Say a week long hunt, a $1000, a longbow, it has to be in september, october, or november. And has to be public land. I live in ohio...so the fuel price is involved in this $1000 budget. Would be hunting by myself or possibly one other guy.
Let the suggestions fly!!!!
One consideration could be hogs down south. There is the chance for lots of action, and you can take numerous animals. Wear your snakeboots.
North Georiga wildlife management areas; Cohutta, Warwoman, Swallowcreek and Blueridge are all public. Probably a 14 hour drive for us Ohio guys. It would be fun to get a group from Ohio to carpool down there!
September Elk in the Colorado Rockies
That would buy my plane ticket and either sex elk tag for Colorado. Another $500 and I'd be sitting pretty!
Hogs in either Georgia or Florida. $1000 does not get you far these days.
In this economy, stay in Ohio and save the cash. I drive to Ohio from Alabama to hunt every fall. You have great hunting there, no reason to go anywhere else.

wow that sounds like a good idea!!!!! didnt know it could be done for that little amount of money!!
I did a self guided Elk hunt last year with Cyclic-Rivers from this site. Total trip with elk tags, gas, food and a hotel on the way home was $990 each. We camped at 10,000 feet and had a great time....no elk but charlie saw a couple and a Chocolate bear. I saw mule deer and some really neat country. So...that would be my choice!!
Provided I had a tag ($550), Kentucky elk. Might make it there & back on $450?

X2. I've done a DIY also for elk and spent under a grand.
I've never spent over a $1,000 on any of my elk hunting trips. :bigsmyl:

Take a look at Nebraska as well. Two deer tags, one either sex and one antlerless (muley or whitetail), turkey tag and an antelope tag for less than $500. Look at the n.w. part of the state. Lots of public ground. Gas split 2 ways from Indiana figures less than $300 at 18mpg and $3.90/gal. I should get 20-22mpg, but not sure how much "country drivin' I will do so I figured 18mpg for a cushion. Good luck and let us know what you decide! Mike
Thanks for all the replies so far. I don't need to go anywhere, I love ohio deer hunting, but I like adventure and change of scenery. I did a self guided colorado elk hunt with another guy. We split the gas and I bought an either sex tag and it cost less than $1000. I would love to do it again, but I would also like to consider other options. I am very interested in mid west deer. I will def. be looking into nebraska....thanks mike. I forgot to mention at this point I would need an over the counter tag I'm sure....so that will be key. Is Nebraska OTC tags?
Yes, NE is over the counter. I am not 100% sure, but I am thinking the turkey tag is good for two birds in the fall, either sex. Check out the NE Fish and Wildlife site. The area that I am going to on the PBS hunt in Oct. is a walk in area...I don't think you can even use a game cart?! Antelope populations seem to scattered from what I have researched I turkey hunted NE in the spring of 2009 in the central part of the state. The local tradganger I hunted with (Fergie) said there was a real low muley population in the area. We saw over 100 mule deer in a day and a half! I do know that the further to the n.w. you go, the more mule deer and antelope you see. I am out of town right now, but will be back home tomorrow late. PM me with your phone # and I will give a buzz sometime early next week if you want me to. Mike
elk somewhere. colorado or idaho maybe??
Hogs and javelina in Texas
1 week round trip from ohio to hunt elk in colorado is not even remotely feasible, unless you are flying in to be picked up by an outfitter, and that throws the $1000 limit out the window.
for your 1st western mountain hunt, don't cheat yourself. wait until you have at least 2 weeks, unless you can afford a guided hunt, and fly in.
to your original question, though, there is a happy answer...
HOGS!!!
carry on!

Ok, Stick
What is the animal of choice? If it's whitetail you should just stay in your home state, and hunt the east side. If you must get away, then go to Western Kentuck where the tags are over the counter ,and $200 for out of state. Very good price. I travel from Vermont to go to Ohio hunting every year, at least once.
This year I had a wonderful invitation which I am honored to have been given. a former Bear Rep who hunted with Fred at Grousehaven offered for me to stay with him and hunt private property in Western Kentucky. This is the first year I will miss Ohio, but I can't pass up meeting a new friend, deer or no deer. In hopes to make some new campfire stories. Giving up Denton hill, and Ohio for this. I am going to preach good Karma. Treat everyone with respect. You never know who may be on the other end of conversation, or deal. I had to share this story somewhere;as I am excited. Best of luck with wherever you chose to go.
I wonder how much for an American Bison (Buffalo). You don't see many hunting pics.
Sept elk in washington state. Thats gonna be my trip this year.
Thats funny Sledge :bigsmyl:
Probably been on a dozen elk hunts from weekend to weekend no more then 9days total. Leave one day drive 24hrs rotating drivers get there the next, set up camp and start hunting. Its great during the week when nobody is around.
Leave the following weekend wishing you could stay a little while longer but most guys have family's and jobs and can't always take two weeks to hunt. We even bring meat home on most trips but not always and we know thats part of the shorter trips but at least were out there doing it.

If you do your home work and study the area you will be hunting with maps and photo's it sure improves your odds. We killed animals on the first day and the last and everyday in between. All for way less then a $1,000
Even pass up a few, First day first time on this mountain 5yds.

Good luck! You might check with KennyM in north east Missouri. He has a private land lease just for tradhunters and very well priced. Missouri tags are two deer and two turkeys for $225. Great place and a great guy
Hogs in Texas. Can get a total package hunt with usually 2 hogs per hunter for about $500 per person. Then just drive down there.
Agreed from the start. You can drive splitting gas money and do Elk in CO for less than $1000.
LIke they said, leave Saturday morning early and get there Sunday morning early. Partial set up of camp, SLEEP and then do some afternoon glassing.
One week 6 days of hunting and back home on Sunday. A week in the Sptember Rockies is wirth it kill or no kill.
We did it last year for the first time and it was a GREAT adventure. Saw some, didn't get a shot, and still worth doing every couple of years.
Elk. I live near them, but that would be my first choice if I didn't.
As for leaving, be packed, kiss the family and roll out after work on Friday. Drive in shifts and you have camp set up Sat night.
No need for all kinds of fancy gear. The old tent and sleeping bag in the garage will work fine. Something to cook with, a cooler, a couple chairs and a trip to the grocery store.
DIY antelope in Wyo.
South Texas for hogs, javies & jackrabbits.......OR Wyoming with OTC pronghorn 2 doe/fawn tags in my pocket. Right now, I'd give my right eye to do either.
I'd love to finally draw a moose tag...
but for me its elk. thats why i live here.
I would go to Co for elk it might cost you 200 more but would be worth it! For me this year 291.00 for Air Fair Like 595.00 for tags 65.00 for my share off rental car I don't count food I have to eat anyways So for me it will cost me 1000.00 for my elk hunt. Widow
Elk by yourself for under $1000. Forget it.
The tag alone is almost 600, unless you want to shoot cow only. Leaves you $410. If you get 18 mpg for around 1500 miles each way, you'll look into min. $300 in gas each way. Now you haven't eaten anything yet. And a week is way too short.
I would not even leave my homestate for only a week. It is not worth the cost to hunt the same kind of animals you can hunt at home and have to buy a non-resident tag.
glad i could give you a laugh, ks trapper.
looks to me like missouri and indiana are between kansas and ohio, though.
i assumed the man would likely not know the country, and might be hunting alone.
more power to you if you want to hunt like that, driving 24 hours straight and all.
to each his own.
joe
I did a week hunt in colorado a few years ago for elk. Saw and heard plenty of elk...just no shot. It is def. worth the price of admission and the 27 hour drive!!!!! Thanks for the ideas.....I'm a dreamer so I love having options!
if you do decide on colorado elk, email me if you like.
i saw 1 once.
joe
Not even a second thought,to northern alberta with my son and son-in-law,bowhunting moose and elk twenty-five miles back in the hills, with tents and woodburning stoves.Lots of coin would be left over.It doesn't get any better for me.Can't wait for September.
