a budget). Deerslayer!?! Who thought it was a good idea to let a 5th grader name that bow? Anyway.. I had to rename it. In geology, there is a sedimentary depositional environment called 'aeolian', which means that the sedimentary rock was formed in a wind environment. I like that.. formed by the wind. So I named the bow 'aeolian'.
My New Cheetah Howard Hill Longbow is named "Ol' Faithfull" And boy Oh boy she is a sweet shooter....smooth as peanut butter and as beautiful as morning sun rise.
I call my CHX G G short for Gorgous Girl
I got a new Tribute from bama bows with osage riser and spilt osage viners, I call it thE ''oS'' after my yellow lab his name osage.
My favorite at the moment is called Titan II. I've never named any of my equipment, bows, guns, etc.
It is cool that for some this is an important add to their enjoyment of hunting/shooting though.
"Fudge" is my 62", 60# Tall Tines; because of the wood color-combination, and the smooth & sweet performance...
I have 2 Ed Holcomb copies of Fred Bear's 59' Kodiak......I call the first one "ED" after my maker of the bow....the second one is "FRED" after the guy who designed it....thought it appropriate.....john
