Post by: flyne on June 18, 2012, 06:01:00 AM
Has any one tried the VPA Offset 2 Blade Single Bevel Heads
Thanks in advance Jim

They probably haven't seen too much action yet since they were released only about 3 months ago.

Do you mean offset like the Badger broadhead or just single bevel? I didn't see it on their web page.

You can't see the offset blades with that picture, but the blades go from past center on the tip to past center on the other side on the back side.

I think I will stick to the rotational advantage of the single bevel and leave the offset to others.

Where can we find out some details?
I would like to check out the concept behind this.
Not much info on that Rayzor site,

Hears a link to razors site  http://www.rayzor-vpa.com/VPA-Offset-2-Blade-Single-Bevel-325gr-VPA-OSSB2BL.htm

And I seen a bit of info when i searched on lea---- wall
But I can't. Find any length or width specs for them thow

How sharp out of the box?  Im wondering if the blade angles would make them difficult to sharpen?

Any word on theory or literature?

The overall length is 3.1", blade length is 2-5/16". Blade thickness is .055". The offset is streight so they sharpen easy. Since they are single bevel and offset, they really twist going into something.

You can get 315 grain points from ABS and iv seen 10 grain waight washers not to mention loseing some waight when sharpening
the broad head is the cheep bit when u look at the cost of every thing else u need for the hunt

They are 1-1/8" wide. Left bevel.

The guy's that won't spend $50.00 on a 3 pack of this quality probabably aren't going to spend 5 to $10,000 going to Africa either. Which these are designed for large dangerous game.  :knothead:

You can make custom, heavyweight field points by using a 190 glue-on point, steel adapter and a little lead shot up in the ferrule. If you need heavier, add a 75 gr Woody Weight.Tuffhead also has 225 and 300 gr,glue-on field points.

I've yet to have someone explain the benefit of this offset blade thing to me. Can anyone explain the rational? Is it the same as the rotational motion in a single bevel? Any testing to back it up?

The offset blades compliment the single bevel causing alot more rotation through the whole cutting process. Similar to a drill bit, but with flat surfaces so they are easy to sharpen.

Here's another question - at what point does rotation through tissue become a liability?

I know the rationale behind single bevels and rotation - rotation splits bones as the head goes through them, and single bevels leave S-shaped wounds that possibly bleed more. Does the greater rotation make much difference in terms of penetration during testing? Does it use up some energy as it rotates? With the offset blades, is there more resistance when cutting soft tissue?

I have to say that my initial reaction to this is 'gimmick'. I'm not meaning to insult VPA - the glowing accounts of quality and service on this forum are proof of their integrity. But I can't help but think that this is one of those good ideas on paper that doesn't make much real difference. I'd have to see some comparisons between double bevel, single bevel and single bevel offset before I'd be convinced. Anyone have pictures or testing data?

Seems there have been MANY offset blade designs and they don't seem to last long. Maybe there is a reason for that? BUT, I'm probably not smart enough to figure it out anyway!   :knothead:      :D

In soft tissue and North American sized game, I don't think it will make a hoot of a differance between single or double bevel offset or straight blades. Where it might help out a little more is heavy bone on large dangerous game. Over 2 feet of penetration you might see a 90 degree rotation. So you won't see any loss of energy compared to a standard double or single bevel with straight blades. Having said that, there has been literaly hundreds of large game taken with our standard 2 and 3 blade. Including a complete pass through with our 300gr 3 blade on a water buffalo. It does however give dangerous game hunters another choice/advantage.

You mentioned a complete passthrough with your 300 gr. 3 blade-can you tell us what bow was used for that?  Have you had many folks using the 3 blade with trad equipment and buffalo?

For those following the thread.....I cleaned it up.

I was trying to read it myself and it was annoying and distracting at all the gripping about the price....which was not the original question.

C'mon guys....lets try not to clutter up threads with whining about prices ok?

The pass through was done by Andy Ivy with a compound in Australia when testing against other high end 2 blades. There are also others that got complete penetration with the broadhead sticking out the other side of the buff with 60# compound. Like I said this is in Australia.
The problem in Africa is that in most areas you are required to use a 2 blade broadhead. Which alot are using our 2 blade Penetrator.

Could someone post a better pic of this broadhead please? The pic on the VPA site leaves a lot to be desired, because I can't even tell it apart from the normal Penetrator. I would love to see what it looks like from the front so you can see the offset and the "drill bit" point or whatever.

Thanks

Here are some photos from Boomerang. Flynes link above has the same photos.

Sometimes an image is indeed worth a thousand words.

I would love to hear more about the experiments and physics behind this design and the whole, rotational thing with single bevels in general.
