Hey guys...sorry for yet another post outta me. No trad shops around these parts and I have a question. I just switched from woodies to GT Traditional 55/75...long story about tuning and straightness issues...work too much and I want to shoot and not work on my arrows 24/7. Just a ball park guess from everyone. I'm shooting a 66" Classic Longbow that's 58# at 28" and I draw 28". How much weight up front will I need. Or I should say, I cut them at 28.5" and ordered 100 grain brass inserts from 3 Rivers. That'll give me about 245 grains up front...good starting point?? :deadhorse:
I haven't figured out a sure fire way to tell yet, just have to shoot and see. If you've cut them all ready, which is fine, buy a point variety pack and give it a whirl. I'm kind of new at all this so have tried to eliminate as many variables as possible. I cut mine to 30.5" and draw about 28. I've got a #46 pound bow that like the standard aluminum insert and 145gr point, and a #50 bow that likes 350gr. Up front. You never know!
Don't cut them first then try and tune, start at full length and work from there. You'll likely be weak to start, but once you cut it, you can't glue it back on. Go slow and only cut a little off at a time, no more than a 1/4 inch per cut and 1/8 inch when you start getting close to perfect flight. Good luck!
I shoot a longbow that is 56# at 28" and I draw 28". I use GT 5575's with a 100 grain brass insert and 175 gr. points. So I use 275 grains up front and it works out really well for me. I imagine it would work pretty well for u as well.
For future reference, it's a good idea to start with arrows that are at least a couple of inches longer than your draw. That gives you a lot more flexibility in tuning. That being said, I'd think you'll need anywhere from 250 to 300 upfront total. Get yourself a few field points in various weights (125, 145, 175, 200)and go to this site: http://www.acsbows.com/bowtuning.html

Thanks guys! SO besides having my arrow cut before tuning I am heading in the right direction with the brass inserts and heavy point weight.
That arrow could be too stiff for you if your bow is more of a mild RD D shape or straight limb D bow and not cut past center.
I shoot the 5575 at 30-30.5" out of past center cut recurves at aroung 52-55@29. I use 100 gr. inserts and 175-200 points. Out of my hybrid long bows I shoot 3555 with around 200 up front. You are shooting more weight, but less lenght on your shaft is needed.
Yep, you're on the right track. I have 57# Classic LB (Big River) and draw 28+". My GT5575's are cut at 29.375 to give me a bit of a cushion. I shoot either 250 gr. target points OR on some have a 100 gr. brass insert and then can vary my point weight - I have 100, 125, 145, 175 and 250 gr. points to try. These arrows shoot like lasers when I do my part and have a good release. If you are having problems with this set up I would take a real close look at your form, especially your release.
Thanks Pete, sounds good to me. I'll try the brass inserts and mess around with point weight. Have any suggestions for a good heavy broadhead? Just whitetail and black bear hunting with this setup.
Stos, Eclipse, Simmons, Zwickey, Magnus, Tusker, and Grizzly all make good quality heads for reasonable prices. Any of them will do the job. Just make sure you get them shaving sharp and put them in the right place. If you get glue-on heads, you can adjust the total weight by varying the adapter.
