I'm having a bow made with dual shelves, I'm left eye dominate and want to try to shoot left hand a bit but still want to go right. I have shot right hand since I was 12. Any body out there go back and forth on a regular routine? I'm thinking there may a time or two where it would be handy while hunting. :campfire:
I tried shooting left-handed ONCE. Just does not work for me. I hope it works for you. There have been a couple of times when I wish I could shoot left handed, as I have had some nice deer come in from my right side.
Who is making your bow? I am left eye dominant and shoot both right and left handed. Thanks. Ken
I shoot lefty and righty. Shot right handed with a dominant left eye for better than 20 years. Went to lefty in 2005. It took two weeks to learn to shoot lefty, it's no big deal...if you don't fight it. Feels awkward and it isn't sub concious, but making the switch isn't all that hard.
I don't know if there is any actual benefit while hunting. Out of a stand you always have blind side and being able to shoot with the other hand makes sense. What you have to account for is time and movement and it has been my experience that by the time you know for certain which way the critter is headed it is already to late to make the switch. That said sometimes stand placement is a better criteria for the shooting hand preference.
I've had more benefit at the target range. If you can shoot both ways you stand the opportunity to clean up in a shooting competition, just be creative...8^)
Kulzakd, Chad Holm [Holm-Made Bows] is making the bow for me....64" longbow with a dual shelf, 43# @ 29". I should have it in 3 or 4 weeks and I will give report on how it works for me.....hopefully well...lol!
I do...really enjoy the fact I can switch back and forth.
I've been known to switch a bit.... :knothead:
I shoot both ways........probably 75% left handed. Most of my bows are lefties, but I do have a double shelf Green Mountain longbow that I shoot quite a bit right handed. It's easy to switch with a double shelf bow.
You are talking about shooting aren't ya?
I can shoot both....
Left eye dom, shot righty for years and still do.
Taught myself to shot with both eyes open.
And left handed....
Next bow I get will another Hill bow with no shelf and ambi....
Could come in handy at some 3D shoots, where righty might be a hard shot but not lefty....
Ron, I can think of some pretty bad Jokes!
Your choice of woods and materials will be nice. Cant wait to see this one.
I have enough issues R/H!! :help:
:goldtooth: Yes I'm talking shooting!!
Yup, definitely build em both ways and shoot em too.

I just got a dual shelf. I'm right handed..left eye. Most of my bows are lefty but I am shooting right to keep some balance and seem to be adjusting to it. I got a bow blank from 7 lakes that was dual shelf and finished it myself. Fun project plus finally got my double shelf.
ron w,
Thanks. Send me pics please. Thanks. Ken
I don't think you will have any problem shooting both sides if you switch fairly frequently. I'm left eye dominant and strongly right handed. Picked up an ultra light draw lefty (32# that I'm selling) and found I could aim more easily with both eyes open. Shooting right, I have to squint my left eye closed and invariable move the point about 6-8 inches to the right once the right eye takes over. I picked up a beautiful Fox lefty @ 44# that is really sweet, but I'm going to sell it too. I have a 38# '56 Bear Kodiak dual shelf that I really enjoy shooting. 3 arrows from each side. The only awkward part for me is nocking the arrow. After that it's a piece of cake.
I also make it a practice to draw my heavier right hand bows with the left hand for each arrow I shoot with the right. Definitely starting to make a difference in balancing out my back muscles.
Ken;
if you click on the sponsor RMSG they have listed a R/L Wapiti available at the store
Kirk,
Thanks. I will check it out. Ken
wrong post....sorry
I had a dual shelf bow made this past year. Been shooting both hands since the end of winter. Think I'll be ready for a shot at a deer by hunting season.
I'm RH but Left eye dominant as well. I shot RH for 28 years and have shot LH since 1996. I can shoot RH but I don't any longer.
Shoot both ways. Started shooting Right Hand a few years back to try more bows.
I have been teaching myself to shoot right handed lately. I'm a lefty, but being a lefty in a righty world means you're pretty close to ambi anyway. I've gotten fairly decent out to twelve yards or so. I wouldn't try a shot at a game animal right handed yet, but I expect by the time the season rolls around I'll be competant at short ranges if I get the chance. My next couple selfbows I'm working on will be either dual shelved or shot off the knuckle.
shooting lefty and righty for the past 35 years..when I started at age 6 I didnt know better as I had no one to learn from..didnt know I was left eyed dominant but by the time I was 20years old I can shoot both hands equally well but I choose to shoot lefty as injurys more or less determine that now days..but ocassionaly I will pull out a righty and shoot..just practice and after awhile it would become second nature
I shoot both rh & lh, I am rh eye dominate and am more comfortable rh but I shoot lh almost as well just feels a little awakward. I just had Steve Turay build me a dual shelf Ottawa which I love. Like Bladepeek I will shoot a dozen rh then switch up and shoot a dozen lh.
Outside of the bows I teach with I usually stick with my right handed gear but I do wish I had a hunting bow that was a dual & I had become more proficient with it.
I hunt righty only as I'm most confident that way, but switch back and forth when practicing. A dual shelf bow may be in my future!
I can shoot either way, what I found surprising is that you have to HUNT right or left handed. Meaning than your stands and blinds don't always work for left handed shooting and vice versa. I had to redo some stands and set up "across the trail" or around the other side of trees. Once I got that figured tho, it's nice to be able to do either.

I agree. I'm left handed and while I could probably shoot right handed and hit a barn from the inside, I'm not sure which wall it would be!
I can miss equally with either hand.

:biglaugh: :biglaugh: I hope I can do my best to hit what I want....This will be a learning experiance.
I shoot lefty and righty, BW 52# LH and RH BW 47#.
i shoot both sides, I started because of a finger injury. Went back to right hand heavy bows and quickly heated up a joint on a different finger, so for now again I am back to being mostly left handed. The switching was nothing for me, since I am ambidextrous and do not have a dominant eye. however, with two identical bows I have a half inch longer draw right handed than left handed, so somewhere somehow I am not quite the same size left versus right.
I shoot both and would like to get one bow that I could shoot both off of.
