I had a trip planned this year and it fell through. I am now looking at buying a leftover tag in KS for unit 10. This means I could hunt unit 9 as well I believe. I have not been able to research muchsince this is now a "last minute" plan. I would be going before upland bird season starts, so Nov. 2nd - 9th. I feel kind of rushed on whether or not to buy the tag. These are leftover tags and last I checked there is 350ish left for unit 10. I have a few months to work out details, but only so much time to decide if I am going to go or not since the tags will be sold. I'm Looking for any advice if the walk-in hunting areas seem to be good in that unit or not, and if you think I should go or not.
Thanks,
Chris
Chris, I don't have any info on WIHA, but I know a good outfitter in Unit 9 that has great low pressure hunts for a pretty reasonable price. PM me if you're interested. Good luck! Sam
Wiha dosnt open on a lot of ground till bird season opens if you get a atlas it should tell you what opens and dosent
Chris,
Sent you a PM.
I don't think a unit ten tag is valid in unit nine, but maybe unit nineteen? That being said there is some public land in unit ten and some WIHA (though Jeff is right about some of it not opening up till November 1st). I have hunted quite a bit in unit nine but not in unit ten, that area of the state is more forested than I'm used to anymore, but you could probably do ok. There are some big deer that have come from that area in the past...
Chris,
There is public land in Jefferson County north around Valley Falls as well as some Corps land around lakes Perry and Clinton.
The Walk in land in that unit hasn't been leased yet but, in the past, it has been pretty un-impressive...this year it may be worse as we are experiencing a drought.
I hunted 9 and 10 and 19 last year I think. Never saw a deer on public ground.
There were darned few on the private land in my area last year too... :(
Saw fewer deer on public and privite land last year. In fact, saw very few. Maybe I forgot where to look! :dunno: Doubt it, just fewer deer. I hunt 9, 10 and 19 mostly.
I have seen a lot of deer on WIHA in the past, and got a couple. It's hit or miss. A lot of WIHA is marginal or worse, but there are a few tracts that are fine. They can be covered up with people though. If you can find the bowhunting only parcels that open up early in the season, that's a better bet.
I normally hunt in unit 11 but have gone to Perry lake a few times and tried to still hunt. I wasn't successful but i did see deer every time i went.
I live in unit 10, there are deer around. Not as many as there were but they are still here. I hunt walk in all the time, there are some good spots around, send me a message if you want to know more.
