Well,
I went and ordered my first set of woods today. Using my local shop, and 69$ a doz after cut/ tapered , fletched and points installed. I'm going with POC 60-65 125 up front, one gray barred cock feather to white hens. I cannot wait to get them. I also just sent Jon from Koontenai archery a Pm and I'm going to order some of his shafts to build my own.
Just got off the phone with jonathon from Koontenai archery and ordered 1 doz western larch shafts to build my own. He is a super nice guy to talk with and will explain to you the process and pros/cons of arrows. He also is very passionate about the Westen larch shafts and stands behind his product. A class act. I am looking forward to seeing these shafts.
Congrats!! Once You shoot Wood, You wont go back!! Just something about a Good Wood Arrow... Its good for the Soul and the Spirit!!
You're going to enjoy building them. I've been thinking about that Larch, also Magnus' Poplar. I'm about to order a dozen shafts to make-up for Denton Hill.
Building them & shooting them is fun. Once you build your own, shoot them, & watch that beautiful arc as they sink into your target. You won't go back... :archer2:
Nothing like woodies!
Frank
NOW YOU'VE WENT AND DONE IT! Welcome to the "club".
I have enough hobbies and things I SHOULD be doing, if it's too addicting I'm in trouble.
I need to hurry up and build my wife the new cabinets and book shelves she wants.
On the bright side I never thought of cocobola, bacote or or yew cabinets untill I got into traditional archery. :)
Those are gonna be some expensive cabinets!
I'll stick with poplar, but I can make poplar look like a real fine cherry :) I'll just say cherry.
I just picked up my cedars from the shop, wow are they pretty and fly wonderfully. I also received my Western larch shafts from Kootenai River , and I planned on staining them but the naturally wood is beautiful. Super straight grain and feels to have some heft to them. I cut one to 29" and bareshafted but a little weak so I'm gonna snip some more. I'll post pics later.

YUP! :archer2:
Just got my first doz woodies a few weeks ago and I love them!
COOL!
First set of woodies being tipped with Zwickeys...
don't get a whole lot more trad than that unless you start making shafts and knapping heads.
I won't say that I will never shoot carbons or aluminums again, but for now it is all wood. They just shoot better for me than the others.
