Title: Help with an experiment
Post by: on July 10, 2012, 08:15:00 AM
I am hoping  I can get 6 of you TGers to try out something new. First the explanation: I have tried all sorts of arrow rest materials over the years, and many of them work just fine. Having said that, I still think that seal fur makes the best arrow rest-- it is slick, wears forever, looks great and is water resistant. The problem is, as most of us know, you can't get it anymore in the US due to the ban on seal pelt imports.

So, I have been looking for a substitute. Most recently I have found a "faux" seal fur made in Europe which looks as if it might be a good stand in for the real thing. The color is "Camel", a golden tan. I bought a big piece, at a reasonable cost.

The deal is this: if you will try this out and give me some feedback about how it works on your setup, I will send you (free gratis) a square of it (2" by 2") which should allow you to make several rests. Apply with Barge or rubber cement. First 6 people to respond get the sample.

Thanks for your help with the experiment!

Susan

I'm in!
Will PM my address, in a blind not-so-far leap of faith.
It would be terrific if this stuff is hardy enough to use for tabs.

I would also like to try it. I've been using thin leather for the plate and either velcro or a nylon "rug" for the rest. I'd like to go thinner.

Thanks

Susan,  I have family that are Inuit natives up in alaska and they hunt seal.  I wonder if they are able to give away seal fur?  I will ask and get back to you.

We'll test anyway-- this is a lot cheaper than the real thing and if it works we're golden!

Hadn't considered Alaska......most of it comes from Canada I believe and can't come across the border.

Susan, I wasn't thinking when I jumped up and grabbed a slot. I'm going in for surgery tomorrow and probably won't be able to do much shooting for some weeks. You need someone who can really give them a workout and get back to you.

Please take me off the list. I will be glad to buy some later, after you've gotten maximum mileage out of this test.

Sorry for making extra work for you. And thanks for exploring this option.

Alaska Bowhunting Supply stopped carrying them when the ban was put on Seal. Not aware of any others--if you know of a source I'd love to hear about it!
